The move, an extension of a Covid-era temporary public policy that was set to expire today, has now been extended by two years, until February 28, 2025. Visitors applying under this public policy who held a work permit within the last 12 months will also continue to be able to request interim work authorization to begin working for their new employer more quickly. Prior to this temporary policy change, those applying to work in Canada would typically need to apply for their initial work permit before they came to Canada. If they were already in Canada with visitor status when they were approved for a work permit, they would need to leave the country to be issued their work permit. With this policy in place, leaving Canada isn't necessary. Those looking to benefit from this temporary public policy must have valid status in Canada as a visitor on the day they apply, and have a job offer that is supported by a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) or an LMIA-exempt offer of employment. An LMIA is an application that an employer makes to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to evaluate if hiring foreign workers will have a positive, neutral or negative impact on the Canadian economy. If ESDC deems the impact is negative, the employer will not be eligible to hire foreign nationals, according to CIC News. Under the policy, applicants must also submit an application for an employer-specific work permit no later than February 28, 2025. IRCC said that continuing this policy makes visitors an option for employers in Canada, many of whom are facing significant labour shortages during a period of economic expansion. There was an overall decrease in the number of vacancies to 848,000 from over one million, according to Statistics Canada data from December 2022. However, key sectors like healthcare, food and social assistance still need more employees to fill in-demand positions.

Visitors can continue applying for work permits inside Canada

Prior to this announcement, spouses were only eligible for a work permit if the principal applicant was working in a high-skill occupation. This temporary measure aims to improve the emotional well-being, physical health and financial stability of workers by keeping families together. As a result, it is expected that the worker will better integrate into their overall work environment and community, according to the press statement released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Starting in January 2023, through a temporary 2-year measure, Canada will expand eligibility to work in Canada to spouses and working-age children through a phased approach for workers at all skill levels. This would include families of workers in health care, trades and hospitality, for example. As a result of this new approach, it is estimated that family members of more than 200,000 foreign workers could begin working in Canada, offering a greater opportunity for both foreign workers seeking to work in Canada and for employers addressing their labour needs. The remarks by Miller came on Sunday as the federal government of Prime Minister <keyword id="1740494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="justin-trudeau" source="Orion">Justin Trudeau</keyword> faced criticism for welcoming an increasing number of immigrants - both permanent and temporary residents - while the country faces an acute housing shortage. In an interview with CTV News, Miller said the federal government will need to have talks with provincial governments "to make sure that the provinces that have not been doing their jobs actually rein in those numbers on a pure volume basis." "That volume is disconcerting," Miller said, in reference to the number of international students in Canada. "It's really a system that has gotten out of control." A cap on international students would not be a "one-size-fits-all solution" to housing shortages across Canada, Miller noted. But he did not reveal the size of the reduction the government is planning on making. India was the first among the top ten origin countries of study permit holders in 2022 in Canada, with a total of 319,000 students. Meanwhile, new reporting by The Canadian Press news agency - citing internal documents obtained through an access to information request - shows the federal government was warned by public servants two years ago that its ambitious immigration targets could jeopardise housing affordability. The Liberals have set targets aiming to bring in 485,000 immigrants this year, and 500,000 in both 2025 and 2026. Temporary residents, largely international students and migrant workers, are another part of the equation, with more than 300,000 of them arriving in Canada in just the third quarter of last year. Miller said he will be looking in both the first and second quarter of this year at possibly setting a cap on international students to help reduce the demand for housing. When asked why the government is only considering a cap now, when the idea of one has been floated for months, Miller said there's a need to sort out numbers on a federal level before looking with "a little more granularity" at what individual academic institutions are doing in different provinces, possibly profiting off bringing in more international students. "We need to be doing our jobs and making sure that we have a system that actually makes sure people have a financial capability to come to Canada, that we're actually verifying offer letters," Miller said. "And now it's time for us to have a conversation about volumes and the impact that that is having in certain areas." When pressed further on the number of international students coming to Canada far outpacing the number of homes the federal government has announced it's planning to help build, Miller also said housing is only part of the calculation when it comes to immigration targets. The pressing need to bring down the average age of the workforce also needs to be taken into consideration, he said. And while he wouldn't give specifics, Miller said a cap on international students is something the federal government is considering, "and will continue to consider." "We have a sense of what those numbers would look like, what the reduction of those numbers looks like, out of courtesy to my colleagues in the provinces, those are discussions that we're first going to have around the negotiating table," he said, adding the financial needs of academic institutions is also a factor.

The country joins the European Union and some state governments in the US in banning TikTok on government devices. Mona Fortier, President of the Treasury Board, announced the ban of the use of the TikTok application on government-issued mobile devices "Effective February 28, 2023, the TikTok application will be removed from government-issued mobile devices. Users of these devices will also be blocked from downloading the application in the future," Fortier said in a statement. Following a review of TikTok, the Chief Information Officer of Canada determined that it presents an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security. "The decision to remove and block TikTok from government mobile devices is being taken as a precaution, particularly given concerns about the legal regime that governs the information collected from mobile devices, and is in line with the approach of our international partners," Fortier explained. On a mobile device, TikTok's data collection methods provide considerable access to the contents of the phone. "While the risks of using this application are clear, we have no evidence at this point that government information has been compromised," said the Canadian government. The European Commission last week directed all employees to remove TikTok from their corporate devices. The suspension also extends to workers' personal devices where they are used for work purposes. The US House of Representatives recently ordered its staff to delete TikTok from official work devices. Managerial or professional workers can visit Canada on short term assignments of 15 days in a six month period or 30 days in a year.

But both the Trans-Canada Railway and VIA Rail offer options to take you from coast to coast, giving people a way to see a large swath of the country. This one's on my bucket list.<h2>Canada has universal healthcare</h2>Contrary to popular rhetoric, healthcare in Canada is not free — <a href="https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/new-immigrants/new-life-canada/health-care-card.html">it's funded through a combination of personal and corporate taxation.</a>But as long as you have your health card, you don't have to pay for the most basic services, including doctor visits, ultrasounds, and hospital stays. That will cost extra.)<h2>For the most part, guns are for hunting</h2>There are plenty of guns in Canada. <a href="https://www.macleans.ca/opinion/gun-violence-isnt-just-a-u-s-problem-and-canada-isnt-immune/">Yes, some of them are used for violent crime</a>, and there aren't numerous strict gun regulations in place, but the culture around guns doesn't seem as fanatic here.For reference, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41488081">per crime data gathered by BBC</a>, 73% of homicides were gun-related in the US in 2017 — and 38% of homicides were gun-related in Canada in 2018. In addition, per a Small Arms Survey conducted in 2018, US civilians own far more guns than Canadian ones. Canada continues to update its gun regulations, too.
