<ul class="summary-list"><li>Archaeologists discovered the skeleton of a Roman man who was fleeing the eruption of Mount <keyword id="12669749" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vesuvius" source="Orion">Vesuvius</keyword> in 79 AD.</li><li>Scientists believe the man was possibly trying to get on a rescue ship.</li></ul><p>Archaeologists discovered the skeletal remains of a man killed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, offering new insights into one of the most famous volcanic eruptions in history.</p><p>The man, who researchers believe was between 40 and 45 years old, was killed just steps from the sea in the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum as he tried to escape, Italian news agency <a href="https://www.ansa.it/english/news/2021/10/15/sensational-fugitive-skeleton-found-at-herculaneum_9dc02abd-c1c3-4477-b2f4-7b46c64ce928.html">ANSA</a> said.</p><p>He was carrying with a wooden box containing a ring, which could have been his most prized possession, <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/last-fugitive-boiled-alive-vain-attempt-flee-vesuvius-79ad-762d3q93z">The Times</a> said.</p><p>The eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago destroyed several major Roman cities, including Pompeii and Herculaneum.</p><p>The remains were discovered during excavations in October, and archaeologists released several images for the first time on Wednesday.</p><div type="image" title="The skeleton of a male victim just found during a new excavation campaign in the Herculaneum archaeological area, the town buried with the nearly Pompeii by the eruption of Vesuvius volcano on 79 AD." height="2333" width="3500" msid="88091367" hostid="261"></div><p>"The last moments here were instantaneous but terrible," Francesco Sirano, the site director, told ANSA. </p><p>"It was 1 a.m. when the pyroclastic surge produced by the volcano reached the town for the first time with a temperature of 300-400 degrees, or even, according to some studies, 500-700 degrees."</p><p>"A white-hot cloud that raced towards the sea at a speed of 100km [60 miles] per hour, which was so dense that it had no oxygen in it," he added.</p><p>The man's bones were stained red from blood, Sirano told the outlet, because of combustion caused by the flow of magma, ash, and gas.</p><p>"They would have burnt off all his clothing and vaporized his flesh. Death would have been instantaneous," said Pierpaolo Petrone, an anthropologist and archeologist, <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2021/12/02/last-fugitive-ancient-skeleton-sheds-light-roman-vapourised/">reported The Telegraph.</a></p><p>The remains were surrounded by heavy carbonized wood, including a roof beam that could have crushed his skull, ANSA reported.</p><p>Unusually, the skeleton was facing upwards, suggesting that he had turned to face the onrushing cloud of hot gas and volcanic matter.</p><p>"Most of the people we've found here at Herculaneum were face down, but maybe he was trying to reach a boat and turned because he heard the roar of the cloud racing towards him at 100km/h," Sirano said, according to <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/last-fugitive-boiled-alive-vain-attempt-flee-vesuvius-79ad-762d3q93z">The Times.</a></p><p>The remains were found in an area where 300 people were unearthed in fishermen's shelters in the 1980s, likely awaiting a possible rescue by the fleet of Pliny the Elder, ANSA said.</p><p>Researchers are now puzzling over the man's identity and wondering why he was not sheltering with the others. Sirano suggested he could have been a rescuer or soldier helping people escape to the sea. </p><p>Alternatively, he could have been a fugitive who left the group to try and get on a rescue ship.</p><p>Some experts have suggested he was not a rich man, evidenced by the ring he was carrying.</p><p>"The ring is reddish, meaning iron, but there is something green inside the box which could be bronze," Ivan Varriale, an archaeologist, told The Times. </p><p>"The box looks like it was used to keep change, and if that's all he was carrying, he may not have been rich."</p><p>Traces of fabric in the stone indicated that the wooden box was once stored in a bag.</p><p>Thousands of years ago, Herculaneum was a seaside town favored by wealthy Romans. The ancient town now lies beneath the modern Italian city of Ercolano.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Miners have discovered a 30,000 year old mummified baby woolly <keyword id="12602542" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mammoth" source="Orion">mammoth</keyword> in <keyword id="14295094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="yukon" source="Orion">Yukon</keyword>, <keyword id="6356687" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="canada" source="Orion">Canada</keyword>. </li><li>It is the most complete mammoth discovered in North America. </li></ul><p>A gold miner found a mummified baby woolly mammoth in the Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin Traditional Territory in Yukon, Canada. </p><p>According to a <a href="https://yukon.ca/en/news/mummified-baby-woolly-mammoth-found-gold-miner-klondike">press release</a> from the local government, the female baby mammoth has been named Nun cho ga by the First Nation Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in elders, which translates to "big baby animal" in the Hän language. </p><p>Nun cho ga is the most complete mummified mammoth discovered in North America.</p><p>Nun cho ga died and was frozen in permafrost during the ice age, over 30,000 years old, said the press release. She would have roamed the Yukon alongside wild horses, cave lions, and giant steppe bison.  </p><p>The frozen mammoth was recovered by geologists after <a href="https://stockhouse.com/companies/bullboard/hrtff/harte-gold-corp?postid=34781919">a young miner in the Klondike gold fields</a> found the remains while digging up muck.</p><p>Dr. Grant Zazula, the Yukon government's paleontologist, said the miner had made the "most important discovery in paleontology in North America,"<a href="https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/news/article/frozen-baby-woolly-mammoth-discovered-in-yukon-gold-fields">reported The Weather Channel.</a></p><p>The baby mammoth was probably with her mother when it but ventured off a little too far and got stuck in the mud, Zazula told The Weather Channel.</p><p>Professor Dan Shugar, from the University of Calgary, part of the team who excavated the woolly mammoth, said that this discovery was the "most exciting scientific thing I have ever been part of."</p><p>He described how immaculately the mammoth had been preserved, saying that it still had intact toenails, hide, hair, trunk, and even intestines, with its last meal of grass still present. </p><p>According to the press release, Yukon is renowned for its store of ice age fossils, but rarely are such immaculate and well-preserved finds discovered. Zazula wrote in the press release that "As an ice age paleontologist, it has been one of my lifelong dreams to come face to face with a real woolly mammoth.</p><p>"That dream came true today. Nun cho ga is beautiful and one of the most incredible mummified ice age animals ever discovered in the world."</p><p><a href="https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/animals/prehistoric/facts/woolly-mammoth">The woolly mammoth, about the size of the African elephant</a>, roamed the earth until about 4,000 years ago. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolly_mammoth">Early humans, hunted them</a> for food and used mammoth bones and tusks for art, tools, and dwellings. A near-perfect 30,000-year-old baby woolly mammoth discovered in Yukon's Klondike gold fields

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A cave house has been uncovered in <keyword id="6355981" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="england">England</keyword>, thought to have housed an exiled king .</li><li>The building was thought to be a party destination for the 18th-century elite, but a much older <keyword id="29052" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="history">history</keyword> is unfolding.</li><li>These finds are by archaeologists from the Royal Agricultural University and Wessex University. </li></ul><p>An ancient cave house beside a river has been revealed to be the home of a deposed English king who became a hermit in the East Midlands of medieval England. </p><p>For a long time, the caves in Foremark and Ingleby in South Derbyshire were considered to be a folly dating back to the 18th century, when the building was used for parties by the English upper classes.</p><p>But a new study has uncovered that they are far more likely to be dated back to the 9th century Dark Ages. </p><p>Edmund Simons, principal investigator of the project and a research fellow at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU), said in a press release: "This makes it probably the oldest intact domestic interior in the UK - with doors, floor, roof, windows etc - and, what's more, it may well have been lived in by a king who became a saint."</p><p>Local legends link the caves to Saint Hardulph -  a fragment of a 16th-century book states that at 'that time Saint Hardulph has a cell in a cliff a little from the Trent' and local folklore identifies these caves as those occupied by Hardulph, also known as Eardwulf the king of Northumbria from 796 to 806.</p><p>The new study strongly links the saint - who was sent into exile after he was defeated in battle and removed from the throne - to the ancient cave house.</p><p>"The architectural similarities with Saxon buildings, and the documented association with Hardulph/Eardwulf, make a convincing case that these caves were constructed, or enlarged, to house the exiled king," said Simons.</p><div type="image" title="Picture of 8th century cave uncovered to be the hide out of an exiled king" height="1003" width="1338" msid="84526345" hostid="261"></div><p>"It was not unusual for deposed or retired royalty to take up a religious life during this period, gaining sanctity and in some cases canonization. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A council hired a team of archeologists in <keyword id="12102399" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wales" source="Orion">Wales</keyword> to assess a road before it was repaired. </li><li>They ended up finding a trove of artifacts and graves dating back thousands of years. </li></ul><p>Archaeologists in the United Kingdom have uncovered a Roman-era mercenary buried with his sword and a mysterious beheaded skeleton.</p><p>The Vale of Glamorgan council in Wales hired rubicon Heritage Services to assess a road they wanted to be straightened. </p><p>It led to the <keyword id="6421627" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="discovery" source="Orion">discovery</keyword> of an extensive trove of archaeological artifacts and hundreds of graves dating back thousands of years.</p><h2>Roman skeletons </h2><p>In one section of the five-mile road was a collection of Roman artifacts and several skeletons, Mark Collard, the managing director of Rubicon Heritage who is leading the project, told Insider.</p><p>One is believed to be a mercenary, buried with a large sword and a military broach, dated to the period that the "Roman Empire fell apart in Britain," Collard said. </p><div type="image" title="One of the team in Barry, Wales uncovering a Roman-era skeleton" height="3120" width="4160" msid="91055475" hostid="261"></div><p>Nearby was another skeleton of a decapitated man, buried with his head by his feet. </p><p>In 2019, in a Roman graveyard in Suffolk, England, archaeologists found the same corpse configuration in 17 decapitated skeletons whose heads had been removed after death, it's believed.</p><p>The find left "archaeologists scratching their heads," <a href="https://www.livescience.com/64462-decapitated-skeletons-roman-cemetery.html">reported Live Science.</a></p><p>It remains a mystery what the practice symbolized. One theory suggests a link to a pagan belief system of pre-Roman Celtic tribes who considered the head was the container for the soul, archaeologists told Live <keyword id="11896083" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="science" source="Orion">Science</keyword>.</p><p>Both men in Wales were buried on a large hill with "fantastic views over the countryside. You have to think there must be a reason for that," Collard told Insider. </p><h2>An ancient burial site </h2><div type="image" title="A skeleton from the medieval burial ground" height="2346" width="3120" msid="91055476" hostid="261"></div><p>Collard said that another excavated section of the road revealed a burial site from a later period that also raised many questions.</p><p>In the middle of a field lies a once-hidden medieval burial ground, uncovered by Collard and his team, that holds 450 bodies. </p><p>People returned to the burial ground for roughly 500 years — from the sixth to the thirteenth century — to bury their loved ones there. "It's unusual that they're buried effectively in the middle of a field. It's not near a church. And that's one of the things we're puzzling about why people would go back for so long to bury people at the top of this mound," said Collard.</p><p>The team is undertaking a detailed analysis of the remain, checking for family links to the bodies, signs of diseases or injuries, or clues about diets. </p><div type="image" title="Osteoarcheaological analysis underway in the lab" height="1137" width="1512" msid="91055478" hostid="261"></div><p>The team behind the excavation has <a href="https://www.rubiconheritage.com/uploads/2/3/6/6/23664026/guide_to_the_excavations_at_five_mile_lane.pdf">released an e-book</a> detailing the project called the "Five Mile Lane," which describes what has been found so far, including Bronze Age cremations, an arrowhead, and a 3000-year-old roundhouse.</p><p>The detailed findings will be published at the end of 2022.</p><p>"Archaeologists always say, we didn't expect to find this much, and in this case, we really didn't, because the preceding surveys didn't raise many hopes. But it has proved to be an incredibly densely occupied prehistoric, Roman, and later, landscape with lots of activity from 4000 BC to the Second World War," Collard said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A man taking a lockdown walk on his father's farm stumbled across a rare Roman mosaic.</li><li>The 828 square foot mosaic artwork depicts scenes from Homer's 'The Iliad,' the ancient Greek epic poem.</li></ul><p>A Roman villa complex containing a rare mosaic depicting scenes from Homer's Iliad has been unearthed in a farmer's field in <keyword id="11903129" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="england" source="Orion">England</keyword>.</p><p>The 828 square foot mosaic, discovered in the county of Rutland, is the first of its kind to be found in Britain.</p><p>The remarkable discovery was made by Jim Irvine, 42, when he found pottery shards on his father's farm while taking a stroll during the UK's first lockdown in 2020.</p><p>"I noticed these bits of pottery, oyster shells, and what I now know to be orange Roman roof tiles," Irvine told <a href="https://inews.co.uk/news/extraordinary-roman-mosaic-depicting-scenes-from-homers-iliad-found-rutland-farmers-field-1317461">the i newspaper. </a></p><p>"I knew that they had no business being there, so when I got home, I had a look at the field on Google Earth and noticed a crop mark we'd never noticed before."</p><div type="image" title="A member of the team from ULAS/University of Leicester during the excavations of a mosaic pavement." height="3508" width="2692" msid="87950381" hostid="261"></div><p>After becoming interested in what lay beneath the field, Irvine bought a spade and began digging. He came across the red hat of King Priam, a character from Homer's 2,800-year-old epic poem about the Trojan War, depicted in the mosaic.</p><p>"Because of the crop mark, I knew there would be something to find. I never expected in a million years to come across a mosaic, especially one as special as this," Irvine told the i.</p><p>After discovering the mosaic, Irvine alerted local authorities.</p><p>Archaeologists from the University of Leicester excavated the site with heritage watchdog Historic England and Rutland county council.</p><p>Researchers at the <a href="https://le.ac.uk/news/2021/november/rutland-mosaic">University of Leicester</a> found that the mosaic was part of an elaborate villa complex, which held several other buildings.</p><p>The team said a wealthy Roman with a knowledge of classic literature probably lived in the villa between the 3rd and 4th century AD.</p><p>The artwork forms the floor of what appears to be a large dining or entertaining area, researchers said and depicted scenes of the story of the Greek hero Achilles. </p><div type="image" title="The bottom panel of the mosaic. Achilles (left) and Hector duelling on chariots." height="665" width="1513" msid="87950382" hostid="261"></div><p>They added that while mosaics were commonly featured in buildings across the <keyword id="12175404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="roman-empire" source="Orion">Roman Empire</keyword>, the Rutland mosaic is unique in that it features Achilles and his battle with Hector in the Trojan War.</p><p>"This is certainly the most exciting Roman mosaic discovery in the UK in the last century," John Thomas, deputy director of the University of Leicester Archaeological Services and project manager on the excavations, said.</p><p>"It gives us fresh perspectives on the attitudes of people at the time, their links to classical literature, and it also tells us an enormous amount about the individual who commissioned this piece."</p><p>"This is someone with a knowledge of the classics, who had the money to commission a piece of such detail, and it's the very first depiction of these stories that we've ever found in Britain."</p><p>The site has been officially protected as a scheduled monument by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS), and further excavations are planned for 2022.</p><p>Richard Clark, County Archaeologist for Leicestershire and Rutland, said, "This has been the most extraordinary of discoveries, and for that, full tribute must be paid to Jim and his family for their prompt and responsible actions."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Two nearly perfectly preserved <keyword id="158630" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="ice-age">Ice Age</keyword> <keyword id="6370207" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lion">lion</keyword> cubs were found in <keyword id="6358826" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword>, still with whiskers and fur.</li><li>Scientists say the cubs, nicknamed Sparta and Boris, lived around<strong> 28,000 and 43,000 years ago.</strong></li><li>Researchers said Sparta was probably the best preserved Ice Age animal ever found.</li></ul><p>Scientists have found two nearly perfectly preserved cave lion cubs from the Ice Age, nicknamed Boris and Sparta, in east Russia.</p><p>Only four ancient cave lion cubs have ever been found, and scientists say these two are the best-preserved ones.</p><p>"Sparta is probably the best-preserved Ice Age animal ever found, and is more or less undamaged apart from the fur being a bit ruffled," Love Dalen, a professor in Evolutionary Genetics and author of a new study on the cubs, told CNN. </p><p>"She even had the whiskers preserved. Boris is a bit more damaged, but still pretty good."</p><p>Cave lions, known as panthera spelaea, roamed Eurasia during the Ice Age before going extinct over 10,000 years ago.</p><p>Boris and Sparta were found in 2017 and 2018 within 15 meters (49 feet) of each other on the banks of the Semyuelyakh river by mammoth tusk hunters.</p><p>Although they were initially thought to be related, new research has revealed that the cubs were around 15,000 years apart in age.</p><p>Using radiocarbon dating scientists determined that the male cub Boris is around 43,448 years old, while the female cub Sparta is 27,962 years old, according to the study published in <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2571-550X/4/3/24/htm">Quaternary</a>.</p><p>Both animals were around one or two months old when they died, according to the study. While their cause of death is unclear, researchers said there was no evidence to suggest a predator had killed them.</p><p>"Given their preservation, they must have been buried very quickly. So maybe they died in a mudslide, or fell into a crack in the permafrost," Dalen told CNN. "Permafrost forms large cracks due to seasonal thawing and freezing."</p><p>The cubs' coats were similar but not identical to that of an African lion cub, and Sparta had a more dull, greyish coat compared to Boris, according to the team.</p><p>"The general tone of the color of the fur coat of Sparta is greyish to light brown, whereas, in Boris, the fur is generally lighter, greyish yellowish," they said.</p><p>"It is, therefore, possible that light coloration prevailed with age in cave lions and was adaptive for northern snow-covered landscapes."</p>
