<ul class="summary-list"><li>A new report from the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute finds that <keyword id="72767" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="CEO-pay">CEO pay</keyword> has 'skyrocketed.'</li><li>Since 1978, <keyword id="55739" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="CEO-compensation">CEO compensation</keyword> has grown by 1,322%, with CEOs paid 351 times more than the typical worker.</li><li>But the average worker may now have growing power over wages and employment.</li></ul>Over the past five decades, CEO pay has skyrocketed - but the average wage for workers hasn't. A <a href="https://www.epi.org/232540/pre/94e7c60ad20bb6075e436b015b54d753905e66b28f8e2b2d4d7894fc3b4f29b7/">new report</a> from the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, authored by Lawrence Mishel and Jori Kandra, finds that CEO compensation has grown by 1,322% between 1978 and 2020.In contrast, the report finds that the typical worker saw their compensation grow by just 18% during that time period. As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-wage-growth-decline-decades-gdp-unemployment-hiring-salaries-2021-5">Insider's Ben Winck and Andy Kiersz previously reported</a>, wages have made up less and less of the country's gross domestic product over the past five decades. As the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> grew, wages didn't keep pace.That could also be seen in the discrepancy between CEO and worker pay, which was 351-to-1 in 2020. While the authors note that the CEO to worker compensation ratio peaked in 2000 at 366-to-1, it's still higher than any time from the 1960's through the 1990's. They used a "realized" measure for compensation, which accounts for stock awards when they were vested, and stock options when they were cashed in. Under the "granted" measure, which values compensation plans based on when stock packages were granted, compensation was slightly lower.<keyword id="6411412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="inequality">Inequality</keyword> between CEOs and everyone else even extends to the top. The report also looks at CEO compensation in comparison to the earnings of the top 0.1% of earners. The authors found that CEO compensation was 6.44 times higher than what those in the top 0.1% made in 2019, based on the most recently available tax data from the IRS."The CEOs are in a different stratosphere," Mishel told Insider, adding: "It's not just that the CEOs are so-called highly skilled or highly educated, they've done far better than the average earner who's very highly skilled in the top one-thousandth, or very highly educated."Income and wealth inequality have gotten even more extreme during the pandemic as those at the top pull away from everyone else. A March study from the left-leaning Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF) and the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billionaires-in-america-got-so-much-richer-during-pandemic-2021-3">found that</a> America's billionaires got 44% richer during the pandemic.However, workers are gaining more power over wages and employment conditions in the red-hot labor market as the economy reopens.Millions of workers are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/record-number-workers-quitting-in-third-month-here-to-stay-2021-8">quitting</a> their jobs as wages go up, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/businesses-dont-want-to-fire-anyone-but-workers-still-quitting-2021-8">employers scramble</a> to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/signing-bonuses-labor-shortage-hiring-incentives-new-workers-ziprecruiter-wsj-2021-7">offer more</a> in historically low-paying professions. Of course, millions of workers remain unemployed, and wages in industries like <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/08/08/fifteen-dollar-wage/">elder care</a> are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-grocery-store-workers-now-earn-above-15-on-average-2021-8">still considerably low</a>, but it still marks substantial <keyword id="2372711" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="wage-growth">wage growth</keyword> for America's lowest-paid workforce. Mishel said that he thinks unemployment will continue to drop substantially by the end of 2022. "I think the pressure on employers to improve wages and benefits will continue," Mishel said. He said that Biden administration policies addressing labor standards - like raising the minimum wage and improving collective bargaining - could also contribute to a greater shift. "If those are able to be enacted it'll reinforce a shift in power towards workers, which is something they desperately need - because they've been on the losing end for four decades."

CEOs got paid 351 times what typical workers made in 2020

New Delhi, Credit Card bill payment platform <keyword id="16650447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cred-ceo" source="Orion">CRED CEO</keyword> <keyword id="192201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kunal-shah" source="Orion">Kunal Shah</keyword> has revealed his monthly salary, stating that he takes home Rs 15,000 per months and also gave a reason for it. He held an "Ask Me Anything" session on Instagram on Sunday where a user asked: "Your salary at CRED is so low? How do you survive?" Responding to the question, Shah said: "I don't believe I should get a good salary till the company is profitable. My salary at CRED is Rs 15,000 per month, and I can survive as I sold my company FreeCharge in the past." Moreover, a user on Twitter shared a screenshot of the story in which the CEO responded to the question. "There are CEOs who take salaries in crores, then we have Kunal Shah," the user wrote with the screenshot. Shah's response, on the other hand, appears to have divided the internet. While some applauded his decision, others said that it is simply a method to save tax. "Being humble and flexing in the same sentence. His words always poke me to be curious," a user commented. "Bro, it's called tax saving, He definitely spending millions on his lifestyle," another user said. "He's also an angel investor and has invested in over 500 startups. His angel investments will also be giving him income as when he exits from investments," commented another person.

CRED CEO Kunal Shah reveals his salary, takes Rs 15,000 monthly

	Nearly 50 per cent of the CEO salary is fixed and the remainder is performance-based.
 

	Aon Hewitt had conducted an executive compensation survey 2015-16 across eight industries. ET reported that one of the major factors for high percentage of pay for performance is pressure from shareholders, which has prompted companies to tie a greater percentage of their CEO compensation to outcomes and results.
 

	"CEO compensation is outcome-driven. Shareholders need to see there is connection between compensation and outcome. As CEO compensation increases so does percentage of performance-linked pay," Anandorup Ghose, partner, Aon Hewitt, told ET.
 

	On one hand where Fortune 250 companies have nearly 70 per cent allocation to long-term incentives, globally, pay for performance can account up to 85 per cent of CEO salary.
 

	"Listed organisations are more aggressive in pay for performance, and these would also pay a chunk of CEO salary in ESOPs (employee stock option plans). The upside for listed companies is that markets are funding the CEO compensation," Ghose told ET.
 

	Meanwhile, employees are lauding the move as it is a fair game. 
 

	Speaking about increments, the survey stated that there was a marginal drop in fixed pay at CEO and CXO levels.
 

	Also, the best long-term incentives that companies are giving are the stock options.

The report also said that the average <keyword id="55739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO-compensation" source="Orion">CEO compensation</keyword> is at around ₹7 crore per year. Nearly 60% of a CEO salary is pay at risk — which is the sum of variable pay and long-term incentives (LTI). For other top executives like CFO, HR head and others, this is at 50%. “The annual long-term incentive for CEOs on average is 125% of the fixed pay. The sectors which are giving the sharpest CEO salary hikes are manufacturing at 9.3% and IT at 9.2%. CEOs from other sectors like consumer goods, financial institutions and life sciences could get a little over 8%. This CEO salary hike could be driven by the pandemic when they could not attract overseas talent - making the domestic C suite more attractive. “The cost of attracting, retaining and engaging leadership talent that grows business is rising rapidly. Not only is the average executive compensation increased the highest in five years, but variable pay and equity grants have also risen as companies cannot risk losing key talent at senior levels as this has implications on delivering business performance,” said <keyword id="211396" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nitin-sethi" source="Orion">Nitin Sethi</keyword>, partner and CEO of Human Capital Solutions at Aon India. The man running one of the largest tech companies in the world hasn’t received an equity award in more than two years, according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-05-29/google-ceo-turned-down-a-big-stock-award-after-lavish-payouts">Bloomberg</a>. Here’s why it’s a big deal The last stock award Pichai collected was back in 2016. Since then, his annual salary has been $650,000 along with perks like personal security. His portfolio currently has 51,249 unvested Google shares worth $58.1 million (₹4 billion). Not accepting any more new grants of restricted stock keeps that value from increasing. Bloomberg’s speculated that this could mean that the <keyword id="430203" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-CEO">Google CEO</keyword> might be heading towards retirement after an expert shared, “Clearly there's very little retentive effect left for Pichai”. Unvested stock is that which is yet to be invested in the market, which is when they turn liquid. It is common for top executives of companies to be paid in stocks, as they would be literally and figuratively invested in the success of the company. As the executive enhances the value of the company, their own coffers will build too. Indian CEOs aren’t shy In India however CEOs are not shy of taking home hefty packages. Last financial year, CP Gurnani — the MD and CEO of Tech Mahindra — <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/magazine/cover-story/ceos-indias-highest-paid-ceos-head-honchos-c-p-gurnani-a-m--naik-aditya-puri-ceo-salaries/story/279485.html">took home</a> ₹1.5 billion but ₹1.47 billion came exclusively from cashing in his stock options. Anil Naik, Larsen and Toubro’s non-executive chairman <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/business-economy/companies/article/this-is-how-much-lts-retired-chairman-anil-m-naik-earned-from-unused-leaves/355978">took home millions</a> just by cashing in all of his unused sick leaves worth ₹210 million, in 2018. There have been cases where incarcerated CEOs like Chanda Kocchar of ICICI who is embroiled in giving away illegal loans to Videocon. She has been asked by the board of directors to give back bonuses that she accrued during her tenure, the exact amount of which has not been disclosed. According to <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2019/may/10/chanda-kochhar-yet-to-return-bonuses-to-icici-bank-1974873.html">latest reports</a>, she is yet to pay the amount back. (The story was updated to clarify that Pichai said 'NO' to the stock award in 2018 and $58.1 million is only the value of the vested shares, not the stock award.)

The company's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), KBS Anand, took home a total remuneration of ₹11.8 crore in financial year ending March 2019. Asian Paints CEO's salary has nearly doubled in last five years while the company average was 50%

<a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2013/03/27/ceo-pay-executive-compensation-2012/2006203/">USA Today looked at the 170 Fortune 500 companies</a> that had filed proxy statements as of March 22nd, and that had a CEO that served for the entirety of fiscal 2012. 
16 <keyword id="6407546" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="CEOs">CEOs</keyword> managed to pass the $20 million mark, and a couple managed to break $30 million. One tech CEO saw a massive 81 percent jump in their compensation.

For several years now, the starting salaries of IT entrants have been within the Rs 2.5-3.5-lakh per annum, which has forced some companies to hire B.Sc and a few arts graduates who can support IT people, so that they can continue maintaining low salaries at the bottom of the pyramid.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>CEOs from 322 companies in the <keyword id="123873" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="SP-500">S&amp;P 500</keyword> received median pay of $13.7 million in 2020, the Wall Street Journal found.</li><li>CEO pay increased 15% over 2019 thanks to recovering stock prices and performance-linked awards.</li><li>Increasing numbers of shareholders are voting down proposed changes to executive compensation.</li></ul>CEOs at more than 300 of the top public companies in US received median pay of $13.7 million in 2020, up 15% from $12.8 million the year before, according to an <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-19-brought-the-economy-to-its-knees-but-ceo-pay-surged-11618142400?mod=hp_lead_pos1">analysis by the Wall Street Journal</a>. <keyword id="114251" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="executive-pay">Executive pay</keyword> rose thanks to a revived stock market and changes to compensation structures. Less than 10% of total pay was accounted for by <keyword id="10876" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="salary">salary</keyword> for most CEOs, the Journal found. The figure represents Richison's total compensation reported under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules, including salary, bonuses, and multiyear stock and option awards. However, the future value of these awards can be underestimated if stock prices rise. Nearly 17% of firms have received less than 70% shareholder support for executive pay measures in votes held since September, according to analysis by Equilar, up from 8% last year.

But it can be truly shocking to see how much more they make than the people that work for them.
Since most companies don't make that ratio available, <a href="http://go.bloomberg.com/multimedia/ceo-pay-ratio/">Bloomberg calculated it</a> based on the "U.S. government’s industry-specific averages for <keyword id="6355283" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pay">pay</keyword> and benefits of rank-and-file workers" and disclosed total CEO compensation by companies for the fiscal year that ended in 2012.
They found eight companies whose CEO made more than 1000 times what an average employee made. Each company was given the opportunity to respond to Bloomberg's calculations, and some disputed the methodology. Their comments can be seen <a href="http://go.bloomberg.com/multimedia/ceo-pay-ratio/">here.</a>

Some companies argue that the bulk of their CEO compensation is in the form of long-term stock options that give them incentives to perform well and to work for shareholders, and others that it's necessary to keep top leaders from leaving for a competitor. 
Successful CEOs do <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/04/whats-behind-the-huge-and-growing-ceo-worker-pay-gap/275435/">have an outsize impact</a>, but the numbers and ratios have gotten so large that it's not only demoralizing to employees, it's also increasingly hard to make a case to shareholders that justifies these astronomical figures.
Overall pay goes up and down, but the trend is way up as the below chart shows. And if a company is successful, why does so much more go to the CEO, and so little to rank and file employees?

There's an potential solution that's been started but not finished. The Dodd-Frank financial reform bill includes a provision requiring companies to disclose this ratio. However, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) hasn't drawn up the rules that would put it into action.
Companies are <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-04-30/ceo-pay-1-795-to-1-multiple-of-workers-skirts-law-as-sec-delays.html">actively lobbying against the rule</a>, which shows the power that employee-to-CEO ratios have to put compensation into context. 
The first step is to actually pass that rule so the information's out there. The second one is to beef up the ability of shareholders to context excessive pay. Right now "say on pay" votes are embarrassing, but non-binding. 
Maybe in some cases, extraordinary effort and success deserves to be rewarded. If that's true, then companies should be able to make a convincing argument, and not have to worry about shareholder votes.
Many of those supporting the lobbying effort against disclosure are <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-04-30/ceo-pay-1-795-to-1-multiple-of-workers-skirts-law-as-sec-delays.html">at the high end</a> for those ratios, which seems to imply that they don't feel that their argument for the higher discrepancy in pay is all that strong.

Using data from <a href="http://www.findthecompany.com/">FindTheCompany,</a> a site that compiles information on more than 30 million companies and more than 200,000 corporate officers in America, we've identified the 15 highest-paid CEOs in America.
Interestingly, Yahoo's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cms/posts/edit?id=526a896d69bedd4625d5ba5a">Marissa Mayer is the only woman who made it on our list</a>, with $36.6 million in total compensation in 2012 - a figure that, while impressive, pales in comparison to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's $96.2 million.
Disclosure: Total compensation for executives is <a href="http://www.sec.gov/answers/execomp.htm">disclosed to the SEC</a> to provide a comprehensive overview of a company's pay practices. <a href="http://www.findthecompany.com/">FindTheCompany</a> uses the same figure and methodology as the SEC. To clarify, the total compensation includes <keyword id="10876" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="salary">salary</keyword> and other pay, such as restricted stock options, which may be distributed throughout a long-term contract.

The 15 Highest-Paid CEOs In America

In what may sound as music to the ears for the top executives, the salaries of top executives, including chief executive officers (CEOs) and managing directors (MDs), are likely to rise by more than 10% this year, as per global management consultancy <keyword id="29961" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hay-Group">Hay Group</keyword>. 
 
"The economic outlook is positive and organisations believe that a stable government will give a spurt to their business prospects,” said Hemant Upadhyay, Hay Group India managing consultant and leader of executive rewards practice. 
 
"From an overall perspective, India's top management compensation mix continues to be more driven by fixed pay in comparison to other Asian, European and American economies," he added. 
 
However, companies are giving perks to reward top performers. “Incentive plans (short and long-term) have become key elements of top executive compensation. These plans are aimed at ensuring retention, driving business performance and/or recognising role model behaviours," said Upadhyay. 
 
As per the global management consultancy, employee stock option is the most common long-term incentive option, with 57% of the companies opting for this plan, followed by performance shares (36%) and restricted shares (21%). 
 
"Clearly, organisations are moving towards valuing the top team executives below the MD/CEO as equal stakeholders in business performance," he said.
