Amethi Superintendent of Police Dinesh Singh told mediapersons that a police team led by Jagdishpur police station SHO Rajesh Kumar Singh and sub-inspector Mahendra Saroj checked a vehicle and recovered 502 tortoises from it on Wednesday after receiving a tip-off. <br /><br /> The accused identified as <keyword id="4699" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh">Ramesh</keyword>, a resident of Gandhinagar Palpur village under Jagdishpur police station limits, was arrested while his accomplice Vishal from the same village escaped from the police net, he said. <br /><br /> The two accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the SP further said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Big Tech stock rally has run its course, but the broader equity market will still approach record highs this year, according to the chairman of Sanders Morris Harris. </li><li>"We instead believe smaller technology stocks will likely lead the market," George Ball told Fortune. </li></ul><p>The rally in Big Tech stocks has "run its course," but the broader US equity market will still extend gains toward record highs this year, according to the chairman of Sanders Morris Harris, a US investment firm that manages $4.9 billion for clients.</p><p>"We expect the broader markets to move back near record highs at some point in 2023, but it won't likely be because of Big Tech," <a href="https://fortune.com/2023/04/25/big-tech-stocks-outlook-rebound-over-markets-still-to-hit-record-high/">George Ball told Fortune on Tuesday.</a> "We instead believe smaller technology stocks will likely lead the market." </p><p>The veteran investor thinks the largest blue-chip tech companies have gotten so big that they can't grow much more, and that it would be "almost impossible" for their revenues to swell at the pace they have done for the past 10 years. </p><p>So smaller tech stocks - which have fallen 50%-80% since the market's record highs reached in November 2021 - will power the market higher, given that there's more room for their revenue to grow, according to Ball. </p><p>"Hence upside potential after the partial recovery is medium grade at best. Smaller but established tech companies are where the almost unbounded growth opportunities exist," he told the publication. </p><p>Tech stocks have rallied this year, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite up nearly 14% year to date, recovering after a tough 2022. That's despite the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest-rate hikes over the past year that tend to hurt earnings and stocks.</p><p>"There is an increasing sense that corporate America can cope with higher interest rates more successfully than expected, and that is attracting more buyers of stocks," Ball told Fortune. </p><p>But in order to rise toward record highs, further major increases in the key stock indexes would be required, Ball suggested. The Dow Jones is roughly 9% away from its January 2022 record high while the S&amp;P 500 is around 16% below its all-time peak. </p><p>He maintained that while 2023 won't be a record for the market's performance in his opinion, investors shouldn't be discouraged. </p><p>"Stay invested, but be sure to avoid speculative excess. This will be a year of three yards and a cloud of dust, not 60-yard touchdown passes," he said, referencing an American football idiom. "The tortoise will beat the hare, once again."</p>

The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I first lived abroad when I was 15, when I participated in an exchange program in Germany. I lived there for a year, attending school and staying with a host family.</p><p>That was my first exposure to living overseas and truly immersing myself in other cultures. From there, the travel bug hit me hard. It inspired me to study international business in France while I was at university, and future trips after that.</p><p>I've been to 54 countries and lived in 10, including the US. The sense of freedom and self-growth that comes from traveling is unbeatable. I also love being able to see the world in a different way.</p><div type="image" title="Kate Boardman in Tblisi, Georgia." height="2441" width="3254" msid="109459360" hostid="261" sizebytes="1058706"></div><p>The most popular destinations are popular for a reason.</p><p>Everyone talks about Paris, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-moved-to-london-stressful-lonely-now-moving-to-portugal-2024-3">London</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bali-indonesia-travel-tips-before-visiting-2023-11">Bali</a> — all travel destinations that are super popular, in part thanks to social media.</p><p>I lived in Bali in early 2012 and saw it expand firsthand. There was a lot of construction — with many beach clubs being built — and it became overcrowded by foreigners. It's led to locals being priced out of their homes.</p><p>I also think spots like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/things-to-do-in-cancun-mexico">Cancun</a> are super overrated; there are way cooler places to visit in Mexico. Many tourists spend a week in an all-inclusive resort and think that's fun — but that couldn't be more unattractive to me.</p><p>Obviously, there's still beauty in places that are oversaturated and famous. But I think that there's an excitement that comes from experiencing places that are off the beaten track.</p><p>It's often in those places that you can have the most surprising experiences.</p><h2>I was treated like family in Iran</h2><p>I would say my favorite country that I have visited is Iran. I went in 2018 and was there for 10 days.</p><p>Normally, when I'm traveling, I backpack alone and stay in hostels as a solo traveler. However, in Iran, if you're American, Canadian, or from the UK, in order to get permission to enter the country, you need a set itinerary and a licensed travel guide.</p><p>It was a very coordinated trip and a bit more challenging to visit, but it was so rewarding because I was welcomed with the warmest hospitality.</p><p>One of the unique aspects of this trip was how close my guide and I became. He went above and beyond, inviting me over to his family's house for dinner, where I got to meet and hang out with his friends and family. He arranged different accommodations, including a road trip through the country, where we stayed in various cities at different guesthouses. </p><p>It only cost me around $1,000.</p><p>The nature and landscape of Iran are absolutely beautiful and amazing. The sights, attractions, and history are mind-blowing. You've got these gorgeous mosaics everywhere. All of the architecture had my jaw dropping in awe while walking around.</p><p>The food is also delicious, and the markets are incredible, each filled with gorgeous textiles, jewelry, turquoise, and rugs.</p><p>I would totally visit there again. I hope the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-countered-iran-attack-israel-fighter-jets-destroyers-patriot-missiles-2024-4">political situation</a> changes because that would definitely be one of my group trip destinations. I think it's just incredible.</p><h2>Georgia took me by surprise</h2><p>Georgia is just one of those countries that's not on a lot of people's radar. And then they go there and they're like, 'Whoa, that's awesome. Why didn't I know about this before?'</p><p>I knew very little about Georgia before I visited in 2018. I spent only five days in the country, but I was completely blown away.</p><p>I stayed in Tbilisi, which is the capital city. It's a really beautiful, trendy, and artsy kind of city. It has amazing wine and incredible food.</p><p>Probably one of my favorite things about the trip is that I stayed in this hostel called <a target="_blank" href="https://hostelfabrika.com/">Fabrika</a>. It was an old Soviet Union sewing factory that they turned into a super cool, industrial, hipster hostel.</p><p>In Tbilisi, I also went on a pub crawl throughout the Old Town, which featured a bunch of underground cellars and bunkers that have been turned into trendy nightclubs and bars.</p><div type="image" title="Kate Boardman on top of a mountain in Kazbegi, Georgia." height="1575" width="2362" msid="109459363" hostid="261" sizebytes="528600"></div><p>During my time in the country, I took a trip out to the countryside to an area called Kazbegi, which is absolutely stunning. There were gorgeous and breathtaking mountains, hills, and massive churches.</p><p>In the city, I also had a Turkish bath, which is a big thing in Georgia. I got a full scrub down.</p><h2>Guatemala has something for everyone</h2><p>When most people from the US think about going to Central America, they're focused on Mexico or Costa Rica. Guatemala seems to be a place that kind of gets overlooked.</p><p>But life is great in Guatemala.</p><p>You've got beautiful weather all year round, the jungle, rainforests, and the Caribbean's white sand beaches, while the Pacific side has its black sand beaches. They provided housing in Guatemala City. However, after I finished working for them, I moved to a beach town on the Pacific coast and lived there for about six months.</p><p>I've traveled there on other occasions too, staying for periods of four or five months.</p><p>The typical salary for a Guatemalan is about $500 a month, with a good salary being $1,000. I would say that $2,000 a month is more than enough to live there extremely comfortably.</p><p>There are a lot of digital nomads moving there, especially to Antigua — an old colonial town with a lot of charm, cobblestone streets, and painted buildings.</p><div type="image" title="Kate Boardman on a hammock in Livingston, Guatemala." height="2186" width="1749" msid="109459366" hostid="261" sizebytes="800414"></div><p>There's just so much to do in Guatemala; it's so magical.</p><p>The biggest must do is hiking the active volcano called <a target="_blank" href="https://trekguatemala.com/portfolio-item/acatenango-volcano-overnight-hike/">Acatenango</a>. Sometimes, you can see it erupting right from its base camp. There's not many places in the world where you can experience that.</p><p>Another good place to visit is El Paredon, a super up-and-coming hippie surf town. The surfing is great, and you've got these black volcanic sand beaches. It's just a really laid-back place.</p><p>Lake Atitlan is also an incredible spot. It's surrounded by volcanoes and several Mayan villages, each with its own personality and vibe.</p><h2>Oman's deserts are magical</h2><p>Oman is in the Middle East, bordering the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. I've been there three times between 2016 and 2018.</p><p>The country is culturally rich, and the capital city, Muscat, is really beautiful. It has old traditional marketplaces and gorgeous architecture — the <a target="_blank" href="https://sultanqaboosgrandmosque.com/">Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque</a> is definitely worth checking out.</p><div type="image" title="Kate Boardman sitting on a sand dune in Oman." height="863" width="1183" msid="109459369" hostid="261" sizebytes="43384"></div><p>The deserts there are incredible, so doing a desert trip is a must. I camped out in the desert with the locals, rode camels, and drove Jeeps over the sand dunes. </p><p>Having tea and watching the sunset in the desert was magical too.</p><p>Oman also has wadis, which are basically big canyons in the middle of the desert with swimming holes. There, you'll find bright turquoise water contrasting with the orange rock.</p><p>The country's islands are also beautiful and incredible for snorkeling. They look like you'd be in the Caribbean, but you're in the Middle East.</p><h2>The Galapagos Islands are truly like nowhere else in the world</h2><p>I visited Ecuador last year for about six weeks. I was leading a gap year program with a group of high school students. We split our time between the Galapagos Islands and the mainland, which consisted of cities and the Amazon.</p><p>Because Ecuador has incredibly unique biodiversity that doesn't exist anywhere else in the world, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-to-do-on-the-galpagos-islands-according-to-frequent-visitor">The Galapagos Islands</a> are an absolute must. I've never seen such incredible wildlife in my life; so many species exist only on those islands.</p><p>While visiting The Galapagos, my group went snorkeling with 50 to 100 hammerhead and Blacktip sharks. We also swam with sea lions and saw giant tortoises.</p><div type="image" title="A giant tortoise at The Galapagos Islands." height="2268" width="3024" msid="109459370" hostid="261" sizebytes="1204118"></div><p>Another amazing aspect of Ecuador is learning about the Aztec or Inca culture. My group did a homestay and lived with a family for about 10 days and learned about their way of life.</p><p>We experienced how connected they are with Mother Earth, whom they refer to as Pachamama, and learned about their traditional medicine: They grow their own food and seek out plant medicine when they're sick, rather than relying on processed foods.</p><p>Learning about and sharing their way of life was truly special.</p><h2>I want to show people how to travel the world</h2><p>There are many beliefs people have about different countries and cultures, sometimes considering them too dangerous, expensive, or unattainable.</p><p>I want to inspire more people to explore, step out of their comfort zones, and experience more of the world. In the future, I plan on hosting group trips with the goal of bringing people to these countries and showing them why they are so life-changing.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>When Napoleon invaded Egypt, he brought dozens of scientists with him.</li><li>Astronomers, mathematicians, and naturalists spent three years studying the country.</li></ul><p>When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/napoleon-invasion-russia-moscow-1812-2023-11">General Napoleon Bonaparte</a> invaded Egypt in July 1798, he didn't just bring tens of thousands of soldiers, he also recruited over 150 scientists, known as savants, to accompany him.</p><p>They arrived "with the aim of both study and exploitation," according to an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/edit/10.4324/9781003262312-4/napoleon-savants-description-de-%C3%A9gypte-andrew-shortland"><u>archaeologist</u></a>.</p><p>A little over a month later, on August 23, 1798, the scientific society called the Institut d'Égypte, which still exists today, held its first meeting in a lavish palace in Cairo and appointed Napoleon as its first <a target="_blank" href="https://archive.archaeology.org/9905/abstracts/egypt.html"><u>vice president</u></a>.</p><p>Napoleon wanted to use the country's natural resources, history, and culture for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-studied-napoleon-tesla-spacex-factory-battlefield-biographer-2023-8">benefit of France</a>. He urged the savants to focus on projects, like improving bread ovens, purifying the Nile's water, and brewing beer without hops.</p><p>The scientists' tasks were made more difficult because the ship carrying much of their surveying and scientific equipment had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/986871"><u>sunk</u></a>. Then, after a series of defeats in Egypt, Napoleon returned to France in 1799 and left many of the scientists stranded.</p><p>Despite setbacks, the engineers, mathematicians, naturalists, and others spent nearly three years surveying, documenting, and collecting everything from antiquities to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/curse-tutankhamun-king-tut-pharoah-mummy-tomb-cause-fungi-2023-8">mummified remains</a> to animals largely unknown to the West.</p><p>Their work led to some novel discoveries, helped formalize sciences like archaeology<em>,</em> and spurred an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3000-year-old-ancient-city-discovered-egypt-lost-golden-city-2021-4">infatuation with Egypt</a> that's continued ever since.</p><h2>1. The discovery that chemical reactions are reversible</h2><p>Before chemist Claude-Louis Berthollet's realization, the concept that chemical reactions could be reversible wasn't universally accepted.</p><p>However, Berthollet found strong evidence to support the concept while studying the salt deposits in the lakes of the Natron Valley.</p><p>Limestone in the lakes was covered in a naturally occurring salt called natron, which Egyptians used to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/egypt-mummies-did-not-pull-brain-through-nose-2022-12">preserve mummified bodies</a> because it absorbed moisture and dissolved fat.</p><div type="image" title="Crumbling Graeco-Roman remains at Wadi Natron, with only a single wall standing made of tan bricks" height="1682" width="1750" msid="105679568" hostid="261" sizebytes="473714"></div><p>Berthollet observed that the limestone, which contained <a target="_blank" href="https://napoleon.lindahall.org/soda_lakes.shtml"><u>calcium carbonate</u></a>, chemically reacted with salt, aka sodium chloride, to produce natron, made of sodium carbonate.</p><p>In <a target="_blank" href="https://napoleon.lindahall.org/soda_lakes.shtml"><u>laboratory conditions</u></a>, chemists knew that the exact opposite reaction was possible, which led Berthollet to reasonably conclude that chemical reactions were reversible and that heat and different amounts of a substance could determine which way the reaction went.</p><h2>2. A more formal approach to archaeology</h2><p>In Napoleon's time, archaeology wasn't yet a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thoughtco.com/the-first-archaeologists-167134"><u>formal science</u></a>. Most savants had little experience with artifacts. Sand still buried some temples that had yet to be excavated.</p><p>Dominique-Vivant Denon, an artist and writer, was awed by the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-ancient-historical-sites-before-and-after-excavation-2023-8">ancient monuments</a> he saw. He went back to France with Napoleon and quickly published a book with his descriptions and drawings, "Travels in Upper and Lower Egypt."</p><p>At the time of Napoleon's invasion, travelers had long known of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/archaeologists-mummy-golden-tongue-alexandria-egypt-2021-2">Alexandria</a>, Cairo, and other parts of Lower Egypt. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/egypt-unveils-restaurant-and-electric-bus-fleet-at-the-great-pyramids-to-lure-tourists-2020-10">Great Pyramids</a> and Sphinx were famous. But Upper Egypt wasn't as well known.</p><p>That changed when the savants arrived. "The whole army, suddenly and with one accord, stood in amazement...and clapped their hands with delight," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-scientific-importance-of-napole/">Denon later wrote</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Drawing of the Edfu Temple in Egypt by Vivant Denon showing cracks in the structure and larger towers in the background" height="1601" width="3239" msid="105679569" hostid="261" sizebytes="550012"></div><p>His drawings and descriptions of the temples and ruins at Thebes, Esna, Edfu, and Karnak proved immensely popular. Many were depicted in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-9054-0"><u>fashionable paintings</u></a> and inspired decor trends.</p><p>Since he'd had to capture everything in <a target="_blank" href="https://archive.archaeology.org/9905/abstracts/egypt.html"><u>short bursts of time</u></a>, Denon had pushed for two commissions of savants to return and better document <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/egypt-best-tourist-sites-luxor-ancient-city-of-thebes-photos-2019-4">the monuments</a>.</p><p>Napoleon's <a target="_blank" href="https://archive.archaeology.org/9905/abstracts/egypt.html"><u>architects and engineers</u></a> made careful drawings and took measurements of a large number of monuments. Others attempted to measure the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pyramid-hidden-rooms-lidar-egypt-sahure-2023-10">pyramids</a>. (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/historians-absolutely-hate-ridley-scott-napoleon-movie-2023-11">Napoleon never shot</a> them with cannons, in case you were wondering.)</p><h2>3. Savigny discovered a new way to classify insects</h2><p>When he was back in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-moved-to-paris-healthcare-rent-affordability-2023-9">France</a>, Jules-César Savigny needed to organize the 1,500 species of insects he'd brought back. There didn't yet exist a systematic way to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/bees-officially-type-of-fish-california-judges-ruling-endangered-species-2022-6">distinguish one species</a> of moth or butterfly from another. So Savigny invented one.</p><p>It turned out, the mouth parts had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/986871"><u>sufficient</u></a> differences to allow Savigny to separate the bugs into species. He pored over the tiny jaws of the insects. He drew over 1,000 images of specimens, some of which were only a centimeter long.</p><p>Just 21 and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/growing-food-on-mars-like-the-martian-2015-9">botanist</a> by training when he arrived in Egypt, Savigny collected invertebrates like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/forty-six-thousand-year-old-worm-found-siberian-permafrost-brought-back-to-life-2023-7">worms</a>, bees, spiders, snails, and flies. Some of his classification methods are <a target="_blank" href="https://scholarworks.gvsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1171&amp;context=gvjh"><u>still in use</u></a> today.</p><h2>4. The discovery of a new species of crocodile that took 200 years to confirm</h2><p>Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire was convinced there were two species of crocodiles in the Nile.</p><p>Like Savigny, Geoffroy was a prolific collector. While in Egypt, he studied bats, mongooses, tortoises, and more.</p><p>One reason Geoffroy was able to dissect and stuff so many specimens was he had purchased an 11-year-old enslaved boy, whom he trained to help with his work.</p><p>Geoffroy dissected so many different kinds of animals that he started to see patterns between even very different species. It led to his theory of a "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0160932707000804"><u>unity of plan</u></a>" or "unity of composition" a kind of quasi-evolutionary idea that Charles Darwin would reference decades later.</p><p>Geoffroy's <a target="_blank" href="https://arcade.stanford.edu/rofl/ibis-and-crocodile-napoleon%E2%80%99s-egyptian-campaign-and-evolutionary-theory-france-1801%E2%80%931835"><u>theories</u></a> often irritated his fellow naturalists. That includes when he attempted to demonstrate a mummified crocodile he'd taken from Egypt represented a separate species.</p><div type="image" title="A drawing of two crocodiles, one full size and smaller one in front" height="1000" width="3501" msid="105679573" hostid="261" sizebytes="1424952"></div><p>Its jaw was completely different from the Nile crocodile, Geoffroy said. Plus, it was less aggressive. One had been on display in Paris. "It took pleasure in being patted; and anyone might, without the least danger, open its mouth, and place his hand between its teeth," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/New_Monthly_Magazine_and_Humorist/R8g2AQAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=Geoffroy+Saint-Hilaire+crocodile+suchus&amp;pg=PA158&amp;printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&amp;q=Geoffroy%20Saint-Hilaire%20crocodile%20suchus&amp;f=false"><u>according</u></a> to one account.</p><p>His colleagues said he was wrong about there being a separate species of crocodile. However, over 200 years later, biologist Evon Hekkala and a team of researchers <a target="_blank" href="https://news.fordham.edu/science/new-croc-discovered-by-fordham-biologist/"><u>analyzed the DNA of modern crocodiles</u></a> and some of Geoffroy's mummies to confirm his suspicions, and show two separate species swam in the Nile: Crocodylus niloticus and Crocodylus suchus.</p><h2>5. The advent of ophthalmology</h2><div type="image" title="An engraving of the house of Osman Bey with elaborate columns, several levels, a brick wall, and people and a camel and horses in the courtyard" height="1500" width="2114" msid="105679574" hostid="261" sizebytes="595250"></div><p>The French physicians who accompanied Napoleon encountered unfamiliar diseases in Egpyt. One disease they brought back with them to Europe was something they called <a target="_blank" href="https://www.utpjournals.press/doi/pdf/10.3138/cbmh.27.2.321"><u>Egyptian ophthalmia</u></a>, which is now known as trachoma and can cause itchy, swollen eyes and lead to blindness.</p><p>It became so prevalent that physicians all over Europe started studying the disease. Geoffroy, who contracted it, was "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0160932707000804"><u>totally blind" for weeks,</u></a> he wrote.</p><p>Up to that point, ophthalmology wasn't a formalized branch of scientific research, but the race to find the origin of this disease laid the groundwork for its creation.</p><p>Eventually, British physician <a target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6359513/"><u>John Vetch</u></a> realized the pus from the infected eye could spread the disease. Knowing it was contagious, Vetch developed methods of prevention and treatment that are considered milestones in the history of ophthalmology.</p><h2>6. The Rosetta Stone helped Champollion discover how to decipher hieroglyphs</h2><p>For centuries, no one could read hieroglyphs, the pictorial writing that covered many Egyptian monuments. </p><p>When the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disputed-ancient-artifacts-2011-7">French found the Rosetta Stone</a> during their invasion, they knew it could serve as a kind of translation key.</p><p>Deciphering hieroglyphs would allow scholars to read the writing on scores of other Ancient Egyptian texts and monuments.</p><p>In 1801, the British were negotiating for France's surrender. One stipulation was that the British would take the <a target="_blank" href="https://archive.archaeology.org/9905/abstracts/egypt.html"><u>antiquities and the savants' collections</u></a>, which included the Rosetta Stone.</p><p>Geoffroy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Mirage/n--z6iyUooUC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=mirage+napoleon%27s+scientists+and+the+unveiling+of+egypt&amp;printsec=frontcover">told the British</a> that the savants would "destroy our property, we will disperse it in the Libyan sands, or we will throw it into the sea" before they handed it over. They were allowed to keep their notes and collections.</p><div type="image" title="A man and woman in 1930s clothing stand in front of and behind the Rosetta Stone" height="1500" width="1914" msid="105679576" hostid="261" sizebytes="322900"></div><p>Three texts were inscribed on the stone, in Egyptian hieroglyphs, an Egyptian cursive script derived from hieroglyphs, and Ancient Greek. Since the three were identical, the Greek writing could help researchers decipher the hieroglyphs.</p><p>It took two decades for French scholar Jean-François Champollion to translate them. Champollion made use of a <a target="_blank" href="https://napoleon.lindahall.org/rosetta_stone.shtml"><u>copy</u></a> the French savants had taken of the slab and published.</p><p>The Rosetta Stone is currently in the British Museum. Egypt has been trying to get it back, calling it a "spoil of war."</p><h2>7. The<em> </em>invention of an engraving machine that sped up the printing process</h2><p>When the savants returned to France, many worked on compiling the multi-volume book "Description de l'Égypte," which amounted to 7,000 pages encompassing what they'd seen and studied in Egypt.</p><p>To save some of the laborious work of engraving, engineer Nicolas-Jacques Conté created a <a target="_blank" href="https://napoleon.lindahall.org/engraving.shtml"><u>machine</u></a> that automated part of the process.</p><p>To print the hundreds of illustrations, engravers first had to transfer them to <a target="_blank" href="https://archive.archaeology.org/9905/abstracts/egypt.html"><u>copper plates</u></a>.</p><div type="image" title="A drawing of a domed mosque and tall tower in Cairo circa 1798" height="1500" width="2115" msid="105679580" hostid="261" sizebytes="507550"></div><p>For plates with monuments, Conté's machine could <a target="_blank" href="https://archive.archaeology.org/9905/abstracts/egypt.html"><u>engrave the sky</u></a> in the background. The engraver could program it to create clouds as well.</p><p>What originally would've taken six to eight months could be completed in just a few days.</p><p>It was still a massive undertaking and considered to be the most ambitious work of France in the early 19th Century. The first volume wasn't printed until <a target="_blank" href="https://academic.oup.com/oaj/article/39/2/243/2223028"><u>1809</u></a>. The final volume came out in the late 1820s, nearly a decade after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/napoleon/napoleon-and-josephine/who-was-napoleon.html"><u>Napoloen's death</u></a>.</p>

It's no wonder, then, that many of the financially elite are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/as-they-become-wealthier-more-americans-are-chartering-luxury-yachts-2022-9">undeterred in their spending</a> on high-flying opportunities even as a recession threatens the economy. </p><p>These well-off wanderlusters have helped create a travel-industry boom, with pent-up demand pushing bucket-list travel into this year's shoulder seasons. The most spendy of globetrotters are going all out — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flight-delays-cancellations-lost-bags-luxury-travel-agent-chaos-2022-7">perhaps even more than usual</a> — to ensure an unforgettable holiday.</p><p>Take one East Coast big spender who flew 20 of his closest friends to Rock House, a $655-plus-per-night hotel in the Caribbean island chain Turks and Caicos, for an all-expenses-paid long weekend over the summer. Throughout the four days, top-shelf liquor and $600 bottles of wine flowed freely. He paid $120,000 to the resort alone, said Nikheel Advani, the COO of Rock House's owner, Grace Bay Resorts. </p><div type="image" title="A view of Turks and Caicos resort Rock House from the ocean." height="1665" width="2220" msid="95086432" hostid="261" sizebytes="374606"></div><p>Then there's the man who, as an anniversary surprise for his wife, planned to book a private palazzo in Venice for a performance by opera legend Andrea Bocelli at the cost of about $300,000 for a half hour, and then jet to the Dolomite mountains for a romantic picnic. (The grand plans were foiled by a bout of COVID-19, said the trip's organizer, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/travel-planner-ultrawealthy-what-job-like-2022-10">Jules Maury</a>, who works for Scott Dunn Private, an ultra-exclusive, invite-only arm of a United Kingdom-based luxury-travel company.)</p><p>American Express Travel's <a href="https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/travel/discover/get-inspired/global-travel-trends">2022 Global Travel Trends</a> report, which used polling data collected in early February 2022, confirms the move toward bucket-list travel this year. Of the 3,000 people polled, 86% expected to spend more or the same amount on travel in 2022 as they did in a typical year before the pandemic, and 65% of respondents said they'd rather take a dream vacation than purchase a new car. </p><p>An August <a href="https://www.hospitalitynet.org/news/4112028.html#:~:text=In%20January%202022%2C%2085%25%20said,for%20getting%20back%20out%20there">report by the luxury-travel-agent network Virtuoso</a> found that future sales of travel are running 47% higher than in 2019. </p><p>Luxury-travel planners shared the receipts to prove how globetrotters are spending big despite uncertain economic times.</p><h2>Wealthy wanderlusters are seeking more extreme vacations</h2><p>Maury said she's seen an uptick in clients wanting to go the extra mile in their travels. </p><p>It's now "'I want to go to Rwanda to see the gorillas,' whereas it might have been before, 'We're gonna go to Kenya or Botswana.' Let's take it one step further," she said, adding that seeing the gorillas in Rwanda is "the ultimate safari." The trip can cost upward of $15,000 per person, <a href="https://www.afar.com/magazine/gorilla-trekking-rwanda-uganda">according to the travel site Afar.</a></p><p>Karen Loftus, of Women's Adventure Travels, said she's also seen an uptick in interest in Rwanda safaris. She's arranged trips at a lodge called Kataza House, run by the conservation-focused safari operator Singita, where prices start at $13,600 a night for five to eight guests. A stay at Singita's Serengeti House starts at $16,051 and tops out around $22,500 a night for five to eight guests. The <a href="https://singita.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Singita-Kataza-House-eBrochure-English.pdf">price doesn't include</a> the $1,500-per-person, per-day permit to trek into Volcanoes National Park to actually view the gorillas.</p><div type="image" title="An elephant wanders by Singita's Serengeti House." height="1534" width="2500" msid="95086434" hostid="261" sizebytes="970506"></div><p>Nature-spotting has been a big travel motivator lately. Maury said that she's had an increase in requests for trips to the Galapagos Islands, where the unique wildlife includes giant tortoises and 13 species of finches; to Brazil's Pantanal wetland region, famous for its jaguars; and to Greenland to see polar bears. </p><p>Clients are "adding a bit more dream factor" to their travels, Maury said.</p><h2>Remoteness is the ultimate luxury</h2><p>Maury and Loftus have both seen an uptick in interest in trips that let their clients get away from the stressors of modern life.</p><p>Maury has arranged visits to the <a href="https://www.holmenlofoten.no/kitchen-on-the-edge-of-the-world/">Kitchen on the Edge of the World</a>, a foodie pilgrimage to the Arctic Circle that features a rotating cast of the world's top chefs, like the seafood expert <a href="https://www.rickstein.com/">Rick Stein</a> and the Michelin-star-holding Basque chef <a href="https://www.saborrestaurants.co.uk/team">Nieves Barragán Mohacho</a>, that books up many months in advance. Only 20 people can attend each chef's limited run, with tickets costing $5,400 and up per person for the four-day experience. Spending quality time with family is still the No. 1 priority in luxury travel, according to a March 2022 Deloitte poll <a href="https://issuu.com/bhhsevents/docs/berkshire_hathaway_homeservices_2022_global_luxury">cited by Berkshire Hathaway</a>. </p><p>In August, Bill Finnegan, a mergers-and-acquisitions lawyer who lives in Houston, took his son, son-in-law, and nephew to golf at Pebble Beach, a picturesque public course on the outskirts of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. </p><p>The trip was arranged by the private vacation club Exclusive Resorts. Wealthy people are splurging on bucket-list trips, flying to the Arctic Circle for private-chef-catered meals, renting out African safari lodges, and spending $300,000 for a half-hour opera serenade

Buyers and sellers are active across all 13 sites, and in theory a pair of sneakers on eBay1 should be the price as the same pair on eBay2. </p><p>Given the dynamic pricing, however, there are occasions where buyers get to an old price before the seller can change it, or vice-versa. That's kind of what is happening to the Chicago Stock Exchange.</p><p>Here's how the filing describes latency arbitrage:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"'Latency arbitrage' means the practice of exploiting disparities in the price of a security or related securities that are being traded in different markets by taking advantage of the time it takes to access and respond to market information."</p><p>The Chicago Stock Exchange said in the filing that the LTAD is designed to neutralize high-speed traders engaged in latency arbitrage. In plain English, it is trying to stop buyers taking advantage of out-of-date prices. </p><p>The filing explains:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"LTAD is designed to neutralize microsecond speed advantages exploited by low-latency market participants engaged in latency arbitrage strategies that diminish displayed liquidity and impair price discovery in national market system ("NMS") securities."</p><p>The move is in response to a change in the trading of the SPDR S&amp;P 500 trust exchange-traded fund. The exchange said it first noticed latency arbitrage activity in the SPDR in January, and that as a result of this market makers have "dramatically" reduced displayed liquidity. This Year Has Been Kind Of Boring For Markets, And That's Probably A Good Thing

It is not Aaron Rodgers, who looked nearly unstoppable a year ago, but regressed this season. And it is not JJ Watt, who, despite all his talent, can't carry the Houston Texans past nine wins.</p><p>No, the greatest football player on the planet is Cam Newton, and the NFL will never be the same.</p><p>It is no secret that Newton has been great this season. He is one win away from his first Super Bowl ring, and he is also expected to win his first MVP award. But Newton's dominance over the sport goes beyond this one season. He is doing things that many thought couldn't be done.</p><p>To figure out how Newton went from multiple controversies in college and brooding leader of a Carolina Panthers team in need of direction to the greatest player alive, we first need to step back and look at what NFL teams have tried and failed to do.</p><p>Specifically, the NFL has gone through two notable fads in the past decade: mobile quarterbacks and the so-called Wildcat offense. Both hit the NFL with much fanfare but seemed to quickly fade away as flaws were quickly exposed.</p><p>Meanwhile, Newton is proving that you can do both and at the same time, but with one important catch: You need to have Superman on your team to pull it off.</p><p><strong>Cam Newton is the perfect weapon.</strong></p><p>In the NFL, there is a clear advantage that can be had if a team has a mobile quarterback. But as the league quickly learned, there is an inherent danger in having your quarterback running around and taking blows from huge defensive players who are just as fast. Just ask the Washington Redskins and Robert Griffin III.</p><p>While there is still a concern that Newton will get hurt, the concern is lessened by his size. Newton is basically a running back, built like a tight end, and playing the quarterback position.</p><p>Newton is listed at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, but is probably closer to 260 pounds. How big is that? Take a look at Newton standing next to a couple of other great quarterbacks. One of those things is carry five defenders on his back while fighting for a first down.</p><p><iframe width="800" height="450" frameborder="0" src="https://streamable.com/e/ckhe?muted=1&amp;autoplay=1"></iframe></p><p>There are not many running backs who can do that, and none of those running backs can throw the ball like Newton.</p><p>In other words, Newton is the perfect football player. He is big and fast and can throw the ball a country mile.</p><p><strong>Newton running the Wildcat offense is nearly unstoppable.</strong></p><p>In a nutshell, the Wildcat is an offense where a running back or wide receiver replaces the quarterback. The advantage is that by removing the quarterback from the equation on running plays, a team can add an extra blocker. The downside to this is that defenses know that almost every play in the Wildcat formation is going to be a running play, and it quickly faded to a gimmick treated more like a trick play.</p><p>While "Wildcat" is not a term often mentioned with the Panthers, that is basically what they are doing. Only they are doing it with Newton instead of a true running back or wide receiver.</p><p>"This is the ultimate Wildcat offense," Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman said on ESPN Radio. "It is essentially a 260-pound running back at the quarterback position that plays quarterback like a quarterback."</p><p>In the NFC championship game, Newton scored a touchdown on a designed run out of the shotgun. If this had been a running back taking the snap, this would be called the Wildcat.</p><p><iframe width="800" height="446" frameborder="0" src="https://streamable.com/e/uzgz?muted=1&amp;autoplay=1"></iframe></p><p>But make no mistake, as Aikman said, despite Newton's label as a quarterback, he is also a running back.</p><p>Take a look at the players who have scored the most rushing touchdowns in the NFL over the last five years:</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Cork Gaines/Business Insider" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56aa4afdc08a8036008bd451-960/01.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56aa4afdc08a8036008bd451-800-440/01.png" alt="01" data-mce-source="Cork Gaines/Business Insider" /></a><p class="source"><span>Cork Gaines/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>So, while Newton doesn't throw as many touchdown passes as the other top quarterbacks, he makes up for it on the ground.</p><p>Take a look at the quarterbacks who have produced the most touchdowns over the last two seasons combined. But none of that would matter if he couldn't also play the role of traditional NFL quarterback and throw from the pocket. It is the development of his passing skills that has taken him to a level where no other quarterback can reach right now.</p><p>Newton "can hit any spot on the field, from any launch point," Aikman said on ESPN Radio. "His ability to beat you in the pocket is really, in my opinion, ... what has allowed him to take the next step."</p><p>We saw Newton's passing ability late in the first quarter of the NFC championship game, when he hit Corey Brown deep over the middle. Brown then broke a tackle and scampered to the end zone for an 86-yard touchdown.</p><p><iframe width="800" height="446" frameborder="0" src="https://streamable.com/e/lc9e?muted=1&amp;autoplay=1"></iframe></p><p>While Brown was open and broke the tackle, there are actually a couple of things on this play that show just how good of a passer Newton has become.</p><p>The first is the pump fake. Cam doesn't stare down his receiver giving the safety a chance to cheat. And when he does pump fake, he doesn't oversell it as many quarterbacks tend to do. The quick pump is enough to put the safety into a spin cycle and allows Newton to quickly recock the arm and hit Brown in stride.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56aa524258c32348008b5fb9-838-465/1-28-2016 11-32-47 am.jpg" alt="1 28 2016 11 32 47 AM" data-mce-source="NFL Game Pass" /><p class="source"><span>NFL Game Pass</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>In other words, Brown was wide open thanks to Newton. But Newton wasn't done, either.</p><p>This is a pass 35 yards down the field. Even with the safety biting on the fake, if the pass is floated or is too far behind the receiver, there is still a chance for the defender to recover.</p><p>But this isn't just any quarterback. This is Cam Newton with a cannon for an arm, and he throws this pass 35 yards in the air on a rope. Game over.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56aa549b58c323ab078b5f59-843-493/1-28-2016 11-44-57 am.jpg" alt="Cam Newton" data-mce-source="NFL Game Pass" /><p class="source"><span>NFL Game Pass</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>That type of arm strength gives Newton a huge advantage over defenses and other quarterbacks.</p><p>Not only can Newton throw the ball farther than most quarterbacks, thus increasing the amount of real estate the other team must defend, but Newton can throw the ball downfield even if he has not set himself properly. Newton showed this off in the NFC championship game with one pass that got little attention, but may have been his best throw of the game.</p><p>Early in the third quarter, Newton saw tight end Greg Olsen break free down the middle. Instead of setting and throwing, something that would have given the safety time to react, Newton threw the ball nearly 35 yards off his back foot.</p><p><iframe width="800" height="446" frameborder="0" src="https://streamable.com/e/7zaq?muted=1&amp;autoplay=1"></iframe></p><p>You can probably count with one hand the number of quarterbacks in the world who can make that pass and none of the others can move like Newton.</p><p>But what truly sets Newton apart is the impact he will have on the league moving forward.</p><p>In the copycat NFL, most teams are going to turn to quarterbacks like Newton. It might not happen right away, but it will happen, and they can thank the coaches at the pee-wee and high-school levels. In the past, coaches at the lower levels put the best athletes at running back or wide receiver. But coaches got smart and started making sure the ball was in the hands of the best athletes as much as possible, and that meant taking that player and making him the quarterback. That change in thinking is just now starting to filter to the NFL.</p><p>So while Newton may seem like an outlier that can't be replicated, chances are he is just the start of a new wave of all-world athletes who are mobile enough to move, strong enough to throw, and smart enough to thrive. And thanks to Newton, teams won't be afraid to take a chance.</p><p>With the Super Bowl a week away, the big story has been how fans react to Newton, positively and negatively.
