 Whether you <keyword id="6355058" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Work">work</keyword> from home or your boss works <keyword id="52833" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Remote">remote</keyword>ly, the workplace today is much different from the centralized offices of the past. For many organizations, remote employees spread across the country are now the norm. Here's how you can effectively work with your boss, even if you aren't in the same place.

 Between video conferencing, email, and instant messaging, physical proximity to the office is no longer a requirement. Companies are hiring based on talent and fit, not if someone can be in their chair 24/7. This change has led to entire teams being spread across time zones, states, and even countries. While it can be tricky to report to a remote <keyword id="6362609" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manager">manager</keyword>, I'm here to tell you it's possible.
 I work for a non-profit in Washington, D.C., but my <keyword id="2541536" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="manager-works">manager works</keyword> from her home in southern California. I've been working with her remotely for over a year, and in that time have expanded the responsibilities of my role and received a salary increase. Here are the tips that have helped me succeed:
<h3> Establish Regular <keyword id="24346" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="communication">Communication</keyword></h3>

	If you don't have a scheduled weekly call or Skype session with your boss, set one up right away. My boss and I talk every Monday morning for about 45 minutes about my priorities for the week. I discuss what I finished from last week, what I have planned for the upcoming week, and also ask her if she has any projects or tasks that she would like me to work on.

	While I personally think phone calls are the best if you can't meet face to face, even a weekly update email could get the job done. The adage "out of sight, out of mind" rings true here: You don't want to forget about each other just because you don't see each other in the office every day. Another communication tip-send an email to your boss at the end of each week listing what you've completed. This is especially helpful if your relationship with your manager is new and you want to show them that you're effective. Be sure to ask your manager their preferred methods of communication-you certainly don't want to annoy them!

	Build Trust to Avoid Micromanagement</h3>

	My relationship with my manager succeeds because she trusts me, having already demonstrated my effectiveness. My boss isn't a micromanager at all. This isn't to say that she doesn't communicate with me during the week,but she doesn't constantly send emails asking for status updates.

	Once a project is assigned she gives me the space to complete it. Building trust can take time, which is why communication is so important. In the beginning you'll probably want to err on the side of more frequent communication and taper off as you see trust being built. Also, just because you manager isn't in-office, or you <a href="http://lifehacker.com/the-beginners-guide-to-working-from-home-733412770" x-inset="1">work from home</a><inset id="733412770"></inset>, with you doesn't mean that you can't come to them with problems or questions. Picking up the phone every five minutes is probably over the top, but go to your manager when you have issues with project prioritization or need help with a task. Showing your manager that you depend on them and view them as more than a person to take directions from will help build mutual trust. And being proactive when you have a problem or are stuck will show your manager that you tackle problems as they come-and aren't too proud to ask for help.

	Be Respectful to Each Other's Roles</h3>

	It's easy to feel like you don't have a boss if your boss isn't in your office every day, but this <a href="http://lifehacker.com/five-things-i-wish-i-had-known-when-i-started-working-f-1497900668" x-inset="1">doesn't give you free reign</a><inset id="1497900668"></inset> to shirk responsibilities. I still ask my manager for permission on days I work from home, or if I plan to go meet a donor for lunch. It's important to share your schedule and have transparency. Respecting your manager's authority, even when they aren't physically there, will help them respect you as an employee and ultimately lead to increased responsibilities and freedom.

Overnight, West Texas Intermediate crude oil hit $48.58 per barrel, its highest since October. Crude prices have marched higher in recent weeks as supply disruptions in Canada, Nigeria, and Venezuela have taken millions of barrels of oil off the market. Currently, WTI is trading up 0.3% at $48.45 per barrel.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/closing-bell-may-17-2016-5">Fed rate hike expectations are being pulled forward</a>. The largest consumer price gains in three years and hawkish Fed speak from Atlanta Fed president Dennis Lockhart and San Francisco Fed president John Williams have caused fed fund futures traders to pull forward their expectations of a Fed rate hike. Going into Tuesday's session, fed fund futures were pricing in December as the first month with a greater than 50% chance for the next rate hike. However, the market now sees a chances of just worse than a coin flip for a September hike, and a 51.2% chance of the next rate hike occurring in November. Interestingly, the yield curve, when measured as the spread between the 2-year and 10-year yield is down to 94.5 basis points, the flattest its been since Q4 2007. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-japanese-economy-is-growing-again-2016-5">Japan is growing again</a>. The Japanese economy returned to growth in the first quarter after government data showed it expanded at a 0.4% clip. The Q1 reading was ahead of the 0.1% gain that economists were anticipating, and marked the strongest growth since the corresponding quarter from a year ago. The second estimate will be released on June 8, and could be subject to some large revisions as it includes more hard data as opposed to estimates. The Japanese yen is weaker by 0.2% at 109.35 per dollar.<a href="http://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/documents/2995521/7313542/2-18052016-AP-EN.pdf/6c428c5f-ef2a-4428-a2a3-cea1815ac00f">The eurozone remained in deflation</a>. Consumer prices in the eurozone slipped 0.2% in April, which was in-line with economists' forecasts. Prices haven't posted a monthly gain since December. Stripping out the volatile food and energy components, core CPI matched expectations with a 0.7% gain. The euro is down 0.2% at 1.1285.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/valeants-thinking-about-shedding-some-assets-2016-5">Valeant might sell some assets</a>. The embattled drugmaker is considering selling some of its skin and cancer drugs to pay down a portion of its $30 billion debt, according to Manuel Baigorri, Ed Hammond and Cynthia Koons at Bloomberg. The company could reportedly raise $1 billion by selling its Obagi and Provenge drugs. Even if those drugs are sold, it appears Valeant still has a long way to go in tackling its debt load. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/burberry-2016-results-cost-cutting-missing-targets-china-2016-5?r=UK&amp;IR=T">Burberry is overhauling its business</a>. The high-end slowdown is causing big changes at Burberry. The iconic British luxury brand says revenue slumped 1% to £2.5 billion ($3.6 billion) and pre-tax profit was down 7% to £415.6 million ($600 million) during the past fiscal year. Additionally, comparable sales slipped 1%. Burberry says it will cut £100 million ($144 million) of annualized costs after "demand slowed in many markets for both cyclical and structural reasons."<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/john-mcafee-mgt-stock-2016-5">John McAfee's mysterious new company is on fire</a>. On Tuesday, John McAfee Global Technologies gained more than 37% to finish at $4.08 per share. Notable was that the move came on volume of more than 108 million shares, making it the most traded stock in America. MGT has been on fire since McAfee was named CEO on May 9, surging more than 1000%.Stock markets around the world are mostly lower. Britain's FTSE (-0.5%) lags in Europe after Hong Kong's Hang Seng (-1.5%) trailed in Asia. S&amp;P 500 futures are down 1.25 points at 2042.25.Earnings reports continue to flow. Lowe's, Staples, Hormel Foods, and Target are among the names reporting ahead of the opening bell. American Eagle Outfitters, Cisco Systems, L Brands, Salesforce.com, and Urban Outfitters highlight the names releasing their quarterly reports after markets close.The latest Fed minutes are due out. At 2 p.m. ET, the Federal Reserve will release the minutes from its April policy meeting. Traders will be parsing the minutes for clues as if/when the Fed's next rate hike will occur. Important things to look for include any discussions about inflation returning to the Fed's 2% target and low unemployment as they are the two components of the Fed's dual mandate. <li>Markets were down across the board. Asia was lower in overnight trading. Japan's Nikkei closed down 1.12%; Korea's KOSPI, 0.51%; and Hong Kong's Hang Seng, 0.51%. Europe was down as well, and U.S. futures were pointing south.</li>
<li>Eurozone industrial production dropped unexpectedly in October, with output at 0.2% year over year. Economists were expecting a 1.1% increase. Month over month, industrial production fell 1.1% (economists were looking for a 0.3% increase). Though the continent is showing some signs of life, the report serves as a reminder that Europe still has a long way to go on the road to recovery.</li>
<li>This morning at 8:30 a.m. ET, weekly initial unemployment claims data will be released. Economists believe that initial claims climbed to 320,000 from 298,000 a week ago. "Initial jobless claims probably surged, after unexpectedly dropping during the week of Thanksgiving," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/monday-scouting-report-dec-9-2013-2013-12">wrote Citi's Peter D'Antonio</a>. "However, we view the 42,000 pop as merely payback and not indicative of a new trend. In fact, the average over the weeks ending November 30 and December 7 would be 319,000 - roughly the level of claims just ahead of the holiday distortion."</li>
<li>Also at 8:30 a.m., we'll see retail sales data for November (which includes half of Thanksgiving weekend but not Cyber Monday). Economists expect the monthly measure of sales of goods and services at retail stores to have increased 0.6%, up from October's 0.4% print. The figure may be a good view into what kind of holiday shopping the U.S. economy can expect this season. And at 10:00 a.m., October data on U.S. business inventories will be released. Economists are expecting the unsold goods held by manufacturers and retailers to have grown 0.3%, down from 0.6% the month prior.</li>
<li>Stanley Fischer is President Obama's top pick to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/stanley-fischer-deputy-fed-chief-2013-12">become Federal Reserve vice chairman</a>, multiple outlets reported yesterday. Fischer, who headed Israel's central bank from 2005 to last June, is seen as a steady hand who guided that economy through the financial crisis. "We think it is great news that the Administration may nominate Stanley Fischer to be vice-chairman of the Federal Reserve Board," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/morgan-stanley-on-stanley-fischer-2013-12">wrote Morgan Stanley's Vincent Reinhart</a>. "Fischer has been around the inner circle of international economic policymaking for three decades. If he was not at a major meeting in person, one of his students from his long tenure at MIT probably was."</li>
<li>Australia's <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/australia-unemployment-rate-rises-to-58-2013-12-11">unemployment rate edged up to 5.8%</a> in November from 5.7% in October. Strickland, who was 18 years old when the three people were gunned down, has maintained that he was at home watching television and talking on the phone with his girlfriend at the time of the murders, according to the report.At the time, Jackson County Prosecutors said they found Strickland's fingerprints on another suspect's car, but Strickland said he had known him since childhood and had previously driven his vehicle.Cynthia Douglas, the sole surviving victim in the case, had identified Strickland in a lineup, according to the report.The same Jackson County Prosecutor's office that tried Strickland now believes he is "factually innocent" of the murders, according to the Kansas City Star report."I'm here advocating for Mr. Strickland's freedom and his conviction should be vacated," Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said last month. "Most importantly, though, I am advocating that this man must be freed immediately."In sworn statements, two other men, Vincent Bell and Kilm Adkins, admitted to the murders and cleared Strickland of involvement, according to ABC <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">News</keyword>. Dillon and lawyer-advocate Cynthia Chandler worked together to pass a bill banning these procedures in California prisons.</li><li>Women inmates were falsely told they had cervical cancer and needed their reproductive organs removed, or doctors performed non-consensual hysterectomies after they gave birth, "Belly of the Beast" shows.</li></ul>Kelly Dillon was 24 when she was sterilized without her <keyword id="6391249" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="consent">consent</keyword>.It was 2008, and she had just arrived in Central California Women's Facility, a prison where she would spend the next 15 years after being charged with shooting and killing her husband in self-defense.A survivor of domestic violence, Dillon left her two young sons behind at her home in Los Angeles. It is not clear how many endured the same fate in the 11 years between 2003 and 2014, when Dillon and her attorney Cynthia Chandler <a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/gov-jerry-brown-signs-bill-to-end-forced-prison-sterilization/2075388/#:~:text=Legislation%20signed%20by%20Gov.,Jackson%2C%20a%20Santa%20Barbara%20Democrat">worked to pass SB1135</a>, a bill that bans forced sterilizations in prisons for birth control purposes.Court documents revealed that the prisons coded cases like Dillon's, as well as those of tubal ligation's after C-section births, as "medically necessary," and, as such, the state would pay for them. Another document showed Dr. James Heinrich, the OB/GYN who performed these sterilizations (including Dillon's), called them "cheaper than welfare." As a Jewish woman, the phrase 'Never again' was always kind of profoundly in the back of my mind," Cohn told Insider, referring to the post-Holocaust adage. "When I learned about this different kind of genocide that was happening through imprisonment, that was happening through forced sterilizations behind bars, I knew that I wanted to get involved."<div type="image" title="BELLY OF THE BEAST" height="1080" width="1920" msid="79399029" hostid="261"></div><h2>The US has a long history of forced sterilization</h2>This isn't the first instance of mass forced sterilizations in the US.Since 1927, the Supreme Court has chosen to uphold the case <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/03/07/469478098/the-supreme-court-ruling-that-led-to-70-000-forced-sterilizations">Buck v. Bell</a>, which allowed Virginia officials to forcibly sterilize Carrie Buck, a young woman they called "feeble-minded" and decided was unfit to start a family.Supporters of the <a href="https://daily.jstor.org/when-forced-sterilization-was-legal-in-the-u-s/">eugenics movement</a> — which upheld selective mating as a way to "improve" society and led to the sterilization of people with disabilities, Native Americans, Black people, and Latinx people — considered the SCOTUS ruling a victory, <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/03/07/469478098/the-supreme-court-ruling-that-led-to-70-000-forced-sterilizations">NPR previously reported</a>. The Nazis <a href="https://theintercept.com/2020/09/17/forced-sterilization-ice-us-history/">modeled their plan</a> for genocide on California's sterilization of tens of thousands of people, as <a href="https://www.uvm.edu/~lkaelber/eugenics/#:~:text=American%20eugenics%20refers%20inter%20alia,60%2C000%20sterilizations%20of%20disabled%20individuals.">29 other states</a> followed suit.Between 1920 and 1950, California's government oversaw the <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/california-targeted-latinas-forced-sterilization-180968567/">sterilizations of 20,000 people</a>, citing a lack of mental stability or physical disability as the reason for the irreversible procedure. A <a href="https://www.cwluherstory.org/health/35-of-puerto-rican-women-sterilized?rq=Puerto%20rico">1965 survey</a> found one-third of Puerto Rican women were sterilized under the guidance of the US and Puerto Rican governments.The <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/03/07/469478098/the-supreme-court-ruling-that-led-to-70-000-forced-sterilizations">government's right to sterilize people</a> they see unfit for procreation is still in some states' constitutions.In September, <a href="https://www.insider.com/ap-exclusive-more-migrant-women-say-they-didnt-ok-surgery-2020-9">forced sterilizations were uncovered at a Georgia immigration detention center.</a> Officials there denied the allegations, and the doctor who performed the procedures was not disciplined or fined, the Associated Press found in their <a href="https://www.insider.com/ap-exclusive-more-migrant-women-say-they-didnt-ok-surgery-2020-9">investigation</a>.<h2>In California, women were falsely told they had cancer and needed sterilizations to survive</h2>Cohn said that, through documentation and interviews, she learned many women in the California prisons were not told they were being sterilized until they came out of surgery.In some cases, women reported prison medical staff telling them they had cervical cancer and needed their reproductive organs removed to survive.In others, doctors performed hysterectomies, a surgery to remove the uterus, immediately after a woman inmate gave birth, women told Cohn. "There's layers upon layers upon layers of how these procedures happen. And the one thing that remains consistent is that these are coercive illegal sterilizations," Cohn said.<h2>'We're seen as burdens on the system'</h2>Despite SB1135 banning forced sterilizations, Cohn said heightened security has made it difficult for advocates to know whether California prisons have gone away with the practice. Medical personnel who were involved in the sterilizations weren't reprimanded, according to the film.The film posits that some believe prison inmates don't deserve to be in charge of their own fertility. It's a myth, Cohn says, that's <a href="https://publichealthreviews.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40985-017-0060-9">perpetuated by the legacy of racism in the United States</a>."That is one of the things that has happened to the African American Black woman: We're seen as welfare recipients. And we're seen as burdens on the system," Dillon, now 44, told <a href="https://19thnews.org/2020/10/belly-of-the-beast-forced-sterilizations-california-prisons/">The 19th.</a>"If you can perpetuate that lie, and perpetuate those issues, then it's easier to get not only the buy in for the agenda and the policy to sterilize us, but you can also get the person who thinks they have a moral high standard of preserving life … you can get them to buy into that b------t too."Cohn said people who want to repair the country's legacy of forced sterilizations should demand states ban it, and offer monetary reparations to those who have undergone the procedure while in prison. However, there are multiple venue options, from Madison Square Garden because of Lopez's built-in following with New York's fight-friendly Latino communities, to Las Vegas, and even Saudi Arabia.The longer the Lomachenko duel gets delayed, the more likely it is Lopez will demand a stipend to stay inactive."Hopefully we can make big fights like me against Lomachenko happen," he told us. "They have to pay me in advance, Top Rank have always kept me active every few months or so. This, if it happens in late May or June, that's almost six months or a little bit more inactive, not in the ring."He added: "I wish they could do [it] as soon as possible. The streamer, whose real name is Seán McLoughlin, hosted the annual <keyword id="6351" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="charity">charity</keyword> event over the holiday season for the past several years, but 2020 has hit a little differently."Normally we set up a set and we have a production crew and we make it look all Christmassy and make it look really fancy and have people rotate in and out," he told Insider. "Obviously we can't do that this year, so we're just going to do that from home, and we're trying to mobilize as many streamers and creators and YouTubers and audience members together to do it."As one of YouTube's most prolific philanthropists, McLoughlin's massive and loyal fanbase has helped him raise millions of dollars for charities over the years. But 2020, he said, has been "absolutely nuts" and really raised the bar both for the amount of people getting involved, and the money they donate. He hopes to raise half a million dollars this year. The campaign highlights just how massive streaming has become since the pandemic hit. "So I'm just going to stream all day and see what I can do - read out people's donations, get involved, give people some awareness, and kind of give people a piece of positivity to round out the year on."The event will raise money for Red Nose Day, and focus on providing food and funds to the families who have been hit by the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Red Nose Day has also committed to matching up to $1.5 million raised."I just feel like it's a facet of this pandemic that's not really covered as much, and as soon as we heard about it, we were like we have to do something to help people out," McLoughlin said. "It should be something that everybody has, so we just want to help where we can, and get people the basic necessities to go about their lives."He said he might have some "surprises" in store for when donations reach certain goals. It's attracted massive <keyword id="1112328" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Influencers">influencers</keyword> who play in teams, including PewDiePie, Pokimane, and Corpse Husband. In October, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez <a href="https://www.insider.com/aoc-among-us-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-twitch-stream-james-charles-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">put out a call on Twitter</a> for streamers to play it with her in a livestream in an attempt to encourage the public to vote in the 2020 election. It offers an authenticity that viewers crave to see in celebrities on their screens, which even YouTubers don't always achieve in their highly-edited vlogs and videos."There's a lot of really smart influencers out there who know how to do streaming well," she said.
