The report stated that the <keyword id="20861069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-shift" source="keywords">global shift</keyword> towards a China+1 strategy and the impact of the <keyword id="20016971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia-Ukraine-war" source="keywords">Russia-Ukraine war</keyword> offer India additional opportunities to fill supply chain gaps, potentially boosting its share in the <keyword id="23046732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-defence-industry" source="keywords">global defence industry</keyword>. The report noted that the country's long-term goal is to become a global defence manufacturing hub is driven by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private enterprises, start-ups, and MSMEs. "Indian defence exports have grown multi-fold from INR 15 bn in 2017 to INR 210 bn in 2024 at a CAGR of 46%. The China + 1 strategy and the Russia-Ukraine war provides an additional opportunity for India to fill the gap created in the supply chain and hence increase its contribution to the global defence industry," the report read. The report added that to achieve this target a well-developed domestic ecosystem is crucial as lower import content in products accelerates approvals by reducing international conflicts. The report added that the Ministry of Defence has taken key initiatives to attract Indian private players and global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) include establishing aerospace parks and defence corridors, fast-tracking project approvals, and enhancing development and testing facilities. Highlighting the potential in India's Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) segment the report explained that it holds a significant potential for global aerospace companies due to its technical expertise and cost-competitive solutions. "India provides a huge opportunity in the <keyword id="23046733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MRO-segment" source="keywords">MRO segment</keyword> for global aerospace leaders given the expertise the country provides as well as the cost efficiency solutions compared to its global competitors" the report added. India aims to increase domestic defence turnover to Rs 3 lac crore by 2029, Rs 500 billion targeted for exports. This growth will help reduce the Government of India's import bill as India remains the world's largest importer of defence equipment. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative of the government, 75 per cent of the defence capital outlay is now reserved for domestic players, up from 49 per cent in FY21. Given the geopolitical challenges and modernisation needs of its Armed Forces, the report added that India plans to invest Rs 8.3 lac crore in domestic procurement, offering substantial business opportunities for local companies. "India intends to place orders worth INR 8.3 trn through domestic procurement and thus it presents a massive business opportunity for local players" it added. As per the Ministry of Defence, India's defence manufacturing sector has witnessed an increase of 16.8 per cent in the fiscal year 2023-24. This significant increase marks the highest-ever growth in the country's defence production value. The total value of defence production reached Rs 1,26,887 crore this year, up from the previous year's figures.

In her Budget speech, Sitharaman proposed an exemption on customs duty on certain <keyword id="22516435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer-medicines" source="keywords">cancer medicines</keyword> and a reduction in duties on <keyword id="19920958" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phone" source="keywords">mobile phone</keyword> parts and chargers, aimed at bringing down their prices in the retail market. "With a three-fold increase in domestic production and almost 100-fold jump in exports of mobile phones over the last six years, the Indian mobile phone industry has matured. In the interest of consumers, I now propose to reduce the BCD on mobile phone, mobile PCBA and mobile charger to 15 per cent," said Sitharaman in her Budget speech that lasted around 90 minutes. To provide relief to cancer patients, she proposed to fully exempt three more medicines from customs duties. Imported <keyword id="19895579" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold" source="keywords">gold</keyword>, silver, leather goods and seafood will also get cheaper, as duties were invariably lowered on them. Duty cut on gold would boost retail demand and help in curtailing smuggling in the world's second-biggest bullion market. "To enhance domestic value addition in gold and precious metal jewellery in the country, I propose to reduce customs duties on gold and silver to 6 per cent and that on platinum to 6.4 per cent." She also proposed changes in the customs duty on X-ray tubes and flat panel detectors for use in medical X-ray machines under the <keyword id="20330318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phased-manufacturing-programme" source="keywords">Phased Manufacturing Programme</keyword>, so as to synchronise them with domestic capacity addition. Also, she proposed to fully exempt customs duties on 25 critical minerals and reduce basic customs duty on two of them. Minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt and rare earth elements are critical for sectors like nuclear energy, renewable energy, space, defence, telecommunications, and high-tech electronics, said the finance minister. "This will provide a major fillip to the processing and refining of such minerals and help secure their availability for these strategic and important sectors," Sitharaman said. Putting energy transition on focus, as it is critical in the fight against climate change, the finance minister proposed to expand the list of exempted capital goods for use in the manufacture of solar cells and panels in the country. However, in view of sufficient domestic manufacturing capacity of solar glass and tinned copper interconnect, it was proposed not to extend the exemption of customs duties provided to them. To enhance competitiveness in marine products, the reduced duty on certain broodstock, polychaete worms, shrimp and fish feed to 5 per cent, besides exempting customs duty on various inputs for manufacture of shrimp and fish feed. Moving on to leather and textile, reduction in duty was announced for various items. "...to enhance the competitiveness of exports in the leather and textile sectors, I propose to reduce BCD on real down filling material from duck or goose," Sitharaman said. To reduce cost of production of steel and copper, two important raw materials, it was proposed to remove the customs duty on ferro nickel and blister copper. "I am also continuing with nil BCD (customs duty) on ferrous scrap and nickel cathode and concessional BCD of 2.5 per cent on copper scrap." On the flip side, to support chemicals and petrochemicals, an increase in duty was proposed. To support existing and new capacities in the pipeline, an increase in duty on ammonium nitrate from 7.5 to 10 per cent would be applicable. PVC flex banners are non-biodegradable and hazardous for environment and health. To curb their imports, a propose was made to raise the duty on them from 10 to 25 per cent. To incentivise domestic telecommunication equipment manufacturing, a propose to increase the duty from 10 to 15 per cent on PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) of specified telecom equipment was made. Explaining her rational behind the indirect taxes tweak, Sitharaman said her proposals for customs duties intend to support domestic manufacturing, deepen local value addition, promote export competitiveness, and simplify taxation, while keeping the interest of the general public and consumers surmount. In Budget 2022-23 too, the government reduced the number of customs duty rates.

Without divulging specific details, the envoy said French and Indian companies are working together on "equipment of the future", platforms and engines. "I do not think any country provides India with the same level of technology. The progress is also due to the fact that we recognise that India wants to boost its strategic autonomy, wants to build its industrial base and we want to be India's best partner in this move," he told PTI. Indo-French strategic ties have been on a major upswing after India inked an inter-governmental agreement with France in September 2016 for the procurement of 36 Rafale jets at a cost of around Rs 59,000 crore. "Defence has always been a very strong component of our cooperation because there is a lot of trust between our two countries. When you want to work on these issues, you need trust because you commit yourself for 10, 20, 30 years," Lenain said. "This trust is the main asset that we have. Defence cooperation has been developing very well because we are very comfortable with India and we have decided that we could share our best technology, state-of-the-art equipment, best-in-class technology," he said. The two sides are now looking at further bolstering the strategic partnership in view of the evolving global geo-political landscape triggered by the crisis in Ukraine and developments in the Indo-Pacific region. "From the beginning, we were the best partners in the Make-in-India policy. Now that India is switching to the Atma Nirbhar policy, we are also there for India," Lenain said. He said France is ready to co-develop equipment with India and share know-how. "Our companies are working together on the equipment of the future, on engines, on different sorts of equipment. It is very positive for both industries," he said. Lenain chose not to give a direct reply when asked about the possibility of the Indian Air Force procuring additional Rafales and whether France was also looking at supplying the naval version of the jet to the Indian Navy. "We are talking, and again, we are very much willing to provide state-of-the-art equipment. Everything is on the table and we do our best," he said. French aerospace major Safran has already set the ball rolling to set up its biggest maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in Hyderabad with an investment of around USD 305 million. In 2017, India unveiled the ambitious strategic partnership (SP) model to facilitate joint ventures between select private Indian firms and foreign defence majors to build military platforms like submarines and fighter jets in India. The SP model aims to create a vibrant defence manufacturing ecosystem in the country through joint ventures between Indian corporates and global defence majors. The government has initiated a series of measures in the last few years to boost domestic defence manufacturing. In March, the defence ministry said it plans to procure military equipment worth Rs five lakh crore from the domestic industries in the next five to seven years in line with its policy of promoting indigenous defence manufacturing. India has been one of the largest importers of arms globally. According to estimates, the Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion (one billion is equal to 100 crores) in capital procurement in the next five years. The government now wants to reduce dependence on imported military platforms and has decided to support domestic defence manufacturing. The defence ministry has set a goal of a turnover of USD 25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in defence manufacturing in the next five years, including an export target of USD 5 billion worth of military hardware. 68% of defence budget allocated for procuring indigenous equipment: PM

India is preparing country-wise profiles of defence products and platforms to promote their exports and the government will stand "side by side" with the domestic industry in this endeavour through diplomatic channels, a senior Defence Ministry official said Monday. Raj Kumar, secretary, Department of Defence Production, said at a webinar that the domestic defence industry will hold web interactions with the representatives of friendly countries to figure out what kind of products and platforms they require. "We are preparing country-wise profiles of products, weapons and platforms which are probably needed by our friendly countries. So we are now planning to start web interaction led by the industry," Kumar said. "That country's defence attache, our DPSUs (defence public sector undertakings), industry, will then figure out what is in the store for us to promote there for exports," he said. Kumar said the government will be standing side by side with the domestic industry through its defence attaches, embassies and diplomatic channels to promote exports. To promote indigenous production, the Defence Ministry on August 9 announced restrictions on import of 101 weapons and military platforms including light combat helicopters, conventional submarines and cruise missiles under a staggered timeline till 2024. Kumar said a second list of import-restricted defence items will be notified soon. "This is the first list we are examining and then a second list will also come. We expect you (industry) to come forward and start investing to meet our requirements," he said at the webinar -- "Army Make Projects 2020" -- organised by FICCI. The senior official said as successful domestic bidders move to the defence equipment production stage, his department will share their details with the UP and Tamil Nadu defence corridor authorities, who "will compete in attracting your units to their respective states". He said since the three services are making efforts to push the "Make II" category of defence production projects, he will interact with project participants to understand their concerns and share best practices among the services. As secretary of the Department of Defence Production, Kumar heads the collegiate committee that approves the "Make II" category of projects. Under the Make II category, no government funding is given to the Indian company for the prototype development process. If a prototype developed by the company meets the standards set by the armed forces, an order is placed for such equipment or platforms. "Everything, whether it is defence industrial corridor, or whether it is defence production and export promotion policy, or whether it is a negative list - everything works in the same direction that we have to be among the top producers of defence items," he said. On August 9, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the ministry was now ready for a "big push" to indigenous defence manufacturing in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for an "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India). After import embargo, India is creating country profiles for its defence exports

The <keyword id="32723" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="defence" source="Orion">defence</keyword> ministry has approved a fresh list of 928 components and subsystems which will only be procured from the domestic industry after a ban on their import kicks in under a staggered time-line of around five-and-half years. The ministry on Sunday said the aim of the move is in sync with the government's overall aim to promote 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in defence production. It is the fourth such "positive indigenisation list (PIL)" comprising line replacement units, sub-systems and components used for various military platforms, equipment and weapons. "To promote 'Aatmanirbharta' in defence and minimise imports by defence public sector undertakings, the <keyword id="6369097" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-defence" source="Orion">Ministry of Defence</keyword> has approved fourth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 strategically-important line replacement units/sub-systems/spares and components, including high-end materials and spares, with import substitution value worth Rs 715 crore," the ministry said in a statement. The aim of the indigenisation list is also to minimise imports by the defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs). The defence ministry has set specific timelines for import ban of the items, spanning the period from December 2023 to December 2028. This list is in continuation to the three similar PILs that were brought out in December 2021, March 2022 and August 2022 "These lists contain 2,500 items which are already indigenised and 1,238 (351+107+780) items which will be indigenised within the given timelines," the ministry said. Of the 1,238, 310 items have been indigenised so far, it said. The items which were already indigenised comprised 262 from the first PIL, 11 from the second list and 37 from the third PIL, according to the ministry. "The DPSUs will undertake indigenisation of these items through different routes under 'Make' category and in-house development through the capabilities of MSMEs and private Indian industry, thereby providing impetus to the growth in economy, enhanced investment in defence and reduction in import dependence of DPSUs," the ministry said. "In addition, this will augment the design capabilities of the domestic defence industry by involving academia and research institutions," it said. Govt approves 4th 'positive indigenisation list' of sub-systems to promote domestic defence industry

New Delhi [<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>], February 21 (ANI): President of <keyword id="19915275" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="boeing" source="keywords">Boeing</keyword> India and South Asia, <keyword id="20265370" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="salil-gupte" source="keywords">Salil Gupte</keyword>, hailed the 'Make in India' initiative and said that New Delhi is moving from being one of the largest importers to developing its own platforms. He said that Boeing is one of the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) that has coordinated most with India in this direction. <keyword id="20666703" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gupte" source="keywords">Gupte</keyword> said that a lot of discussion at the Indus X event -- which is being held on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue 2024 -- is around co-development and co-production. Speaking to ANI, Salil Gupte said, "Several products for defence, that are in the pipeline for co-development...Boeing has decided to specifically participate in those types of programmes, because in defence, under the 'self-reliance' theme, India is moving from being one of the largest importers of products to developing its own platforms here." "Some of it will be done totally with Indian companies and some of it will do in partnership with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). Boeing has been one of the OEMs that has coordinated most with India," he added. Gupte said that Boeing is exporting worth of Rs 10000 crores per annum as part of 'Make in India' programme. "We have Rs 10000 crores per annum of sourcing that we export from India already as part of our 'Make in India' programme. And now we think that our new engineering centre in Bangalore, it is an opportunity to combine the strong engineering capability with manufacturing capability to give a fillip to the Make in India programme," he said. The Boeing India President further said that he is expecting over 2500 aircraft to come to India over the course of the next 20 years. "In civil aviation, we see over 2500 aircraft that will be coming in India over the next 20 years, which makes it more than 10 aircraft per month. Not just aircraft, but airlines are also growing very rapidly. Akasa Air, one of the fastest-growing airlines in history, is now going international and Air India is placing large orders in the last year as they spread their wings into long-haul flights," Gupte further said. Gupte also reiterated US President <keyword id="19919748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="joe-biden" source="keywords">Joe Biden</keyword>'s remark that the India-US relationship is the "most consequential of the 21st century." India moving from one of largest importers to developing its own platforms: Boeing India Prez Salil Gupte

<ul><li>It is unlikely that the budget allocation to the Armed Forces will increase dramatically this year, according to Sameer Patil, an expert in international security.</li><li>The lion's share of the budget will go towards the Army, leaving the Navy and the Air Force strapped for cash.</li><li>Patil told Business Insider that the Navy and the Air Force are forced to rely on imports since domestic products are usually inferior in quality or do not meet their requirements even though they don't have enough resources to pay for projects that are already underway.</li></ul>Budget allocation for India's Armed Forces always falls short of requirements. Even though the budget increases every year, most of it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/why-india-needs-more-defence-budget/articleshow/70082260.cms">goes toward revenue expenditure</a> to pay salaries and pensions. Even within the entire allocation, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/indian-army-versus-military-spending-on-other-countries/articleshow/73182937.cms">the lion's share goes towards the Army</a> rather than the Navy or the Air Force, which are more technology-intensive. "The government will try and maintain the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/india-defence-expenditure-in-2020/articleshow/72822974.cms">incremental growth</a> which they do every year but it will not be sufficient to meet the requirements of the armed forces — particularly for the Navy and the Airforce, where they're finding it difficult as it is even to make payments for the equipment that they have already started purchasing," said Sameer Patil, a fellow in international security studies at Gateway House — a think-tank based in Mumbai told Business Insider.

 The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/defense/news/indias-budget-allocation-for-defence-has-remained-fairly-static-for-the-past-five-years/articleshow/73153930.cms">shrinking allocation of resources</a> means that a lot of the proposals that have already been cleared by the defence acquisition council are now being strapped. For instance, the Indian Navy was supposed to get four landing platform dock-type ship built in India. So far, it only has one -- the INS Jalashva, which it bought from the US. At the end of the day, they are left with no option but to import weapons and equipment. The domestic defence industry is either still developing products which are already available off-the-shelf abroad or producing products of inferior quality. The question of research and development It's not that domestic firms don't wish to invest in research and development (R&amp;D) but they lack incentives. Last year, the government allocated some funds to the Technology Development Fund. However, the money is insufficient to cover even a single project, according to Patil. In addition to scarce resources, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) discourages private participation. "If the DRDO finds out that the private sector is engaging in any R&amp;D work, they will come and say that we will do the R&amp;D — because we have the experience and the necessary facilities, and we'll give you the final product," explained Patil. The government can't say no Once the DRDO steps in, the government isn't in a position to say no. For example, the Naval Light Combat Aircraft developed by the DRDO and <keyword id="86569" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Aeronautics-Limited">Hindustan Aeronautics Limited</keyword> (HAL) were rejected by the Navy four years ago. The Navy explained that they did not need the new choppers because they had already purchased Apache and Chinook from the US. Nonetheless, HAL is still pursuing the project.

 "Which is why the armed forces are saying that they would prefer imports rather than rely on the DRDO. Because sometimes it's of inferior quality and sometimes it doesn't meet the requirements of the armed forces," said Patil. He feels that the private sector is more efficient and currently in the process of absorbing the requisite skills through joint ventures with American aerospace companies — like the Tatas with Lockheed Martin. However, they are not immediately expected to do so. Although defence indigenisation holds a lot of potential, it will take at least a decade or two to show results.

<keyword id="6354759" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangladesh" source="Orion">Bangladesh</keyword> will soon import defence related items from India under the USD 500 million Line of Credit provided by New Delhi as several identified equipment are being fast tracked, according to Foreign Secretary <keyword id="635703" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="harsh-vardhan-shringla" source="Orion">Harsh Vardhan Shringla</keyword>. His remarks came after President Ram Nath Kovind, who is here on his maiden state visit at the invitation of his counterpart M Abdul Hamid to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan in 1971, held delegation-level talks with the country's top leadership on Wednesday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called on President Kovind and the two leaders discussed several issues of mutual interest and bilateral cooperation. They reviewed the progress in the multifaceted and comprehensive bilateral ties. Addressing a press briefing here on Wednesday night, Shringla said, "As far as we are concerned, India and Bangladesh are bound by ties of history, language, spirituality and culture." He said that the defence issue was discussed during President Kovind's talks with Bangladesh's top leadership. “I think the issue of imports of defence related items by Bangladesh, you are aware that we have signed, we have extended the line of credit for defence items for USD 500 million. Under this line of credit, several items have been identified and being fast tracked. They're in fairly advanced stages of being processed… we will see certain defence items exports from India coming to Bangladesh and this is something that we would like to see,” the foreign secretary said. Sringla said that “essentially the entire gamut of cooperation, whether it is training, exchanges, joint manufacturing in the defence sector, this is something that we would like to see enhanced”. In 2019, India provided USD 500 million Line of Credit to Bangladesh for defence-related procurement in the neighbouring country. Export Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) entered into an agreement on April 11 with Bangladesh's Armed Forces Division for making available to the latter a Government of India-supported LoC of USD 500 million. The LoC is for the purpose of financing defence-related procurement in Bangladesh. In April 2017 during Prime Minister Hasina's visit to New Delhi, India committed USD 500 million LoC for Bangladesh's defence. President Kovind on Wednesday assured the top leadership here that Bangladesh has a "special place" in India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and underlined that the bilateral relationship based on sovereignty, equality, trust and understanding is mature enough to handle the "most complex of problems". Bangladesh to import defence items from India under $500-million LoC

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Submariners have very little space, time, or equipment to exercise, and jumping onboard is banned.</li><li>That may sound familiar to people who workout at home in apartments or small spaces.</li></ul>Trying to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-start-exercising-get-fit-lose-weight-feel-overwhelmed-2022-7">keep fit</a> is hard at the best of times.Trying to keep fit while living on a submarine is another kettle of fish entirely.Submariners in the UK's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/royal-navy-fitness-test-what-is-it-2023-3">Royal Navy</a> are often undersea for weeks at a time, and while large warships can have relatively well-equipped gyms and physical trainers onboard, submarines tend to have little more than a rowing machine or exercise bike and a couple of dumbbells or kettlebells in a four-foot by four-foot space, both a former submariner and one of the Royal Navy's senior physical trainers told Insider.Warrant Officer Paul Todd, who is in charge of physical training for recruits at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall, UK, told Insider on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/royal-navy-basic-training-sailors-fitness-behind-scenes-2023-2">an exclusive visit to the naval base</a> earlier this year that before submariners go out to sea, they are taught how to get a good workout with minimal equipment, in a short space of time, and without jumping. And, ultimately, these are useful skills for anyone who has to workout in a confined space and can't jump, like an apartment or their bedroom.There are multiple reasons why jumping is banned: submarines have low ceilings, plus it could potentially make it wobble and easier to detect. The submarine service is known as the "Silent Service," because the Royal Navy says it operates "unseen, unheard, and undetected."Todd said that submariners simply aren't going to be able to do optimal training for hypertrophy (<a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-exercises-for-building-muscle-in-gym-correct-technique-2020-12">muscle-building</a>) or plyometrics (explosivity) like you could in a regular gym, but they can build at least some muscle and move enough to stay fit and feel good.<h2>Focus on compound exercises </h2>Whether you're on a submarine or just in a small apartment, you can get <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/arnold-schwarzenegger-10-minute-bodyweight-workout-routine-2023-10">a good workout in 20 to 30 minutes</a> with basic equipment (or none at all), Todd said.Submariners tend to do a lot of interval-based workouts such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/fitness/tabata-workout">tabata</a> or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/why-hiit-classes-arent-necessary-to-lose-fat-get-fit-2020-9">HIIT</a>, but make sure to perform full body <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/hiit-style-combination-exercises-not-good-for-muscle-building-trainer-2022-2">compound exercises</a> that tick off the basic movement patterns, Todd said.These are:<ul><li>Hinge (eg. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/fitness/benefits-of-deadlifts">deadlifts</a>)</li><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/fitness/benefits-of-squats">Squats</a></li><li>Push (eg. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/fitness/benefits-of-push-ups">push-ups</a>)</li><li>Pull (eg. bent-over rows)</li></ul>Compound movements, such as squats, lunges, deadlifts, and push-ups, are those that recruit multiple muscles at once, making them an efficient way to train.On the flip-side, submariners avoid isolation exercises such as bicep curls because they only work a small part of the body so aren't efficient when you don't have much time. For this reason, submariners prioritize full-body exercises, Todd said.However, he stresses that there's no one size fits all approach and what's most important — whether you're on a submarine or not — is finding a type of training you enjoy.
