<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ukrainian officials said its forces have reduced Russia's artillery advantage on the battlefield.</li><li>Military experts said it's partly down to Ukraine's long-range strikes on Russian ammo depots.</li></ul>Ukraine is reducing Russia's artillery advantage on the battlefield, and recent attacks on ammo depots have likely sped that up.Ukraine's deputy defense minister, Ivan Havryliuk, told Ukrainian television last week that Russian forces were now firing three times as many shells as Ukraine as of early October, down from eight times as many last winter, per the defense ministry-run <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://armyinform.com.ua/2024/10/01/odyn-do-troh-perevaga-voroga-v-snaryadah-skorotylasya/">Army Inform outlet</a>.This came less than a month after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dycbZxsrhYE&amp;t">CNN</a> that Russia's artillery advantage around Pokrovsk, a town in eastern Ukraine, had dropped from 12-to-1 to 2.5-to-1 after the start of Ukraine's surprise incursion into Kursk in August.According to military experts, these developments are likely due in part to Ukraine's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-hit-another-russian-ammo-depot-deep-strike-on-airfield-2024-10">recent long-range strikes</a> on Russian ammunition depots."The recent strikes likely destroyed a significant amount of munitions and may have also damaged logistics systems used to support force groupings," said John Hardie, deputy director of the Russia Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.The targeted sites stored glide bombs, ballistic missiles, and artillery shells. However, Hardie said it is impossible to say with certainty how much or even exactly what was destroyed in those attacks, making it difficult to definitively say how much ammunition was lost.<h2 id="eac0122e-da63-4e23-bb3d-29fc1b76f7a6">Taking out the ammo</h2>Ukraine damaged several rear Russian ammo depots using long-range weapons in a string of long-range strikes that began last month.<div type="image" title="An aerial shot of destroyed ammunition storage buildings." height="1448" width="2418" msid="114147144" hostid="261" sizebytes="555366"></div>One took place overnight on September 17 and targeted a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-strikes-russian-arsenals-may-put-moscow-logistics-in-bind-2024-9">facility in Toropets</a> in Russia's western Tver region with long-range drones.A source in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/satellite-images-show-damage-russian-arsenal-blew-up-earthquake-strength-2024-9">Security Service</a> of Ukraine told BI at the time that a large warehouse in Toropets where Russian munitions and ballistic missiles, including Iskanders, were stored was "literally wiped off the face of the earth" in the attack.A few days later, on September 21, the Ukrainian military said it <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-enormous-explosion-at-russian-ammunition-depot-ukraine-war-2024-9">hit another arsenal</a> in the Tver region — this one at Oktyabrsky.It also said it targeted a depot near <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/video-enormous-explosion-at-russian-ammunition-depot-ukraine-war-2024-9">Tikhoretsk</a>, a town in the southern Krasnodar Krai region, describing the site as one of Russia's largest ammunition storage facilities.Meanwhile, on Thursday, Ukraine said it struck a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-hit-another-russian-ammo-depot-deep-strike-on-airfield-2024-10">military airfield</a> and an ammunition warehouse in the southwestern Republic of Adygea, causing "fire damage" to the airfield, a base for Su-34 and Su-27 warplanes.<div type="image" title="A composite of satellite images, both of an ammunition depot. The right image shows burned ground." height="3000" width="4000" msid="114147155" hostid="261" sizebytes="834686"></div>While the damage has been "very significant," Emil Kastehelmi, a Finnish military analyst with the Black Bird Group analysis firm, said it is hard to assess the impact of the depot attacks because we don't "precisely" know which munitions and how many blew up.The number of sites destroyed can be counted, he said, but it's "almost impossible" to say how many munitions were stored in each.Hardie said that if Ukraine's claims about the Toropets warehouse containing Iskander ballistic missiles are true, and that a large number were destroyed, then it would diminish Russia's near-term capacity to strike high-value targets like critical infrastructure and air defense systems.The Iskander is a ballistic missile that can strike targets within 300 miles with a roughly 1,000-pound warhead, with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://cepa.org/article/russias-swelling-missile-arsenal-threatens-to-tip-the-scales-of-war/">estimates</a> that Russia can produce 30 of these a month.<div type="image" title="A large crater, downed trees, and destroyed railcars in a satellite image." height="1446" width="2182" msid="114147146" hostid="261" sizebytes="1062800"></div>Looking at the Tikhoretsk ammunition storage facility, he said the impact would depend on exactly how much ammunition was there at the time. The impact was probably "temporary," he said, but it could have diminished Russia's capabilities for a period of "days or weeks."<h2 id="7f6e2849-386f-4b77-8dbb-b3b6d655864d">Striking deep inside Russia in the long run</h2>To carry out these long-range strikes inside Russia, Ukraine has had to rely heavily on the limited supplies of long-range drones and missiles it produces, as it has been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interactive-map-shows-russian-targets-ukraine-could-hit-with-atacms-2024-8">barred</a> from using its arsenal of Western-provided long-range missiles like ATACMS to <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-says-it-destroyed-bombs-in-deep-strike-russian-airbase-2024-8">go after targets</a> in Russia.Last month, Zelenskyy told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-strikes-russia-ammo-depots-show-impact-of-west-sanctuary-2024-9">CNN</a> lifting those restrictions was a "key" part of the victory plan, and last week he <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/ukrayina-mozhe-j-bude-stvoryuvati-najkrashi-zrazki-zbroyi-vi-93613">said</a> the country had successfully tested its long-range "Palianytsia" jet-powered drone.According to Hardie, Ukraine could "seriously" undercut Russia's offensive potential if it can replicate last month's strikes "consistently."He said the threat of such strikes could lead Russia to disperse its weapons depots and staging points, making its logistics far less efficient.But he said Ukraine's capacity to do so relies on its production rate of long-range one-way attack drones."Many, probably most, of the drones fired in a salvo get shot down, so you have to launch a lot of them," he added."Destroying these areas would bring greater success to Ukraine," said Mark Temnycky, a nonresident fellow with the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Center, referring to military and paramilitary targets on Russian soil, "as the areas that are directly supplying Russian soldiers would be destroyed."<div type="image" title="A close-up view of destroyed buildings and downed trees at Oktyabrsky on September 22." height="1213" width="2000" msid="114147149" hostid="261" sizebytes="570586"></div>But Kastehelmi said that in the long run, Russia will "most likely" be able to adapt to Ukraine's long-range strikes."The Russians will, of course, react and adapt — if they're able to switch to a safer way of storing ammo, for example, by decentralizing their system, creating a heavy impact will be more difficult," he said.And if Ukraine wants to continue these strikes, it will have to produce long-range drones or missiles "relatively efficiently" and "with decent costs," he said.Even then, Russia may be able to ramp up its air-defense capabilities near such sites in a way that could put a dent in Ukraine's long-range attacks."I doubt the Ukrainians are able to produce so many long-range missiles or drones that it could turn the tide of the war," Kastehelmi added.

Ukraine is eroding Russia's military advantage with strikes on its ammo depots

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A recently-departed Googler published a scathing letter about the company.</li><li>He accused Google of destroying transparency between executives and staff.</li></ul>An ex-Google employee has published a highly critical letter attacking the firm's "eroded" culture and accusing CEO Sundar Pichai of lacking "visionary leadership."Ian Hickson, who worked for Google for 18 of its 25 years, said he resigned from the company this month.<a target="_blank" href="https://ln.hixie.ch/?start=1700627373&amp;count=1">Posting on his blog</a>, Hickson said he was "very lucky" to have experienced the early days of the company, where executives were candid with staff and ambitious experimentation was encouraged — but said the search giant's culture had since "deteriorated.""Transparency evaporated," he wrote. "Where previously I would eagerly attend every company-wide meeting to learn what was happening, I found myself now able to predict the answers executives would give word for word. Today, I don't know anyone at Google who could explain what Google's vision is. Morale is at an all-time low."If you talk to therapists in the bay area, they will tell you all their Google clients are unhappy with Google."Hickson said he spent his last nine years at Google working on Flutter, a platform for developing apps.To be sure, Google employs more than 100,000 staffers, and Hickson's complaints may simply reflect his own view.But his letter is being shared privately and <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/jpohhhh/status/1727372291250479115">publicly</a> on social media among current and former Googlers, some of whom agree with its sentiments. And he is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-document-bureaucracy-slime-mold-staff-frustration-2023-1">far from the first employee</a> who has criticized the company's increasing bureaucracy since founders <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/larry-page-sergey-brin-post-google-investments-businesses-wealth-2022-12">Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepped away</a>.Hickson is unusually candid, however, especially in his remarks on CEO Sundar Pichai."Much of these problems with Google today stem from a lack of visionary leadership from Sundar Pichai, and his clear lack of interest in maintaining the cultural norms of early Google," Hickson continued. "A symptom of this is the spreading contingent of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-industry-fake-work-problem-bad-managers-bosses-layoffs-jobs-2023-7">inept middle management</a>."Decisions went from being made for the benefit of users, to the benefit of Google, to the benefit of whoever was making the decision," he wrote.One of the most interesting parts of the letter criticizes the company's "short-sighted" layoffs. Google announced in January that it would cut 12,000 employees in an effort to reduce costs. Since then it has been making smaller, quieter cuts across the company, to the point employees are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-lay-offs-voice-assistant-bard-roles-contractors-2023-11">now tracking layoffs in an internal document</a>, Business Insider reported.Hickson says these layoffs have "insidious" effects on the culture that can cause employees to "dramatically dial back any risk-taking.""I see all of this at Google now," wrote Hickson. 'Morale is at an all-time low': Ex-Googler writes scathing letter slamming layoffs and 'eroded' culture

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Russia is sending a new division of its VDV paratrooper force into Ukraine, the UK MOD said.</li><li>But the division is "likely be poorly trained," it said.</li></ul>Russia's once-elite paratrooper force is being padded out with low-quality soldiers that are eroding its elite status, according to UK intelligence.The UK Ministry of Defence <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/DefenceHQ/status/1730110144875311108?s=20">gave an intelligence update on Thursday</a> on the VDV — Russia's once-revered paratrooper force.The VDV has "likely started deploying the newly formed 104th Guards Airborne Division (104 GAD) in Ukraine for the first time," the update said.It would bring the number of VDV division up to five, from its previous level of four, per the update.But this division will "likely be poorly trained and is unlikely to meet the erstwhile elite standards of the VDV," the MOD said.The VDV traditionally served as shock troops and a rapid-intervention force, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russians-debate-role-of-elite-vdv-paratroopers-after-ukraine-losses-2023-2?r=US&amp;IR=T">Business Insider previously reported</a>.But that role, as well as the nature of the troops in it, has changed as the invasion of Ukraine grinds on.The UK MOD said in September <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-using-elite-vdv-paratroopers-as-regular-infantry-uk-intel-2023-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">that Russia was using the VDV as regular infantry</a> to compensate for other overstretched forces, even though the VDV's units likely were not even at full strength.The Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, gave a similar analysis that same month,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-using-elite-paratroopers-unusual-way-airborne-name-only-analysts-2023-9?r=US&amp;IR=T"> saying Russia was using the VDV like regular infantry</a>, perhaps making them "airborne in name only."It also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-elite-vdv-morale-critical-levels-losses-isw-2023-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">said last month that the VDV's motivation to fight had dropped to "critical levels"</a> after steep losses.The quality of Russian troops has degraded as Russia continues its invasion, which it launched in February 2022.Once-elite units have seen their losses <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-155th-brigade-destroyed-ukraine-poor-reinforcements-vuhledar-bucha-pavlika-2023-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">replaced with worse-trained reinforcements</a>.The MOD said the 104 GAD was likely assembling in Ukraine's southeastern Kherson Oblast, a key battleground where <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-pushed-russian-forces-back-2-5-miles-from-dnipro-river-banks-2023-11">Ukraine's forces have recently reported advances</a>.

Russia is stuffing an elite paratrooper force with poorly trained troops that are eroding its power, UK intel says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>China's is expanding its influence in Central Asia, and pushing out Russia, an expert said.</li><li>Russian influence is waning despite formal alliances and the old ties of the Soviet Union.</li></ul>Russian influence over its closest allies is waning as China and Turkey step up their efforts, supplanting a Russia distracted by its invasion of Ukraine.Thomas Graham, cofounder of Yale University's Russian, East European, and Eurasian studies program, told Insider that in Central Asia and the South Caucasus "dynamics are changing."It's there that the countries with the closest historical, cultural, and financial ties to Russia are located, including lands once dominated by Moscow as parts of the Soviet Union.It is also home to most members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO): Russian President Vladimir Putin's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-csto-never-been-effective-makes-putin-look-weak-experts-2023-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">equivalent of NATO</a>.The CSTO is made up of Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Cracks in their friendship have been exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine,<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/csto-russia-equivalent-of-nato-crumbling-amid-failures-ukraine-war-2023-5?r=US&amp;IR=T"> experts previously told Insider</a>.Russia's influence on them is also being weakened by more countries competing for their attention, Graham said. Again, at Russia's expense, it is building up its commercial ties with Central Asia."China and Turkey's efforts "have negative consequences for Russia's global standing. At least that's the way they would think about this in the Kremlin," Graham said.<h2>Russia's woes in Ukraine deepen the problem </h2>Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, resulting in its political isolation from much of the rest of the world.Its military — the bedrock of Russia's pre-eminence in the CSTO — has also been a source of embarrassment as it failed to overrun a smaller and weaker enemy.This humbling spectacle weakened CSTO members' reliance on Russia, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-csto-never-been-effective-makes-putin-look-weak-experts-2023-7?r=US&amp;IR=T">experts previously told Insider</a>.It has also given China and Turkey less opposition there, Graham said.<div type="image" title="Destroyed buildings in Bakhmut Ukraine" height="1123" width="2000" msid="103468014" hostid="261" sizebytes="133512"></div>One example is the disillusioned reaction of CSTO member Armenia, which Russia declined to support with troops in its long-running border dispute with Azerbaijan.Graham said it was "not accidental" that Azerbaijan made the move when Russia was focused on Ukraine, sensing an opening.He said that "Russia's operation in Ukraine is undermining, eroding its ability to maintain its influence across the former Soviet space."And while these countries are still deeply reliant on Russia and unlikely to formally break any ties, things are changing."Counties of this region, given what's happening in Moscow, have incentives to look elsewhere," Graham said."You're seeing the slow erosion of Russian influence."

China is eroding Russia's influence over old allies as the alliance it leads crumbles over Ukraine, expert says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>More customers are taking action to fix problems they face from products or services.</li><li>The National Customer Rage Survey shows that 9% took "revenge" in the past year, up from 3%.</li></ul>Customer service isn't as good as it used to be, and many shoppers are seeking revenge.That's the takeaway from the latest National Customer Rage Survey, according to <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-customer-problems-hit-a-record-high-more-people-seek-revenge-2ab8fc74?mod=hp_lead_pos5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Wall Street Journal.</a> The survey found that 74% of customers reported running into a problem with a product or service within the last year. In 2020, that figure was 63%, and in 1976, it was just 32%. As consumers' gripes about everything from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/southwest-airlines-cancels-flights-holiday-metldown-2022-12">airline delays</a> to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/some-olaplex-users-say-hair-loss-damage-2023-1">hair care products</a> have grown, so have the portion of customers willing to do something about it. The survey found that 9% of those surveyed did something to get revenge against a company they felt had wronged them. In 2020, just 3% of customers said the same.The percentage of customers who sought revenge still was lower than in the recent past, the Journal reported. Between 2003 and 2017, an average of 17% of consumers said they did something to get even with a company after facing a problem.Posting on social media was a common tactic for those seeking revenge."Most people now are using a computer, they're using some form of social media at this point, there's a democratization of complaining," Scott Broetzmann, president and chief executive of Customer Care Measurement &amp; Consulting, told the Journal. Customer Care works with Arizona State University's W.P. Carey School of Business to conduct the study, which surveys 1,000 US consumers.Many companies have also moved their customer service options online and use automated systems instead of traditional call centers staffed by real people. While the companies believe it is more efficient and cheaper, customers find those options lacking in empathy, Broetzmann told the Journal.US consumers have become more unhappy with many companies over the last five years, according to the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, or ACSI. The Index measures how satisfied customers are with about 400 companies in a variety of sectors. Starting in 2018, the Index started a dive from 77 that year to 73.1 in 2022. It marked the largest decline in the Index's nearly three-decade history.Inflation and a three-year-long pandemic are factors in that decline, Claes Fornell, founder of the ACSI and a professor emeritus of business administration at the University of Michigan, said in a press release for the Index's <a href="https://www.theacsi.org/news-and-resources/press-releases/2023/02/08/press-release-national-acsi-q4-2022/">latest quarterly results.</a>But many businesses also lack the tools to measure their customers' satisfaction. At the same time, they are contending with employee turnover and not being able to hire enough people."It is difficult to generate high customer satisfaction under these circumstances," Fornell said.
