It's a prerequisite for certain roles in banking or private equity. Only 46% of those who took the first level in May passed the test.About one in five people who start the CFA process are students, Rob Langrick, chief product advocate at the CFA Institute, told Business Insider. Recently, the average age of candidates fell from 24 to about 23 as the number of undergraduates enrolling for the program increased, he said.Langrick said that more people prefer to start the process while they are still used to studying and are not yet tied to a full-time work schedule. And for students coming from less-known schools, the CFA designation stands out for employers, Langrick said.The increase in college students starting the CFA process comes as fewer people overall are taking the exams.CFA Level I sign-ups first dropped in late 2020, given pandemic-induced cancellations and exam deferments. But the numbers have dropped significantly since then.In 2018 and 2019, an average of about 162,000 people took the Level I exam each year. But in 2022 and 2023, that annual average dropped to about 87,000, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cfainstitute.org/-/media/documents/support/programs/cfa/cfa-exam-results-since-1963.pdf">CFA Institute.</a><h2 id="3ca3e423-23a7-45a2-8189-371b47fc3583">Helpful for portfolio managers but not for bankers</h2>Eric Wye, who graduated last year from the National University of Singapore, prepared for the Level I and II exams as a student. He thought his economics degree didn't cover enough applied finance for the kinds of jobs he wanted to do.But getting partway through the CFA didn't change his trajectory, Wye said."I felt that it did not explicitly give me an advantage in searching for finance internships, as I believe prior experience in related roles might be more valued," he said.Wye is now working at a multinational bank while preparing for the Level III exam.While the certification may be important for roles like portfolio managers and securities analysts, Wye does not think its value applies to all <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/finance-job-search-headhunter-database-private-equity-investment-banking-hedge-funds">finance careers</a>, including investment banking or sales and trading. On the job for a year now, he hasn't found many peers who passed all three CFA levels, nor that there is an implicit expectation of holding the designation.Another candidate, who is in his third year of school at Singapore Management University and is preparing for Level I, agreed that the exam is more helpful for those outside finance looking to break in.The student spoke to BI on the condition of anonymity, because he is a summer intern not authorized to speak with the media. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Criminal gangs are helping students cheat on exams in India, according to The Wall Street Journal.</li><li>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam.</li></ul>India's massive examination machine is floundering.This year, the country's primary testing body — the National Testing Agency (NTA) — has faced a series of controversies.They range from exam delays and cancellations to more serious allegations of errors in questions and leaked papers.While NTA officials have denied that any exam papers were leaked the federal education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, told the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv22wl82yldo">BBC</a> in June that "some irregularities" had been found.Now, it seems some are taking advantage of the examination chaos.According to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/india/gangs-are-making-millions-helping-indians-cheat-on-exams-32500cce">Wall Street Journal, some middle-class families are paying criminal gangs thousands </a>to help their children get the upper hand on these exams.<h2 id="5266815a-7004-480f-a5ba-395977759d6c">Cheating in India's medical entrance exam</h2>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam, also known as the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).This year, around 2.4 million students in India took the exam, competing for medical college seats totaling about 0.02% of that number."Very few people crack it on the first try," one student, who asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told Business Insider.She spent a year preparing for the undergraduate and postgraduate exams, respectively. During this time, she woke up at 4 a.m. and studied for at least 10-12 hours each day.Some prefer to take an easier route.The Journal found that several students had paid $15,000-20,000 to illegally look at the question paper before the exam. BI could not independently verify the figures.The police made multiple arrests related to exam cheating after results showed that 67 people received perfect scores in the NEET exams this year."Question papers are sold at extravagantly high prices," Ashok Rathore, a police officer who investigated cheating linked to India's medical school exam, told the Journal. "It's a nexus of desperate students, parents, tuition centers and printing presses."<h2 id="378edaf6-be36-458e-8847-661e66638c81">Leaked questions</h2>One student told BI that several Telegram channels dedicated to exam prep saw messages encouraging students "struggling with exams and don't have time for studies" to get in touch for "help.""My friend said he was asked to pay around 15,000 rupees ($180) to enter the private channel where they shared the questions," she said.BI reached out to the Telegram account offering "help". The person said they can provide next year's medical entrance exam questions for around 1 lakh rupees ($1,200).High ranks in these exams mean coveted "seats" in medical colleges operated by the state and national governments. Those with money can still legally obtain places in private medical colleges if they pay fees ranging from $115,000 to $145,000.However, some students with the financial capacity prefer cheating and getting a government seat instead."It makes very good economic sense," a senior medical advisor with knowledge of the matter told BI. "The question paper will be given for about 25 lakh rupees (around $29,000). For that much, they get a free seat in a government college where they only have to pay around 16,000 rupees ($190) per annum.""For the entire five-year degree, that still only comes to around one lakh rupees ($1191), so of course rich students would rather do that instead of paying their way into private medical schools."<h2 id="4ff61c3d-756d-47c9-8f47-2f6be9f1f6a0">Earning a 'merit' seat</h2>The advisor — who preferred to remain anonymous but whose identity is known to BI — also said there is a significant amount of respect that comes with having "earned" a merit seat instead of paying their way into a private "management" seat."Unfortunately, there are very few objective metrics that people have as outsiders to judge the competence of their doctors, especially at a time when everybody in India sits with an MBBS board outside their clinic," agreed Asish George, a doctor who cleared the entrance exam in 2014."For those people, the fact that someone cracked a highly competitive entrance exam and got in would inspire more confidence than someone who paid their way through the whole thing."According to the Journal, authorities in India have tried to install video cameras inside exam halls and increased their monitoring of social media to catch cheaters. But many are still finding ways to illegally gain the upper hand, at a high price. The NTA did not immediately respond to a request by BI for comment.

India's exam system is in chaos, with some families paying thousands to help their kids cheat

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare postponed the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (<keyword id="6361994" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="NEET" source="Orion">NEET</keyword> PG) Examination on Saturday, which was scheduled to be held on Sunday, and said that a fresh date will be announced at the earliest. The NEET-PG exams were scheduled to be held on June 23. "Taking into consideration, the recent incidents of allegations regarding the integrity of certain competitive examinations, the Ministry of Health has decided to undertake a thorough assessment of the robustness of the processes of the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, conducted by the National Board of Examination for medical students," the ministry statement read. "It has accordingly been decided, as a precautionary measure, to postpone the NEET-PG Entrance Examination, scheduled to be held on 23rd June, 2024. The fresh date of this examination will be notified at the earliest," the ministry added. "The Ministry of Health sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to the students. This decision has been taken in the best interests of the students and to maintain the sanctity of the examination process," the health ministry said. The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) was fully prepared to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) Post-Graduate (PG) 2024. Speaking exclusively to ANI, Dr Rakesh Sharma, OSD to President and Member, Governing Body, NBEMS said, "All eyes of the nation are on NBEMS for the conduct of NEET PG 2024 and we will not let down the hope of the nation. We will conduct the test through a computer-based test (CBT) mode throughout the country." On Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) for successfully delivering and maintaining transparency, he said, "NBEMS has robust SOPs for conducting exams because of which NBEMS has been successfully delivering the exams year after year. These SOPs are stringently followed. NBEMS has worked very hard on maintaining the secrecy of the question paper and there is no chance that there will be any leakage of the question paper." He further said that NBEMS is supported by medical colleges, faculty, MoHFW, Flying Squads, Deans and Principals, Vice-chancellor and other agencies, "NBEMS has support from various medical colleges, faculty, MoHFW and other agencies. NBEMS has already briefed the chief secretaries and DGP of all states for safe and secure conduct of the exam." "In order to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations through the National Testing Agency (NTA), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education constituted a High-Level Committee of Experts to make recommendations on Reform in mechanism of examination process improvement in data security protocols and the structure and functioning of National Testing Agency," the ministry said.

New dates announced for NEET-PG 2024, exam to be held on August 11

New Delhi, The Central Board of Secondary Education (<keyword id="6356155" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cbse" source="Orion">CBSE</keyword>) on Tuesday announced date sheet for class 10 and 12 board exams with the examination for both classes beginning from February 15. The class 10 exams will conclude on March 13 and the class 12 exams will end on April 2. "While preparing the date sheet, the board has kept in mind that there is sufficient gap between two subjects. Dates of competitive exams like JEE have been kept in mind while deciding schedule for class 12," Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said.

According to the report, each student is demanding about $15,000 in compensation.The school did try to rectify their error by giving the students back their papers for 90 seconds during lunchtime, per Yonhap.Candidates, however, were only allowed to fill in their solutions for unsolved questions. They weren't allowed to amend the responses to questions they'd solved earlier.According to Yonhap's report, the students claimed they were badly affected by the disruption they'd faced.Students said the re-test administered during lunchtime provided little relief, as it ate into their break and distracted them from their subsequent paper. ChatGPT has Google on high alert. It's not just that ChatGPT is offering serious competition to its search engine. It's that the technology represents everything Google was afraid artificial intelligence would become. If ChatGPT runs rampant, the search giant fears it could ruin AI adoption for everyone.<ul><li>Since going viral, ChatGPT has demonstrated how generative AI can be user-friendly, practical, and productive. But it also comes with controversy: the possibility that it can be used for cheating, phishing, malware, and other bad behaviors.</li><li>The CEO behind ChatGPT, however, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-chatgpt-ceo-sam-altman-responds-school-plagiarism-concerns-bans-2023-1">thinks people just need to adapt</a>. He pointed to how schools now use calculators to augment math lessons. Google isn't just afraid of competition from ChatGPT — the giant is scared ChatGPT will kill AI

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The University of Minnesota law school gave ChatGPT its law school exams alongside real students.</li><li>The chatbot was a C student, with a better aptitude for essays than multiple choice.</li></ul>A group of University of Minnesota Law School instructors gave the AI bot ChatGPT four exams alongside real students and found the bot — considered the world's most advanced example of generative artificial intelligence — to be a C student on paper.Curious about how ChatGPT might be used to both help students cheat and aid teachers in teaching, professors decided to test its capabilities.Associate law school professor Jon Choi ran exam questions through ChatGPT, reformatted them to fit the exam, and mixed the resultant exams in with students' tests.ChatGPT earned a C+ average and "a low but passing grade" in Constitutional Law, Employee Benefits, Taxation, and Torts, according to Choi. (It came in 36th out of 40 students in Con Law, 18th out of 19 in Employee Benefits, 66th out of 67 in Tax, and dead-last at 75 out of 75 students in Torts, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4335905">according to the paper</a>).It performed better on essays than on multiple choice questions. The bot performed particularly poorly at multiple choice questions involving math, "<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/JonathanHChoi/status/1617701112869707776?s=20&amp;t=69po67oAMYUQhJDRyi3seg">which ChatGPT bombed</a>."In essays, it could recite legal rules and correctly describe cases (sans citations), but failed at "spotting issues" and providing deep reasoning or analysis, Choi said.Of the experiment's three human graders, all of whom graded the tests blindly, at least two told Choi they had a hunch about which exams were from AI — and they were right. ChatGPT responses, for instance, used perfect grammar and were more repetitive. (<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4335905">Choi's co-authors</a> — Kristin E. Hickman, Amy Monahan, and Daniel Schwarcz — acted as the three graders).For now, spotting the difference in exams is relatively easy. "I think professors would get it right almost all the time," he told Insider. But, a ChatGPT-generated rough draft that a student revises would be, he said, "a lot more difficult to spot."While exams are graded on a curve, and ChatGPT ranked as one of the worst students in class, Choi pointed out that he believed University of Minnesota Law School students to be relatively fierce competition. A considerable 97% of first-time test takers pass the Minnesota Bar exam, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://law.umn.edu/news/2022-10-25-97-bar-passage-rate-minnesota-law-once-again-finishes-top-state">according to the university</a>, and, in the fall of 2020, the pass rate for Minnesota Law grads taking the bar for the first time was<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://law.umn.edu/news/2021-10-04-minnesota-law-grads-once-again-have-highest-bar-pass-rate-state"> the third best in the nation</a>, behind Harvard and Yale."I would say just on knowledge of the law and the ability to synthesize and make legal arguments, Minnesota students are going to be some of the best in the country," Choi told Insider. "ChatGPT is performing near the bottom of a class in which 99% of the students will pass the bar exam. Almost all of the students are going to be successful in their careers. So, it's a tough comparison." While the results would have <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/transactional/chatgpt-passes-law-school-exams-despite-mediocre-performance-2023-01-25/">landed ChatGPT on academic probation</a>, it would still likely be good enough to earn a law degree."Overall, ChatGPT wasn't a great law student acting alone," Choi <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/JonathanHChoi/status/1617701125125472256?s=20&amp;t=69po67oAMYUQhJDRyi3seg">tweeted on January 23</a>, "but we expect that collaborating with humans, language models like ChatGPT would be very useful to law students taking exams and to practicing lawyers."Choi believes ChatGPT could be a boon to his students and peers if used intentionally. Choi used it to write code for the paper's statistics and graphs, and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://twitter.com/JonathanHChoi/status/1617701130750038017?s=20&amp;t=69po67oAMYUQhJDRyi3seg">said</a> it worked "VERY well," noting it "produced simple code that would be tedious to write (e.g. bootstrapping p-values, creating graph grids)."While some school districts have <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-schools-ban-chatgpt-cheating-concern-grows-2023-1">banned ChatGPT</a>, some teachers have <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/12/technology/chatgpt-schools-teachers.html">embraced it as an educational tool</a>.Rather than pretending ChatGPT doesn't exist, Choi focused on how law schools can adapt to a changed environment. To do that, professors may need to ditch exams that mainly test simple knowledge of the law."If lawyers start to use these tools to augment their abilities to be lawyers, then we need to appropriately change our teaching and our tests," Choi told Insider."When they invented calculators, they didn't force students to continue doing math by hand," Choi said. "They allowed them to use calculators and just changed the nature of the test.
