The United States has returned over 200 cultural artifacts, worth of which is estimated at USD 100 million, to India, in the presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on an official US visit.<br />

"For some, these artifacts may be measured in monetary terms but for us this is beyond that. It's a part of our culture and heritage," said Modi.<br />

The artefacts include religious statues, bronzes and terra cotta pieces, some of which date back to 2,000 years, which were looted from some of India's most treasured religious sites.<br />

One of the pieces is a statue of Saint Manikkavichavakar, who was a Hindu mystic and poet from the Chola period (circa 850 AD to 1250 AD). The idol was stolen from the Sivan Temple in Chennai, and is valued at $1.5 million. A bronze sculpture of the Hindu god Ganesh, estimated to be 1,000-year old, is also one of the idols returned.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Slain Palestinian journalist <keyword id="13928280" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="shireen-abu-akleh" source="Orion">Shireen Abu Akleh</keyword> inspired generations to take up the profession.</li><li>Several journalists who have followed in her footsteps talked to Insider about her legacy.</li></ul><p>Longtime colleagues and young reporters inspired by slain Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh said the trailblazing figure could tell a story with her eyes.</p><p>Palestinian reporters Jalal Abukhater, Haya Yasmeen Nasser, and Faten Elwan told Insider that Abu Akleh became their idol as early as 2000 when she reported on the second Palestinian intifada for Al Jazeera.</p><p>"There was a war outside of our windows, and it was terrifying," Abukhater, a Jerusalemite who was seven years old at the time, told Insider. "I remember Shireen Abu Akleh as being one of the only reporters who was always outside bringing the news to our homes."</p><p>Two decades later Abukhater, still influenced by Abu Akleh, became her colleague in the field. </p><p>"It's like when there's a battle and the commander goes onto the battlefield to inspire the troops," Abukhater told Insider. "That's what we felt as journalists."</p><p>Abukhather called Abu Akleh a "martyr of truth." He attended her funeral service and said that without Israeli occupation checkpoints and walls blocking access "it could have been a million man march."</p><p>The three reporters who spoke to Insider personally knew the pallbearers transporting Abu Akleh's coffin, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/shireen-abu-akleh-funeral-investigation-israeli-police-palestinians/">who were beaten by Israeli police.</a> Despite that, the reporters said the mobilization was one of the largest and proudest they had seen in Jerusalem. It represented unity in grief and a commitment to carrying on Abu Akleh's message. </p><h2>A 'martyr of truth'</h2><p>Abu Akleh, who had worked as a TV correspondent for Al Jazeera since 1997, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/al-jazeera-journalist-shireen-abu-akleh-killed-in-west-bank-2022-5">was shot and killed</a> while wearing a "PRESS" vest and covering an Israeli military raid in the occupied city of Jenin on May 11, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/5/11/shireen-abu-akleh-israeli-forces-kill-al-jazeera-journalist">per Al Jazeera.</a></p><p>According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, <a href="https://cpj.org/data/killed/mideast/israel-and-the-occupied-palestinian-territory/?status=Killed&amp;motiveConfirmed%5B%5D=Confirmed&amp;type%5B%5D=Journalist&amp;cc_fips%5B%5D=IS&amp;start_year=1992&amp;end_year=2022&amp;group_by=location">at least 19</a> journalists have been killed since 1992 while reporting in <keyword id="6355882" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="israel" source="Orion">Israel</keyword> and Occupied <keyword id="11918690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="palestine" source="Orion">Palestine</keyword>. The Palestinian Ministry of Information claims that since 2000, at least 45 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli forces, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/5/12/infographic-the-journalists-killed-by-israeli-forces-since-2000">according to Al Jazeera.</a></p><p><a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/5/12/infographic-the-journalists-killed-by-israeli-forces-since-2000">Eyewitness accounts</a> from Al Jazeera colleagues, an initial <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/5/11/calls-grow-for-independent-investigation-into-aklehs-death">investigation</a> by the Palestinian Authority, as well as an independent investigation by <a href="https://www.bellingcat.com/news/mena/2022/05/14/unravelling-the-killing-of-shireen-abu-akleh/">Bellingcat</a> all point to Israeli Defense Forces shooting and killing Abu Akleh, though Bellingcat said it could not be 100% certain without seeing additional evidence.</p><p>The Israeli military has offered shifting narratives on the incident — first blaming Palestinian militants located elsewhere in the city and <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/veteran-al-jazeera-journalist-shot-dead-during-israeli-raid-in-jenin/">saying that</a> Abu Akleh and her colleagues were "armed with cameras." </p><p>In an interim report, the Israeli military <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/initial-idf-probe-of-reporters-death-proposes-2-scenarios-for-who-fired-fatal-shot/">later admitted</a> that the IDF could have accidentally fired the bullet. Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, chief and general staff of the Israeli army, said "at this stage, we cannot determine by whose fire she was harmed and we regret her death."</p><p>The foreign minister said that Israel was offering to conduct a joint investigation with Palestinian authorities.</p><p>The EU and UN Security Council <a href="https://usun.usmission.gov/statement-by-the-president-of-the-un-security-council-on-the-killing-of-journalist-shireen-abu-akleh-may-13-2022/">condemned</a> the killing and called for an independent investigation. The US, confirming that Abu Akleh was an American citizen, called for a thorough investigation. Later State Department spokesperson Ned Price said that the US <a href="https://www.state.gov/briefings/department-press-briefing-may-11-2022/">trusted</a> Israel to conduct its own investigation.</p><p>The Palestinian Authority, however, has said it does not have any faith in a solo or joint Israeli investigation.</p><h2>'The woman I wanted to be one day'</h2><p>Nasser, a travel journalist inspired by Abu Akleh, also remembered being fixated on Abu Akleh as a girl in Jerusalem.</p><p>"I never felt like a president represents me, or people in <keyword id="11893346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics" source="Orion">politics</keyword> represent me, but Shireen was always that person, and I saw myself in Shireen as a little girl," Nasser said. "When you would turn on the TV, as a Palestinian woman, you would see a woman presenting to you – she was a reflection of the women I grew up with and the woman I wanted to be one day, not the woman that the Western media always painted us as."</p><p>Like Abukhater, Nasser said that Abu Akleh not only inspired her life and career path but also instilled fearlessness. Eventually, they met, and Nasser has become an acclaimed journalist in the region herself.</p><p>"She's seen parts of Palestine that people who lived there their whole lives under occupation haven't seen," Nasser said. </p><h2>A teacher and a lifelong friend</h2><p>Elwan, one of Abu Akleh's close friends and colleagues told Insider that the veteran journalist also inspired her to stay on her path to becoming a journalist. She rode with Abu Akleh in the ambulance from the scene of her killing back to a hospital in Ramallah on May 11.</p><p>She said that Abu Akleh — originally a friend of her journalism teacher — gave her advice to help her work on her pronunciation for broadcast reports, a nudge that she says gave her the confidence to become a reporter.</p><p>By 2000, the two were working in the field together under Israeli fire, covering the intifada. Elwan, a seasoned war correspondent who worked for Al-Hurra TV, told Insider that it was the care with which Abu Akleh approached stories that set her apart.</p><p>"What was different about Shireen, is that when she worked on a story, it was her face, her body language, and her interaction with the story," Elwan said. "It's a thing that you cannot teach; it's a thing that is built-in a personality, and this is what Palestine is going to miss." </p>

'A martyr for truth and a saint': Palestinian journalists describe Shireen Abu Akleh's legacy

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong><keyword id="12718519" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="david-archuleta" source="Orion">David Archuleta</keyword> sat down for an interview with Variety.</strong></li><li><strong>Archuleta, 30, recalled his time as a contestant on "<keyword id="12528075" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="american-idol" source="Orion">American Idol</keyword>" season seven.</strong></li></ul><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idol-runners-up-ranked-success-2021-4#david-archuleta-became-a-teen-idol-after-he-lost-season-seven-to-david-cook-in-2008-14" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"American Idol" alum David Archuleta</a> recalled his time competing on the TV series as a teenager, calling it "traumatic." </p><p>In an interview with <a href="https://variety.com/2021/music/features/david-archuleta-coming-out-american-idol-mormon-1235129586/">Variety's Adam B. Vary, </a>the 30-year-old spoke about everything from his sexuality to hitting stardom while being an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At one point, Archuleta reminisced about his "American Idol" journey.</p><p>"I felt so disconnected from everything," Archuleta, 30, told Variety. "Like, 13 years later, I'm piecing together what actually was going on. But it's still a process because I still don't understand why people were so into it." </p><p>He added: "I think I was just in protection mode the whole time. If anything, I was putting a wall between me and everyone else." </p><p>Archuleta burst onto the "American Idol" scene at just 16-years-old and would go on to place second behind winner David Cook on season seven.  He told Variety that the experience was "traumatic" and "miserable" because of the tension, adding that most of his fellow contestants had some sort of nervous breakdown during filming. </p><div type="image" title="American Idol alums David Archuleta stands beside David Cook." height="2592" width="3456" msid="88231810" hostid="261"></div><p>As reported by Variety, Archuleta remembered competing in round two of the semifinals with his cover of John Lennon's "Imagine," which successfully impressed the judging panel. </p><p>Former "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson told Archuleta that he was "born to do exactly what you're doing," but all Archuleta could think in his head was, "I don't want to be here anymore." </p><p>The outlet noted that the quirks of fame — cheering fans and thousands of "American Idol" votes each week — were confusing at the time. Archuleta said he was overwhelmed by "older male fans" speculating about his sexuality, the hectic schedule, and being pitted against his fellow contestants.</p><p>However, Archuleta struggles to blame the same TV show that cemented him as a teen idol.</p><p>"I get afraid to blame things on 'American Idol,' because something in me is programmed to say, 'I have to be grateful, because where would I be without it?'" he told Variety. "But at the same time, I've talked to other 'American Idol' contestants about how we all have trust issues. Like: 'You can't trust anyone anymore, not even your own family.' That's what we were told."</p><p>Archuleta continued to say the process was "like some weird grooming process, from the very first audition, the way that they were speaking to us, kind of like, 'You're powerless little bugs. If you step out of line, then you're out of here, and you're going to lose this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.'"</p><p>Representatives for David Archuleta did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. </p><div type="image" title="Former contestant David Archuletta performs live on the American Idol Season 8 Top 7 Elimination Show" height="1978" width="2638" msid="88231812" hostid="261"></div><p>In a statement to Variety, former "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said he had a "wonderful" time with Archuleta. </p><p>"I had a wonderful time working with David and was totally unaware of his grievances. I'm so sorry he has a bad recollection of his experiences on the show. He did so well in the competition, and his battle with David Cook provided an extremely exciting Finale," the statement read. </p><p>Archuleta went on to record his first single, "Crush," that went double platinum and appeared on teen TV series like Nickelodeon's "iCarly." </p><p>In June 2021, Archuleta made headlines after revealing <a href="https://www.insider.com/american-idols-david-archuleta-comes-out-as-lgbtqia-community-member-2021-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he's a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. </a></p><p>At the time, he wrote that he was unsure about his sexuality. He initially came out as gay to his family in 2014 before later deciding he was on a "spectrum of bisexual" or maybe asexual. </p>

'American Idol' alum David Archuleta called his time on the show 'miserable' and 'traumatic'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>At 41, Rob Furber felt like he might be entering a midlife crisis. </li><li>He's a self-proclaimed indie fan defined by '90s music and planned a trip to Kurt Cobain's memorial.</li></ul><p>I played around with a few ideas last year when it came time to tackle my burgeoning <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/midlife-crisis-trip-taught-me-how-want-to-live-2023-11">midlife crisis</a>.</p><p>Purchase a secondhand convertible? Get some ink done? Perhaps travel the world? The bright idea I settled on was to pay my respects to the music icon of my youth.</p><p>Seattle has given us Bill Gates, Boeing, "Frasier," Starbucks, and grunge music, but among those "famous five," only one mattered to me. For a die-hard indie kid defined by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-90s-songs-party-playlist-2017-8">'90s music</a>, I was set on making a pilgrimage to the city that gave us Nirvana and going straight to the park that had become a shrine to Kurt Cobain.</p><p>I'm a man who has consistently failed to rise from bed with a jubilant leap and tends instead toward a tardy lollop accompanied by a scowl. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/kurt-cobain-childhood-home-opening-its-doors-for-private-tours-2021-8">Cobain</a> was bestowed with hero status for being the patron saint of slackers.</p><h2>Next year marks the 30th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death</h2><p>He was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/dave-grohl-kurt-cobain-death-memoir-nirvana-2021-10">found dead</a> in a greenhouse above the garage at his Lake Washington home on April 8, 1994 — though the coroner said he had died on April 5 — and some of his ashes were scattered in the nearby Wishkah River. As he has no grave, fans visit Seattle's Viretta Park, which borders the house where he lived with Courtney Love.</p><p>I timed my arrival for midafternoon, figuring no self-respecting fan would pitch up before midday given everything he stood for.</p><p>In the early '90s, Cobain's raw, tortured voice reached out to those alienated by the saccharine smiles of the prepackaged pop acts that blotted out almost everything else in the music charts.</p><p>Idolized by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-x-forgotten-they-like-it-that-way-2023-12">Gen Xers</a>, he and his music were seen as part of people's own disenfranchised, apathetic youth, which effortlessly progressed in my case to a disenfranchised, apathetic adulthood, as well as a dispiriting office 9-to-5 existence.</p><div type="image" title="Man on boat near Seattle" height="432" width="576" msid="106457783" hostid="261" sizebytes="28846"></div><p>It was a brisk, overcast spring Seattle day, and my initial impression of Viretta Park was that it resided in an extremely affluent area. I later discovered the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-howard-schultz-ceo-gen-z-2023-3">Starbucks founder, Howard Schultz</a>, used to live on the other side of the park from Cobain and Love, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/the-time-seattle-neighbors-sued-howard-schultz-and-kurt-cobains-estate-over-a-driveway-in-a-park/#:~:text=Cobain%20and%20Courtney%20Love%20Cobain,also%20partly%20on%20park%20land.">The Seattle Times</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Wooden bench in Viretta Park, Seattle with messages for Kurt Cobain." height="1858" width="2787" msid="106457785" hostid="261" sizebytes="589810"></div><p>It was immediately recognizable as the Cobain memorial, with two wooden benches etched in graffiti messages from fans.</p><p>"Your presence is needed right now in our world," one said.</p><h2>Nirvana fans span generations.</h2><p>Slowly but surely, a trickle of mourners came. Within an hour, at least 30 had come and gone. Seeing so many younger fans pitch up, many of whom must have discovered Nirvana retrospectively, was a striking reminder of how music spans generations. A steady stream of teens and early-20-somethings paid their respects, dressed with that timeless "alt-rock" élan — black T-shirts, dyed hair, and assorted piercings heavily to the fore.</p><p>Cobain was an icon of my youth. There was something about his voice. It was very real and spoke to me. Sometimes you couldn't quite make out what he was singing, which added to his mystique.</p><p>I was left pondering his legacy. Much like other musicians and artists who died before their time, Cobain's suicide at a tragically young age has given greater resonance to his life and work. "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/dave-grohl-nirvana-could-change-nevermind-album-cover-2021-10">Nevermind</a>," released in September 1991 as Nirvana's second studio album, jettisoned grunge to the mainstream, contributing to a period in music that, for a certain person of a certain vintage, has come to find lasting significance.</p><p>Cobain's death was almost a defining moment. I saw it as the day the music died. He joined the macabre <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/27-club-celebrities-musicians-died-27-years-old-2017-9">"27 Club," made up of famous artists who died at 27</a>, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and, later, Amy Winehouse. Since then, it's felt like something has gone missing. Had I misplaced it, or had the world?</p><h2>The trip helped me grow up</h2><p>Now, here I was in my 40s still trying to cling to everything Cobain stood for. I could see I was guilty of living in the past — essentially a man-boy who refused to grow the hell up. Yet as an incredibly potent symbol of youth, his elixir was barreled deep inside and would forever remain a part of me.</p><p>Rather than consign it to history, I left Viretta Park with new-found vigor, acknowledging the spirit Cobain came to encapsulate could still be applied to middle age.</p><p>Things had started to fade away, ambition had gotten waylaid, and I had been sleepwalking my way through life, a cog in someone else's wheel. I tackled my midlife crisis by visiting Kurt Cobain's Seattle shrine. The trip prompted me to quit my job.  

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Samuel Bateman, an FLDS leader accused of child abuse and polygamy, is repeating history.</li><li>The son of the sect's longtime "prophet" told Insider that Batemen is following his dad's footsteps.</li></ul><p>Wendell Jeffson, the 22-year-old son of the infamous cult leader Warren Jeffs, told Insider that the up-and-coming FLDS leader being accused of keeping 20 wives — most of them under 15 — "took a page out of my dad's playbook."</p><p>After years of trying to get as close as he could to the Jeffs family, 46-year-old Samuel Bateman has declared himself "prophet" and has been accused of similar abuses as his former idol, Jeffson told Insider.</p><p>Jeffs, the longtime "prophet" to the Fundamentalist Church of Later-Day Saints, continues to run the sect — largely considered a cult — while serving a life sentence on child sexual abuse convictions related to marrying off young girls to his older male followers.</p><p>But since 2019, Bateman has garnered around 50 followers and 20 wives. His wives are mostly children, many of them under 15, according to the FBI. </p><p>Bateman, too, now stands accused of <a href="https://www.insider.com/flds-prophet-marry-underage-daughter-doritos-fbi-samuel-Bateman-2022-12">praying on young girls, including his own teenage daughter</a> who he told he wanted to marry and impregnate, according to an FBI affidavit in a related kidnapping case.</p><p>The document was filed in a case out of US District Court in the Eastern District of Washington, where Bateman and two of his followers are accused of transporting minor girls across state lines for sex.</p><p>"He's taken the same message that Warren Jeffs used, but is putting it in his own words," Jeffson said. "It's the same thing repeating itself."</p><p>The Fundamentalist Church of Later-Day Saints is a radical group that splintered off of the mainstream Mormon church 93 years ago. The Mormon church abandoned the practice of polygamy over a century ago and is not affiliated with FLDS.</p><div type="image" title="Wendell Jeffson" height="590" width="787" msid="96063609" hostid="261"></div><h2>Splitting the church</h2><p>In 2o07, Jeffs was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison for his role in marrying off a 14-year-old girl to a one of his followers against her will. While that conviction was later overturned over improper jury instructions, Jeffs had already been extradited to Texas, where he was convicted of the rape and sexual abuse of two of his own child brides. </p><p>Despite being behind bars for over 15 years, serving a life sentence, Jeffs continues to lead a group of FLDS followers from prison. Early in his imprisonment, his jail calls — in which he gave orders to his church — would be broadcasted over loud speakers at the "Yearning for Zion Ranch, a massive FLDS compound that Jeffs built in remote part of Texas while avoiding law enforcement, his son told Insider. </p><p>That ranch was raided and seized by law enforcement in 2014, but Jeffs released a new edict to members as recently as August, <a href="https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news/new-edict-purportedly-from-flds-leader-warren-jeffs-raises-alarm">Fox 13 reported.</a></p><p>Jeffson, who abandoned the church and condemns his father, said that many of the FLDS still consider Jeffs the prophet. </p><p>In recent years, though, Bateman started calling himself the new prophet, claiming to have replaced Jeffs.</p><p>In 2019, Bateman was married to only one woman, but their marriage became troubled after he told her he was prophet, which she didn't believe, according to the FBI documents. </p><p>At that point, he told the woman he was meant to marry their daughter, who was a minor, according to the FBI. <a href="https://www.insider.com/cult-leader-polygamist-sect-wanted-underage-daughter-wife-fbi-says-2022-12">He was constantly talking about wanting to touch and kiss her.</a> On one trip home to Colorado City, Arizona from Canada, Bateman told the young girl he wanted to marry her and make her have a child — <a href="https://www.insider.com/flds-prophet-marry-underage-daughter-doritos-fbi-samuel-bateman-2022-12">bribing her with $5o and bags of Doritos</a>, according to the document.</p><p>In their affidavit, federal investigators say that Bateman and his followers refer to Jeffs as "Uncle Warren." Bateman tells them that Jeffs status as prophet has translated to him. </p><p>Jeffson told Insider that he's heard from his brothers and other people still in the church that Bateman has tried to take control of the FLDS, but has only collected a small group of people from the Arizona community. </p><p>"Most people in the FLDS still consider Warren Jeffs prophet. Sam Bateman has come in and try to take that away," he said. " I don't know too much about it, but it sounds like its been an interesting situation that's been developing over the last few years." </p><p>Jeffson told Insider that he and his family remember Bateman from their time in the church and considered him "mentally sick."</p><p>He was always trying to get close to his family, which was treated like royalty among the FLDS, with the community tithing to the family to keep them in luxury cars and living an elite lifestyle, he said. </p><p>He was trying to advance his own position in the church for as long as Jeffson can remember, he said.</p><p>"You know when you have a group of friends, and you have that one person and they really want to join the group of friends?" Jeffson said. "That's how he was toward my brothers, trying to get into the circle of the Jeff's family." </p><p>Now that Bateman has a following, Jeffson said he has taken the depravity even a step further than his father, who he is estranged from and condemns. That's because Jeffs never married any of his daughters — though he talked about it.</p><p>The FBI affidavit that details allegations of child abuse by Bateman doesn't say he married his 14-year-old daughter but reports that he kissed her repeatedly, sent her sexual messages, and told her mother that they were meant to be married.</p><p>Jeffson, however, said it was understood by some members of the FLDS that Bateman "married" his daughter by FLDS standards.</p><p>Plural marriages are illegal in the United States, though they are practiced unofficially by some groups like the FLDS.</p><div type="image" title="Wendell Jeffson" height="641" width="853" msid="96038247" hostid="261"></div><h2>History repeating itself</h2><p>Jeffson — who changed his last name from Jeffs to symbolize his new beginning — left the FLDS when he was 18. </p><p>In the FLDS community in Colorado City, on the Utah-Arizona border, his father married off couples — some of whom were <a href="https://www.sltrib.com/news/polygamy/2017/09/10/once-a-child-bride-elissa-wall-now-has-ambitions-to-remake-a-polygamous-community/" rel=" nofollow">children</a>, according to <a href="https://www.bishop-accountability.org/news2007/09_10/2007_10_31_StateOf_Download126.pdf" rel=" nofollow">court records</a> and <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/arizona-child-bride-escapes-flds-community-children/story?id=18292889" rel=" nofollow">media reports</a>. When police began investigating the rape of a minor in the community, authorities began looking for Jeffs as an accomplice in the abuse.</p><p>There, Jeffs took on dozens of additional wives <a href="https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/with-god-on-their-side/" rel=" nofollow">as young as 12 years old</a>. Jeffson said he grew up in a home as large as a hotel with more than 50 siblings and was made to call those 12-year-olds "mom."</p><p>While Jeffson's immediate family — his mother and sister — left the community, several of his brothers remain in the sect. </p><p>Bateman's followers, though, tend to be people who remained in Colorado City. Cole, Lebron James, and Future they cannot be saved by them. With help from Baby Keem and Chicago singer Sam Dew, the rapper also calls out fairweather friends on this track. He's suspicious of those "smiling in his face" and isn't sold on those who "<a href="https://genius.com/25810004/Kendrick-lamar-baby-keem-and-sam-dew-savior/I-seen-niggas-arguing-about-whos-blacker-even-blacked-out-screens-and-called-it-solidarity"> blacked out screens and called it solidarity</a>." </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "Seen a Christian say the vaccine mark of the beast / Then he caught COVID and prayed to Pfizer for relief / Then I caught COVID and started to question <a href="https://www.insider.com/kyrie-irving-200-million-contract-extension-hanging-over-nets-2022-4">Kyrie </a>/ Will I stay organic or hurt in this bed for two weeks? (You really wanna know?)"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 10/10 Some people I love are still disappointed that I let "them put that thing in my arm," so it felt validating to hear Lamar rap about suspicions surrounding the COVID-19 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fda-authorizes-3rd-pfizer-booster-shot-for-children-5-11-2022-5?_ga=2.183352992.765532686.1652666837-1996747788.1647018266">vaccine</a> in the Black community. </p><h2>'We Cry Together' centers Lamar and Taylour Paige as they show us exactly how stupid we sound in an argument</h2><p>Lamar and "Zola" actress <a href="https://www.insider.com/zola-aziah-king-movie-nudity-taylour-paige-riley-keough-2021-6">Taylour Paige</a> go back and forth on this record where they spit jabs, co-written by The Alchemist, Bēkon, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florence-welch-calvin-harris-slam-conservatives-for-using-their-songs-2017-10?_ga=2.81952016.765532686.1652666837-1996747788.1647018266">Florence Welch</a>, J.LBS, and Lamar himself. He's aided on the track by British singer-songwriter Sampha.</p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "Daddy issues kept me competitive, that's a fact, n— / I don't give a fuck what's the narrative, I am that n— / When Kanye got back with Drake, I was slightly confused / Guess I'm not mature as I think, got some healin' to do"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 10/10 I'm just glad someone else admitted that petty can be powerful. </p><h2>'Count Me Out' sees Lamar admit that reaching for the crown is a result of his tendency to 'care too much' </h2><p>Disc two opens with Lamar saying how much he likes to be counted out by those who doubt him. Here he seems to resolve his misgivings about what is real and what is not seen in "Mother I Sober." He boldly states "this time around I trust myself." </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "Some put it on the Devil when they fall short / I put it on my ego, lord of all lords"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 10/10 This is the track with the most replay value for me. It passed the car test with flying colors. </p><iframe width="1148" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0kS-MtxPr9I" frameborder="0"></iframe><h2>'Purple Hearts' references Christ, codeine, and cheating spouses seamlessly   </h2><p>This song closes the first disc with appearances from Summer Walker and Ghostface Killah. With his "crown on Bob Marley" and his "wrist on Yo Gotti," Lamar explains why he ducks the trappings of celebrity life and chooses to remove himself from friendships with other "rappers" because of his suspicion about their "intentions."</p><p><strong>Best Lyrics:</strong> "Summer in the storm, I cannot conform / I just might love you still, just think I love me more / It ain't love if you gon' judge me for my past / No, it ain't love if you ain't never eat my ass /  It ain't love if you just only tie me down because you seen me in my bag / That's why I'm anti-everyone before this mask"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 10/10 If there's something more dependable than Walker having a "forget all y'all, I'm out" attitude, I haven't seen it yet. </p><h2>'Worldwide Steppers' sees Lamar highlight his shortcomings and reject efforts to reduce art to analytics</h2><p>The third track on the first disc dives into stories of disassociation, promiscuity, and grief. Notoriously more private than his peers, Lamar rarely delves into details of his relationship. Still, here he shines a light on the developmental stages he's gone through as an artist, a trauma survivor, and a Black man with his fianceé Whitney Alford at his side. </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "The media's the new religion, you killed the consciousness (What the fuck?) / Your jealousy is way too pretentious, you killed accomplishments (What the fuck?) / N— killed freedom of speech, everyone sensitive (What the fuck?) / If your opinion fuck 'round and leak, might as well send your will (What the—) / The industry has killed the creators, I'll be the first to say (What the fuck?) / To each exec', "I'm saving your children"—We can't negotiate"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 10/10 One: This should be the official anthem for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/influencers-share-favorite-creator-economy-startups-to-make-money-2022-1">creator economy</a>. As he fasts from fooling around with randoms and chilling with hangers-on, Lamar tells his peers that they "gotta watch your homies and police" because "clout chasing" is a "hell of a disease." </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "I would never live my life on a computer / IG'll get you life for a chikabooya / More power to ya, love 'em from a distance / Why you always in the mirror more than the bitches?" </p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 10/10 Somehow boasting about boundaries has become the new black. He centers on the t<a href="https://www.insider.com/r-kelly-verdict-sex-crimes-trial-2021-9">rauma of R. Kelly,</a> and wonders aloud if <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2021/05/21/oprah-the-me-you-cant-see-talks-rape-and-trauma/5186682001/">"Oprah found closure." </a></p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "Tyler Perry, the face of a thousand rappers / Using violence to cover what really happen / I know somebody's listenin' / Past life regressions to know my conditions / It's based off experience / Comma for comma, my habits insensitive"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 10/10 This track feels the most connected to the album's prelude "The Heart Part 5" in which Lamar discusses living in a land where "hurt people more people." </p><h2>'Savior (Interlude)' speaks to the lack of civility you can encounter in your own home </h2><p>In the fourth track on the second disc, which features Lamar's cousin Baby Keem and German spiritual self-help author Eckhart Tolle, the rapper sets the scene for the following song "Savior." </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "You ever seen your mama strung out while you studied division? Your uncle ever stole from you, day after Christmas? / Seen both of those in the county jail visits / The first and the fifteenth, the only religion" </p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 9/10  Lamar expresses how trauma can create reverence for payday. If you've ever stepped foot in a check-cashing spot after waiting all day for the mailman to bring salvation to your mailbox, or argued with your cousin about why chicken Cup O' Noodles is the best flavor, you can relate.</p><iframe width="1148" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tvNSXS4x9nc" frameborder="0"></iframe><h2>'United in Grief' reunites Lamar with the listener after '1855 days' of writer's block</h2><p>The first track on disc one sets the tone for the album perfectly. </p><p><strong>Best Lyrics:</strong> "Paid lottery for it, I ain't want it in portions"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 9/10  With references to writers block, therapy, and the trends he's been observing while sitting in silence, this track stoked my excitement. </p><h2>'Mirror' forces us all to acknowledge our own 'toxic energy' </h2><p>In "Mirror," which closes out the second disc, Lamar releases himself from the prison of prestige and encourages the listener to find their own path to freedom because we might be the "main character" but we're kind of the villain too. </p><p><strong>Best Lyrics:</strong> "Workin' on myself, the counselin' is not easy / Don't you point a finger, just to point a finger / 'Cause critical thinkin' is a deal-breaker / Faith in one man is a ship sinking"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 8/10  </p><iframe width="1148" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Vo89NfFYKKI" frameborder="0"></iframe><h2>On 'Mother I Sober,' Lamar personalizes the references to generational trauma he embedded in 'Mr. Morale.'</h2><p>In the eighth track on the second disk, which features Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Lamar shares a story of being gaslit by a parent who didn't believe his experience with abuse as they were still suffering from their own trauma.</p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "In the shadows clingin' to my soul as my only critic / Where's my faith? Told you I was Christian, but just not today"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 8/10 I'm not crying. You're crying. </p><h2>'N95' reminds us that flexing 'outside' isn't always all it's cracked up to be</h2><p>Lamar comments on the hypocrisy in our cultural addiction to aesthetics and encourages us to look at who we are beyond how we want to be perceived on the second track of the first disc. </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "The industry wants n— and bitches to sleep in a box while they making a mockery followin' us / This ain't Monopoly, watchin' for love/ this ain't monogamy, y'all gettin' fucked"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 8/10 Women have overshadowed men as faces of hip-hop consumerism and there's something about Lamar rapping about Birkins as the "mask" for designer drip that comforts me. </p><iframe width="1148" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Lx3MGrafykU" frameborder="0"></iframe><h2>'Die Hard' taps into the fear that there really is such a thing as too much honesty </h2><p>The long-suffering hip-hop girlfriend narrative is a staple in hip-hop, but it's slowly being shaken up by songs like these. With help from Blxst and Amanda Reifer, the rapper is upfront about who he's been and who he wants to be. Old habits are no match for his new ideas. </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "We all got enough to lie about / My truth too complicated to hide now / Can I open up? Is it safe or not? / I'm afraid a little, you relate or not?"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 8/10 The track is even more beautiful because other songs on the project show how he intends to be better.</p><h2>In 'Rich (Interlude),' Kodak Black details his struggles in the industry.</h2><p>Controversial rapper Kodak Black, who pleaded guilty to charges of assault and battery in an incident involving a teenage girl, jumps in front of the criticisms he knows are coming his way for being featured on Lamar's album. Following Lamar's verse, Black shares his desire to give his children what he lacked and appears to shed light on at least part of how he became such a controversial figure in the culture. </p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "It's like six o'clock, bitch, you talk too much / You makin' it awkward, love I mean, it's hard enough"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 8/10 Anything that makes me think about my <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcp2KpgElRI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">favorite scene in "BMF"</a> is fine by me.</p><h2>'Auntie Diaries' is a big swing that brings to mind 2011's 'Tammy's Song'</h2><p>In the sixth track from disc two, Lamar reveals his own experiences with how the LGBTQ community intersected with his family dynamics.</p><p><strong>Best lyrics:</strong> "I said, 'Mr. Preacherman, should we love thy neighbor? / The laws of the land or the heart, what's greater?' /I recognize the study she was taught since birth / But that don't justify the feelings that my cousin preserved /The building was thinking out loud, bad angel / That's when you looked at me and smiled, said, 'Thank you' / The day I chose humanity over religion / The family got closer, it was all forgiven"</p><p><strong>Score:</strong> 7/10 The song has the ability to have us question who we were before we realized others were watching for quite a while. </p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5bb780c3a4cb625ab4202b98-1152/v1-6.jpg" border="0" alt="old man &amp; the gun" data-mce-source="Fox Searchlight"><p class="source"><span>Fox Searchlight</span></p><p class="caption">Robert Redford in "The Old Man &amp; the Gun."</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>"The Old Man &amp; the Gun" stars Robert Redford as a 70-year-old bank robber.</li><li>But director David Lowery tells the story in a way that makes it more than just a cops-and-robbers movie.</li></ul><p>&#xa0;</p><p><em><strong>Every weekend we pick an indie movie currently playing in theaters we think is definitely worth your time and money, and this week's is "The Old Man &amp; the Gun."</strong></em></p><p>From the opening shot of "The Old Man &amp; the Gun" you know you are watching something from a different era.&#xa0;</p><p>Director David Lowery's use of grainy Super 16mm film to capture the story of a 70-year-old bank robber transports you immediately to the early 1980s, where the internet and smart phones are replaced with transistor radios and pay phones.&#xa0;</p><p>And at the center of it all is Robert Redford. Still sporting that grin that made him a big-screen idol in the very decade the movie is set in, it seems like Redford is having the time of his life in every frame of the movie playing a character he knows how to do so well, a charmer from the wrong side of the tracks.&#xa0;</p><p>Based on a true story, Redford plays career criminal Forrest Tucker, who&#xa0;<span>since 15 has spent most of his life getting sent to prisons and eventually escaping them. The movie looks at Tucker as he goes on a string of bank heists after escaping San Quentin State Prison.</span></p><p><span>But this is hardly a "Bonnie and Clyde" cops-and-robbers movie. Lowery, who has always made movies that have a mythical feel ("Ain't Them Bodies Saints," "Pete's Dragon"), delves deeper into the persona of Tucker and what makes him tick. From the relationship he has with his crew (played by Danny Glover and Tom Waits) to his own vagabond lifestyle that pulls in Jewel (Sissy Spacek) to how he goes about robbing banks. Though he has a gun (we never really ever see him holding it when he's in the bank), it's more a wink and a smile that leads him to getting the money.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Lowery obviously uses the incredible talents of Redford to push all this forward. One of the more meatier roles he's done in a while (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/old-man-and-the-gun-director-on-closing-out-robert-redfords-iconic-career-2018-9">supposedly this is his final movie</a>), he uses every moment on film to explore the layers of his character while also entertaining the heck out of us, the audience.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"The Old Man &amp; the Gun" has an ease to it that sucks you in. 'The Old Man & the Gun' celebrates not only the talents of Robert Redford, but a style of storytelling rarely appreciated anymore
