<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div>New Delhi (AFP) - Doctors in India have removed the skeleton of a foetus that had been inside a woman for 36 years in what is believed to be the world's longest ectopic pregnancy, a doctor has said.
The 60-year-old woman became pregnant at the age of 24 but suffered a miscarriage because the foetus had been growing outside of her uterus, the doctor told AFP on Monday. 
The woman, from a poor rural area of central India, was "terrified" of having surgery at the time to remove the remains of the foetus, and instead sought medication for the pain at a local clinic.
Although the pain gradually subsided, it returned years later, forcing the woman to seek medical help at a hospital in western India, Murtaza Akhtar said. 
"She came to us complaining of pain in the abdomen," said Akhtar, head of surgery at the N.K.P. Salve Institute of Medical Sciences in the city of Nagpur.
Doctors felt a lump on her lower right abdomen and feared it could be cancer -- but further tests and scans revealed a calcified mass.
"Once we saw the scans, our first reaction was 'what are we dealing with'? It was actually a matured skeleton encapsulated in a calcified sac," Akhtar said.
"A 60-year-old woman with a foetus lying in her abdomen for 36 years is a medical marvel. It's something we had never heard about."
The doctors searched medical literature and discovered a woman in Belgium who had retained the remains of a foetus for 18 years following an ectopic pregnancy, the longest they could find on record.
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the egg implants outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes.
A team of doctors in Nagpur successfully performed surgery to remove the mass that was lodged between the woman's uterus, intestines and bladder.
"She was shocked when she first got to know what had happened. But she is fine now and is recuperating," Akhtar said.

India Doctors Remove Fetus Left Inside Woman For 36 years

By Aditi Khanna London, Apr 27 () An Indian-origin general practitioner, who came to the UK in 1973 after completing his medical training in India and was working as a doctor in East Africa, has died of COVID-19, his National Health Service (NHS) Trust in Essex, south-east England, said in a tribute.Dr Kamlesh Kumar Masson, 78, described as an "excellent clinician", lost his fight against the deadly virus at University College London. "We were very sad to hear of the passing of Dr Masson, he was a well respected and liked general practitioner (GP) in Thurrock, with a significant contribution over the last 30 years in the Borough caring for patients and providing support," said Dr Kallil, a fellow GP and Chair of the NHS Thurrock Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). "Later he provided GP services in both Thurrock and Basildon. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr Masson for his commitment and passion and our condolences to his family for their loss," he said. Masson worked across the UK in Ashby De La Zouch, Kings Lynn and other parts of the country before settling down with his family in the locality of South Essex in 1975, where he established his career in General Practice. Kamlesh founded Milton Road Surgery, Grays, in 1985 and worked there continuously until 2017. He then went on to do locum work across Thurrock and Basildon until his last working day of March 12 this year. "He was an excellent clinician whose drive to constantly improve his clinical skills and knowledge with passion and enthusiasm will remain with us all as a reminder to always try to be the best. He was recognised in the locality by patients, colleagues and peers as a dedicated, determined, positive individual who would always do his utmost to help in all endeavours," his family said in a tribute statement. "Dr Masson was an honest, kind and generous man who was deeply respected by anyone who was privileged to cross paths with him. He was jovial, funny and kind, always wanting to make the best of any situation," it noted. Masson contracted COVID-19, which caused bilateral pneumonia requiring admission to Basildon Hospital and then University College London Hospital on March 31, which marked his 78th birthday."Dr Masson fought bravely, but tragically lost his battle with COVID-19 on April 16th 2020. Our lifelong thanks will go to the doctors and staff at University College London Hospital who fought tirelessly to save a hero's life. "Dr Masson was taken from us too soon and still had so much to give. He had practised medicine for over five decades and was a dedicated servant to the NHS for 47 years. He would have wanted to practise medicine for many more years to come. He was a true gentleman who will be missed, but not forgotten," his faily said. New Delhi, Apr 13 () State-run Coal India has engaged its retired doctors to meet the shortage of medical staff at its hospitals to fight COVID-19 pandemic. Coal India arm Central Coalfields Ltd has engaged seven retired doctors while Northern Coalfields Ltd and Western Coalfields Ltd have engaged two physicians each, an official told . Eastern Coalfields Ltd and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd have hired one retired doctor each, the official added. Coal India had recently issued guidelines to engage retired doctors and paramedical staff on temporary contract basis in its fight against the pandemic, which has spread to almost every state in the country. "Keeping in view of the shortage of doctors and paramedical staff in the hospitals/ dispensaries of CIL/subsidiaries and need to prepare well to prevent/address the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19), the PSU had recently issues guidelines for engagement of retired doctors and paramedical staff of CIL/ Subsidiaries on temporary contract basis," the official said. These guidelines will be effective for three months only, the official said. Presently, 839 doctors are working in Coal India which accounts for over 80 per cent of domestic coal output. Coal India subsidiaries have set up 1,509 isolation beds in eight states. The eight coal bearing states are Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Assam. Besides, Coal India arm MCL will also fund a COVID-19 hospital, having 500 beds and 25 intensive care units, in the capital city of Odisha. The hospital was recently inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. CIL subsidiaries have also distributed more than 3.3 lakh face masks to the people in and around coal mines. The PSU has developed a sanitising chamber for disinfecting its mine workers. The way towards this is with a uterine transplant, the same as a kidney or any other transplant."While a transplanted uterus would not allow a transgender woman to conceive naturally, due to the womb not connecting to any fallopian tubes, she could in theory become pregnant through IVF, The Mirror said.There has only been one recorded case of a trans woman having a uterus transplant, Danish artist Lili Elbe in 1931, but she died months later from complications. "And you still don't have a functioning cervix or vagina to allow the birth canal.""The risk of death to the patient would be very high. Both from the operation to allow the transplantation and also from the pregnancy. It would simply not be ethically acceptable," he said.Dr Kaushik, who runs a busy clinic performing gender-affirming surgeries, said he is confident in the procedure."This is the future. We cannot predict exactly when this will happen but it will happen very soon," he told The Mirror."We have our plans and we are very very optimistic about this."

World Brain Tumour Day is observed on June 8 every year to increase awareness and educate the public about brain tumours. In 2020, brain tumour was ranked as the 10th most common kind of tumour among Indians. The International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC) reported that there are over 28,000 cases of brain tumours reported in India each year and more than 24,000 people reportedly die due to brain tumours annually. "The occurrence of brain tumours in India is steadily rising. More and more cases of brain tumours are reported each year in our country among people of varied age groups. Every year 40,000 to 50,000 people are diagnosed with brain tumours, out of which 20 per cent are children," Aditya Gupta, Director, <keyword id="17646966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neurosurgery-and-cyberknife-centre" source="Orion">Neurosurgery and Cyberknife Centre</keyword>, Artemis Hospital, told IANS. "India is witnessing an increasing trend of central nervous system tumours. The prevalence ranges from 5 to 10 per 1,00,000 population. Very few people know that out of these, only two per cent of tumours turn cancerous," added Ravindra Srivastava, Director <keyword id="6498125" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="neurosurgery" source="Orion">Neurosurgery</keyword>, Primus Hospital. The doctors said it's critical to recognise the early warning signals since symptoms like unexplained nausea, persistent headaches, seizures, visual problems and cognitive changes shouldn't be disregarded. According to Shashi Shekhar Singh, Neurosurgery, Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, the risk factors for brain tumours vary depending on the type of tumour. "While the exact causes of brain tumours are often unknown, the factors associated with an increased risk of developing a brain tumour include age: in adults, gliomas are more common, while medulloblastomas are more prevalent in children; genetic conditions and family history; exposure to ionising radiation, such as radiation therapy for cancers or exposure to nuclear accidents; and gender: meningiomas are more common in females, while gliomas are slightly more common in males," Singh told IANS. Further, research is also ongoing to understand the possible role of certain environmental factors in the development of brain tumours. Some studies have suggested potential associations between exposure to certain chemicals or electromagnetic fields and an increased risk of brain tumours. However, more research is needed to establish definitive links. The health experts called for a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, frequent exercise and enough sleep to promote general brain health and reduce the risk of brain tumours. Essential strategies in lowering the risk also include keeping the brain safe from damage and injury and avoiding exposure to toxic substances. However, "it's important to note that the majority of brain tumours occur in individuals without any identifiable risk factors. Most cases are sporadic, meaning they occur by chance without a known cause," Singh said. "If you have concerns about your risk of developing a brain tumour, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional who can assess your individual situation and provide appropriate guidance," he added. Brain tumour cases rising 'steadily' in India, 20% are children: Doctors

By Aditi Khanna London, Apr 17 () An Indian-origin doctor who had been stranded in Delhi amid India's ongoing coronavirus lockdown on Friday expressed his relief at being back at work at his hospital in Suffolk, eastern England.Dr Sushil Misra, a consultant in acute medicine for the National Health Service (NHS), was among those who were able to obtain a seat on a British government arranged chartered flight from Delhi to Heathrow last weekend and able to join work from this week."A lot has happened here at the hospital, a lot of rota and policy changes, and new protocols. It felt great [to be back], it felt like being home and I want to again say thanks for everything the BMA (British Medical Association) did for me," said Misra.The BMA had been lobbying the UK authorities to prioritise the medical professionals among the nearly 21,000 stranded British citizens in India. Misra had travelled to India early last month to visit his parents and was due to return on March 29 but got caught in India's coronavirus lockdown, imposed in mid-March. Eager to be reunited with his wife and daughter in the UK, and to return to his job, he said he spent the next fortnight doing everything he could to get back to the UK.In response to Misra's plight, the British Medical Association (BMA) had called on the government to do more to prioritise doctors and healthcare professionals stranded overseas in getting back to the UK and the NHS. Meanwhile, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) announced an agreement with the Indian government for a series of charter flights to be organised to repatriate its stranded nationals."They sent a vehicle to pick me up and take me to the airport. On the way you could see everything was locked down and only vehicles with special permission were allowed on the road. It was about five hours before the plane arrived – all the shops in the airport were closed, but fortunately we were provided with water before entering the terminal," recalls Misra.Misra, who along with his fellow passengers had to wear a facemask for the duration of the eight-and-a-half-hour flight back to the UK, said he took every precaution possible to protect himself from the virus onboard the crowded aircraft."I had taken my sanitising wipes with me and cleaned the seat before sitting and did not use the bathroom once during the flight," he said.After arriving at Heathrow airport last Sunday, he headed to London where he was able to briefly see his daughter, a junior doctor, before returning home to his wife in Suffolk."My wife was waiting at the front door, but I went straight to the back garden where all my suitcases, clothes and shoes were sanitised, and I got changed. Only then was I admitted into the house," he said."People are very happy I'm back and some of my colleagues joked asking whether I had swum home. I am just very pleased to be home." BMA council chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul said it was of "paramount" importance that the UK government did everything it could to ensure that doctors and other healthcare professionals stranded overseas were able to get back to the UK as soon as possible on the charter flights organised over the past few days."Increasingly we are hearing from doctors who are stranded as borders closed around the world, and unable to return to practice in the UK.
