Although AI and ML are not new concepts, the limelight on ChatGPT and its rapid advancements has brought the focus back on them. While it is accepted that repetitive tasks have the highest potential of being automated, TCS’ chief HR officer Milind Lakkad said, “Jobs will not reduce, they will change. Client meetings 'start and stop with ChatGPT' says India's largest IT company

Even in times when demand is slow, discretionary spends are elusive, the new-age technology is bringing work as well as excitement into the IT outsourcing market. Although the size of the deals is small at the moment, genAI has ‘captured the imagination’ of clients, say top executives of Indian IT companies. TCS and HCL Tech said that most of their <keyword id="19151325" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="genai-projects" source="Orion">genAI projects</keyword> are proof-of-concept or pilot stages. “Deal sizes are small and are mostly under $1 million where clients are trying them out. But there is potential to convert a part of our Jaguar Land Rover with AI and ML capabilities,” said N Ganapathy Subramaniam, COO of TCS at the company’s Q2 earnings press conference. HCL Tech’s MD C Vijayakumar too shared that most of the genAI deals they are bagging are either half a million or sub-$1 million deals. But they are currently working on a hundred such opportunities. “We have been selected as a partner by this very large software major for their product testing and sustenance efforts. We are providing GenAI on a private language model to improve resolution rate and speed efficiency,” said Vijayakumar. Infosys CEO Salil Parekh also shared that they are working on some proprietary large language models (LLMs). “AI is a part of almost every deal we do. And, GenAI is getting there. As it expands and more and larger enterprises get into it, it will be very exciting,” he added. A catalog of AI opportunities A few months back, all tech majors announced big moves in the generative AI space. Wipro announced that it will spend as much as $1 billion over three years to build capabilities. TCS, HCL Tech partnered with software major NVIDIA to skill their employees. As of September end, TCS said that they have 100,000-strong GenAI-ready workforce. They said they also have as many as 250 Gen AI opportunities in the pipeline. “When we started generative AI, they were all about knowledge discovery. As clients understand more, the genAI is getting more complicated. We are now working for a co-pilot for a financial advisor on what advice to give clients, help underwriting policies,” explaining K Krithivasan, CEO of TCS. TCS said that it has identified opportunities across various verticals, identified use cases and cataloged them per vertical. With that it says that it’s planning to go and engage with clients and have conversations on the same. “With this, we can have conversations with our clients – be in CRM or payments space and wealth advisory and other use cases,” explained Ganapathy. HCL Tech too is working on use cases related to banking and financial sector. “We signed a generative AI deal with a to improve their risk and compliance efforts – which is a very big effort in financial services. There are a lot of transactions happening on this front, and we have discussed how we can help,” said Vijayakumar. The buzz for cost optimization and automation deals has gone up in the last few months. Clients are looking to ramp down their expenses and intend to use tech to help with their overall cost reduction efforts. As automation gains ground, AI and ML will find more use cases – and most tech companies are confident that a little of it can spill into the new and emerging area of GenAI as well.

Unlike most tech CEOs and other top leaders in general, he is unafraid to speak his mind. So much so that Gurnani made OpenAI CEO Sam Altman back down and clarify his comments that it’s hopeless for India to compete with his company on AI. The first to respond was Gurnani who ‘accepted a challenge’ on behalf of India — to create a ChatGPT-like product. “From one CEO to another, challenge accepted,” Gurnani said after Altman said, “The way this works is we're going to tell you, it’s totally hopeless to compete with us on training foundational models, you shouldn’t try and it’s your job to try anyways,” responding to a question on the capability of small team of Indians to try it. Altman’s comments, however, ended up reportedly offending the likes of minister of state for IT and electronics, Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Meanwhile, the 64-year-old Gurnani, never one to shy away from taking on challenges or voicing his opinions, however contrary — has taken the bull by the horn one more time. A votary of moonlighting Not too long ago, when moonlighting was a hot debate, almost every tech major including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys opposed it calling it an ‘ethical issue’. In fact, Wipro’s executive chairman Rishad Premji was a vocal opponent, claiming to have fired people for taking up side hustles while being employed with the company and ‘working’ from home. Amidst a sea of dissent, Gurnani was one of the first voices who supported moonlighting – only asking his employees to be open about it. He asked them not to cover up the extra work as it would aid their resumes. “If you go by my word, if someone is meeting the efficiency and productivity norms, and he wants to make some extra money as long as he is not committing fraud, he is not doing something against the values and ethics of his company, I have no problem. I would like to make it a policy. So, if you want to do it, cheers to that, but be open about it," Gurnani had said. ‘People were not toxic’ Such out-of-the-box thinking and policies are not new for Gurnani. After the shocking Satyam scam, where its founder admitted to falsifying accounts, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra bought the company and brought Gurnani to run it. Almost all the employees of the beleaguered company had turned persona non grata. However, he said, “The company’s accounting books were toxic, the people were not.” Amidst dealing with legal and regulatory issues, he did roadshows lasting many months to convince clients to stay with the company. However, as the immediate task was to improve profitability of the company, he had to do what he dreaded — fire around 18,000 people. The firing was not done at one go however. The company gave a small salary for six months, set up job fairs, trained them and even had psychiatrists to help tide over the crisis – until they found another job. As with moonlighting and the Satyam restructuring, Gurnani brings his unique perspective to artificial intelligence (AI) as well. The chemical engineer from NIT Rourkela isn’t worried about AI taking over human jobs – he believes it will give humans more leeway to create emotional connections and relationships, and of course bring in more creativity to work and life.

In exchange, people get to beat the heat in comfortable, air-conditioned seats and perhaps even enjoy some of those trailers. This is the multiplex chain’s bid to woo back the moviegoers who have shunned the big screens since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out and “re-ignite their love for watching entertainment on the big screen”. The chain will also be hoping these shows translate into a boost in advance bookings for movies releasing in the crucial summer season. Salman Khan-starrer Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vikram’s Ponniyin Selvan: Part-2, and Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan are among the movies lined up for release in May and June. The trailers will be curated by PVR Inox and will include upcoming Bollywood, Hollywood and other regional movies as well, customised based on the region. If all this sounds familiar, it’s because PVR Inox has borrowed a leaf out of the booklet of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies like Nestle India, ITC, Kellogg’s and others, which have long used samples as a way to attract new customers by giving them a taste of their new products. For instance, FMCG companies have targeted kids by partnering with schools to give out free samples of Kellogg’s Chocos, Horlicks, Boost, Bournvita or Sunfeast’s Timepass biscuits or atta noodles. These companies also often give out free samples to visitors in shopping malls. The trailer screening show is PVR Inox’s bid to bring sampling to the big screens, especially after reporting a 15% decline in footfalls in the first nine months of FY23. With a total of 1,680 screens, it is India’s largest multiplex chain with presence in 115 cities in India and Sri Lanka. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Dwindling footfalls" comment="subhead" text="Dwindling footfalls">Dwindling footfalls</cmsannotation> Dwindling footfalls have worried both single-screen and multiplex chains alike post the Covid-19 pandemic. According to media consulting firm Ormax, Hindi cinema footfalls fell from 341 million in 2019 to a meagre 189 million in 2022. Only two Bollywood movies have managed to break the ₹100 crore collection mark in the March quarter. “In our view, the innovation is interesting and would help address low footfalls, particularly witnessed in case of Hindi movies,” Nuvama Institutional Equities said in a note, adding that it could also help boost advance bookings for upcoming movies. For starters, the trailer screening show is available in multiple cities across the country, and PVR Inox says there will be two shows per day. According to Nuvama, 35,000 tickets were sold across the country over the last weekend. Our initial checks in Mumbai suggest that a large number of seats are vacant today (Friday). It will be interesting to see if PVR Inox’s experiment gathers momentum, especially when people can freely watch trailers on their smartphones or TVs from the comfort of their home. Indian technology sector growth is set to slow down to 8.4 per cent to USD 245 billion in FY23, <keyword id="6372077" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nasscom" source="Orion">Nasscom</keyword> said on Wednesday. The industry had grown at 15.5 per cent - its best in a decade - to USD 226 billion in FY22 as the changes brought about by the Covid pandemic made technology spending a necessity for clients. However, as the Russian aggression against Ukraine rages on posing geopolitical challenges and stoking inflation which has led to rate hikes the world over, the tech sector seems to be bracing for choppy times. A survey of chief executives by Nasscom has revealed that chief executives are "cautiously optimistic" about the future, and the industry lobby also declined to share its target for FY24. The body's president <keyword id="875687" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="debjani-ghosh" source="Orion">Debjani Ghosh</keyword> said the geopolitical worries are leading to delays in decision-making at companies to award IT contracts and there is also a demand contraction in some markets. She also said that there is a slew of tailwinds working for the industry, like a strong demand with the top-5 companies reporting a deal pipeline of USD 18 billion, a 10 per cent growth in overall client base reported by select tech companies and companies' ability to increase utilisation by 6-7 per cent, which will help profits. On the headwinds front, <keyword id="4757" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ghosh" source="Orion">Ghosh</keyword> flagged an "employability gap" that has its roots in the education system, where the industry is not getting fresh graduates with the right skill sets and has to invest a lot of resources to make them ready to serve client needs. The overall headcount is set to increase by 2.90 lakh during the fiscal year which will be ending on March 31 to take the sector's overall base to 54 lakh people. The increase in employees is lower than the 4.5 lakh jobs added in FY22, but <keyword id="2644831" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="krishnan-ramanujam" source="Orion">Krishnan Ramanujam</keyword> of the largest IT player TCS, who is the current chairman of the body, said the last two years were an exception and the addition is higher than the pre-Covid period. Ghosh said that generative artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT's impact on jobs will be limited to doing away with routine work done by employees, but stressed that AI will be a creator of jobs. She also said that while the larger debate is centred around the impact on jobs, sufficient attention also needs to be paid to using AI responsibly and added that Nasscom runs a centre on ethical AI. Ghosh also exhorted jurisdictions to regulate the end use of technologies rather than technologies itself in order to promote innovation. The Indian IT exports are set to grow by 9.4 per cent to USD 194 billion on a reported currency basis, and would have grown by 11.4 per cent if not for the currency impact, Nasscom said. India presently takes care of 57-58 per cent of the global sourcing requirements and the tech sector is all set to be USD 500 billion in size by 2030, Nasscom said. The domestic revenues are set to jump by a surprising 13 per cent to Rs 4.12 lakh crore on continued investments by government and local governments enterprises, Ghosh said. On the talent side, Nasscom said 36 per cent of the 54 lakh employees are trained in digital skills. Attrition - which had turned into a big trouble for the sector in the recent past because of the high demand for talent on the back of handsome revenue growth - has softened to 21.8 per cent as of December quarter as against 25.7 per cent at the end of June quarter, Nasscom said. The 2.90 lakh new hires in FY23 will include 1.40 lakh women, Nasscom said, adding that of the 54 lakh workers, 20 lakh are women.
