Chidambaram in his post on X said, "Please read the reports of the debate in the House of Commons when MPs questioned Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on his talks with Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi. Hard questions by the Opposition, prompt answers by the Prime Minister." "It is not important who prevailed in the debate. What is important is that a debate took place in Parliament within hours of the Prime Minister's return to Britain. How I wish such a debate took place in India's Parliament. Such questions and answers were normal in Parliament when Jawaharlal Nehru was prime minister," the former Union minister said. His remarks came after Sunak returned to the UK after attending the G20 Summit in India and answered the questions of opposition leaders. The Congress has been critical of the Modi government over not allowing debates in Parliament over important issues. The Congress has on previous occasions accused the government of not allowing the opposition members to speak in Parliament on several pressing issues.

"I especially like the solution for the camera to detect who is paying attention. Now what will happen you know, I will talk to my Speaker in Parliament and I am sure it will be very useful to Parliament," Modi said during the prize distribution ceremony at the Singapore-India Hackathon Event. The famous dozing MPs Napping in parliament has become a fairly common occurrence with at least one politician grabbing the limelight every season. HD Deve Gowda became infamous in his short stint as Prime Minister for regularly dozing off during Parliamentary sessions. But he was not the only one. Indian PM endorses IIT camera to catch inattentive MPs in Parliament

The Budget Session of <keyword id="6354721" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="parliament" source="Orion">Parliament</keyword> will commence on January 31 and end on April 6, according to an official statement. It will be the 259th session of the Rajya Sabha and the 11th session of the 17th <keyword id="6355187" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="Orion">Lok Sabha</keyword>. "The Eleventh Session of Seventeenth Lok Sabha will commence on Tuesday, the 31st January 2023. Subject to exigencies of Government Business, the Session is likely to conclude on Thursday, the 6th April 2023," a Lok Sabha secretariat notification said. A similar statement from the Rajya Sabha secretariat said the President has summoned the Rajya Sabha to meet on Tuesday, the 31st January 2023 at New Delhi and is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, the 6th April 2023. Parliament's Budget Session will begin from 11 am on January 31 with President Droupadi Murmu'<keyword id="16089537" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="s-address" source="Orion">s address</keyword> to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Budget Session of Parliament from January 31 to April 6

New Delhi [India], September 18 (ANI): The five-day special session of Parliament is all set to begin on Monday during which the parliamentary proceedings will shift from the old to the adjacent new state-of-the-art building on September 19. Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs <keyword id="221548" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pralhad-joshi" source="Orion">Pralhad Joshi</keyword> on Sunday stated that the Session will provide 5 sittings spread over a period of 5 days, besides informing that eight legislative items are likely to be taken up during this session. "Parliamentary journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha - achievements, experiences, memories and learnings" will also be discussed. On Sunday, Vice President <keyword id="7889551" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jagdeep-dhankhar" source="Orion">Jagdeep Dhankhar</keyword> hoisted the national flag atop "Gaja Dwar" of the new Parliament building. <keyword id="6355187" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="Orion">Lok Sabha</keyword> Speaker Om Birla was also present on the occasion. The Special Session of the Parliament will be held from September 18 to 22. The announcement of the Special Session came as a surprise in political circles with the parties gearing up for assembly polls in five states later this year. Meanwhile, four bills including a bill to regulate the appointment, conditions of service, and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners are part of the legislative business of the government for the session. Apart from the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, introduced in Rajya Sabha during the Monsoon session on August 10, the list includes 'The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023' and 'The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023', already passed by Rajya Sabha on August 3. The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023 amends the Advocates Act, 1961, while the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023 repeals the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867. Besides, 'The Post Office Bill, 2023' has also been listed in the Lok Sabha business. The bill was earlier introduced in Rajya Sabha on 10 August 2023 and it repeals the Indian Post Office Act, 1898. Special session of Parliament set to begin today

The just concluded winter session of <keyword id="145182" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Parliament">Indian parliament</keyword> will go down in the history for more reasons than one. It was just this time around that religious issues rocked the Parliament than anything else. Whether it was an inciting speech by a minister of state rank Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti or the opposition holding the Rajya Sabha at ransom over ‘ghar wapsi’ being carried out by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Sangh Parivar; the Parliament developed a deep gash during this session. 
 Opposition kept insisting that the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> addresses the Parliament over these issues. While Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> did give statement on the comments made by Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti, Ghar Wapsi was something he didn’t want to mess with. He stayed away even while the opposition parties demanded his explanation on the issue. 
 It isn’t that this is the first time Parliament went this bad over PM’s presence in the house. In December 2009, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stayed away from the Parliament for most of the session while the now ruling BJP sat in the opposition. Tables have turned now, with majority of BJP MPs occupying the seats. Though Congress and other parties have less or miniscule presence in <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword>, it was through the Rajya Sabha that the opposition parties decided to wield their swords over. 
 
In all, the winter session of the Parliament was a mix of controversy and passing of bills. Though the government managed to pass a number of legislations over some key bills that were aimed at reformation such as coal blocks allocation and insurance bill; the end result was a little less tangible than desired. 
 
The month-long session saw Lok Sabha set a record of sorts by passing 18 legislations in 22 sittings, including coal mines allocation and labour laws. 
 
A good three hours were lost owing to disruptions initially over Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti’s remark which left Prime Minister Modi more than red-faced. This over, the crucial time at Rajya Sabha was taken over by opposition creating ruckus over Sangh Parivar’s, perhaps badly-timed programme such as Ghar Wapsi where Muslims and Christians were brought back into the folds of Hindu religion, albeit clouded in grey shades. 
 
Though RS passed 12 bills through 22 sittings, 62 hours were lost over issues that involved religious conversions and bringing back the black money into India. 
 The reforms agenda suffered a major hit with insurance laws which were to raise the cap of FDI remaining pending. The coal mines bill that would have paved way for fresh coal blocks to be allocated in fresh auction following their de-allocation by <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> in the past also remained pending. 
 
With this, the government’s to-do list seems to have just gotten longer. This disruption, which isn’t new to Indian Parliament have given the government a huge blow on its economic-overhaul plans and subsequent measures. 
 
The government had listed over 37 bills to be passed during the session that just concluded enveloped in lots of bitterness. While this number was the target, legislators in both houses only managed to pass only 11 bills out of the entire lot. Lok Sabha worked more diligently than Rajya Sabha. 
 
The reason for this could also be that while Lok Sabha had more number of BJP MPs, with the opposition parties terming it the ‘arrogance of numbers’ with BJP having 282 seats in its kitty over 545 member assembly, the otherwise peaceful Rajya Sabha saw more number of disruptions, thus causing a lot of damage to the long term goals of the government. Congress holds 68 seats in the RS against the 43 seats in the house held by BJP. 
 The only time both opposition and ruling parties came together and unanimously said something was post <keyword id="42462" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Peshawar">Peshawar</keyword> attack where hundreds of school children were killed by extremist groups in Pakistan. All the parties unvaryingly condemned the 26/11 attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi being granted bail by a Pakistani court. The result of this was astounding. In a rare show of strength, Pakistan didn’t release Lakhvi and he was retained in the custody of Pakistan following Pakistan’s federal government approaching the Supreme Court challenging his bail.

New Delhi, Mar 12 () Parliament on Thursday passedamendments to the insolvency law that will help ring-fencesuccessful bidders of insolvent companies from risk ofcriminal proceedings for offences committed by previouspromoters.The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2020was passed by voice vote in Rajya Sabha. It was approved byLok Sabha on March 6.The Bill replaces an ordinance.Replying to a short debate on the bill, Finance MinisterNirmala Sitharaman said amendments are sync with time and alsoadhere to a Supreme Court order in "letter and spirit".The minister said need for amendment in the IBC arosebecause of "changing requirement" and "requirement of finetunning" the law as several MPs wanted to know why thegovernment was bringing in so many amendments to a new law.Stressing that the government is "very responsive" andhas been talking to the industry, she assured the House thatamendments to the IBC are are not being "unthinkingly done".The IBC, which came into force in 2016, has already beenamended thrice.Sitharaman said the government was taking care of theinterest of home buyers and the requirement of minimum numberof home buyers in the IBC has been included to avoid"frivolous litigations".The bill seeks to remove bottlenecks and streamline thecorporate insolvency resolution process. It aims to provideprotection to new owners of a loan defaulter company againstprosecution for misdeeds of previous owners.The latest changes pertain to various sections of the IBCas well as introduction of a new section.
