E-commerce channels are expected to capture 61 per cent of the overall sales, down from 66 per cent last year, according to Counterpoint Research. The smartphone retail average selling price (<keyword id="218869" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="asp" source="Orion">ASP</keyword>) during the festive season will grow 12 per cent to reach its highest ever at $242, although the unit sales may decline by 9 per cent (on-year). India's smartphone market is entering this festive season with the highest ever channel inventory of over 10 weeks, the report noted. "The festive season has been the highlight of India's smartphone market where almost 20 per cent of the annual sales happen over four-five weeks. Hence, this festive period is important for all the players in the value chain," said senior analyst <keyword id="9638737" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prachir-singh" source="Orion">Prachir Singh</keyword>. This year, the sales will start on September 23 with Amazon's Great India Festival and Flipkart's Big Billion Days. "According to our forecast, the festive season smartphone sales will account for around $7.7 billion, the highest ever. However, we estimate a 9 per cent YoY decline in terms of shipments. We have seen a similar trend in China's 618 festival this year, where shipments declined 10 per cent YoY," Singh noted. The festive shopping season will end with the Diwali sale. According to Research Director <keyword id="1943940" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tarun-pathak" source="Orion">Tarun Pathak</keyword>, the retail ASP (average selling price), similar to the total value, will be the highest ever and may record 12-15 per cent YoY growth. The consumer demand is likely to be high, especially in the mid-tier and premium segments. The various promotions and offers targeting the Rs 15,000 segments have already been announced by the brands and channels on social media. "The increasing affordability of these devices due to promotions and offers will drive their sales. This will be further supported by the 4G-to-5G migration. According to our estimates, one out of every three smartphones sold during the festive season will be a 5G smartphone," said <keyword id="6371466" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pathak" source="Orion">Pathak</keyword>. In terms of channels, the offline market players are pushing promotions and offers that are on par with their online counterparts. "The entry-tier and budget segments have witnessed a considerable decline in recent quarters. However, we expect these segments to grow during the festive season, though the growth may be limited as the consumers in these segments have been under pressure due to macroeconomic headwinds," Pathak added. India to see record smartphone sales worth ₹ 61,000 cr this festive season

As <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> prepares for the 5G era, the installed base of smartphones with 5G capabilities crossed 5 crore in the country, a report showed on Friday. The 5G smartphone shipment share reached 29 per cent of overall shipments in the second quarter (Q2), which was the highest ever. "The 5G spectrum auction and commercial availability will accelerate 5G smartphone adoption among users," said research analyst <keyword id="325148" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shilpi-jain" source="Orion">Shilpi Jain</keyword>. The government has reached new heights in introducing the 5G technology with an auction of over Rs 1.5 lakh crore for 5G spectrum. India's total smartphone installed base crossed 600 million (60 crore) during the April-June quarter as shipments grew 9 per cent (on-year) but fell 5 per cent (on-quarter) to reach almost 37 million units, according to latest research from Counterpoint's Market Monitor service. The annual growth was primarily driven by a lower base in Q2 2021 due to the second Covid-19 wave. The quarterly drop was due to macroeconomic headwinds affecting consumer demand. "Consumers are preferring to repair their device or buy a refurbished one rather than make a new purchase. This trend is more visible in the entry and budget segments. Due to this decline in demand, almost all the brands are facing inventory issues," said senior research analyst <keyword id="9638737" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="prachir-singh" source="Orion">Prachir Singh</keyword>. At the end of June, India's smartphone market was sitting on more than 10 weeks of inventory, more than double the normal inventory size. <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> grew 63 per cent (on-year) in Q2 driven by a smaller base in Q2 2021 due to the Covid second wave. It remained the top-selling brand in the ultra-premium segment. "The opening of its own e-store, <keyword id="6354606" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="iphone" source="Orion">iPhone</keyword> SE 2022 and offers on other models will further drive Apple's shipments in the coming quarters," the report mentioned. The smartphone retail ASP (average selling price) grew 10 per cent driven by an increasing share of the higher price segments. India's overall mobile handset market grew 6 per cent (on-year) but fell 9 per cent on quarterly basis. "Consumer demand started declining from the second quarter when the global economy was crippled by multiple macroeconomic issues like all-time high inflation, rising unemployment and geopolitical conflicts, affecting India's economy as well," said senior research analyst Prachir Singh. Inventory build-up across channels after the second quarter led to lower-than-expected shipments throughout the second half of the year. "We believe that the inventory and demand situation will continue to affect the market in the first half of 2023 before improving in the latter half driven by the festive season and upgrades to 5G devices," Singh added. India's smartphone shipments declined 9 percent YoY to reach over 152 million units in 2022, according to the report. The decline, which is the second ever in India's smartphone market, can be attributed to the decline in entry-level and budget segments which faced supply constraints at the beginning of the year and then witnessed lower demand throughout the year. "While entry-tier and budget segments were most affected, the premium segment remained immune and showed double-digit growth. OEMs' increased focus, consumers upgrading for premium features and, most importantly, availability of various financing schemes," said research analyst Shilpi Jain. Overall, India smartphone market revenue remained flat despite a 9 per cent YoY decline in shipments. OnePlus grew 50 percent YoY in 2022 driven by the OnePlus Nord CE 2 series. The beginning of the quarter saw a surge in demand across channels around the Republic Day sales period. India has a much larger proportion of its population in the lower percentiles of wealth. China has a higher concentration of wealthier citizens. As noted by analysts at Credit Suisse who compiled this data for 2022, India does have "significant" numbers of citizens in the upper echelons of wealth.But, overall, <a href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GNP.PCAP.PP.CD?locations=IN-US-GB-CN" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Indian citizens have less disposable income</a> than their counterparts in China, the US, or Europe, per World Bank data.They have less cash to spend on pricey gadgets — and they have historically been even more expensive in India.Apple's products have been available online in India for years, but are more expensive due to import fees and taxes. In 2022, the iPhone SE 2022 sold for a minimum of Rs 43,900, around $534, in India compared to around $380, around Rs 32,000, in the US, <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/technology/apple-tax-decoded-why-iphones-are-so-expensive-in-india-compared-to-other-countries-12845652.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per CNBC</a>.All of that suggests growth will be slow. Pricing may fall as Apple ramps up Indian manufacturing, and Indians are becoming increasingly willing to pay more for their phones."There was an increase of 18% in average selling price for the first 2 months of 2023 compared to the previous year," Counterpoint's Pathak said. "In 2022, the share of premium segment smartphones (&gt;INR 30,000 or around $360) has crossed the 10% mark for the first time, reaching 11%."Pathak added that financing schemes could also encourage Indians to buy iPhones.

New Delhi, June 15 (IANS) Online channels are likely to account for a highest-ever 45 per cent share of smartphone sales in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 situation as people would prefer to buy devices online to maintain social distancing, a new report has said. Among the online channels, Flipkart is likely to hold top position while Amazon will grow the fastest. "Xiaomi is likely to lead the online brand rankings while Realme will be the fastest-growing brand in the online space in 2020," according to the latest report from Counterpoint Research. In Q1 2020, Flipkart led the overall online market with a 50 per cent share but its shipments declined 7 per cent (YoY). However, Amazon grew in Q1 2020 with a 3 per cent (YoY) growth. "The Covid-19 crisis had little impact in the March-ending quarter. However, during the lockdown, the market has come to an almost complete standstill, massively impacting all aspects of the smartphone market including both online and offline channels," said Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst. While all sales volume is set to decline, sales through online channels will only decline by 5 per cent while sales through offline channels are expected to decline by 19 per cent. "This means the share of sales through online channels will reach around 45 per cent of total volume this year," Singh informed. In Q1 2020, Xiaomi remained the market leader in online channels with 48 per cent share, followed by Realme with 18 per cent share. Realme regained its top position on Flipkart. Among the top 10 online brands, Realme grew the fastest compared to the previous quarter. However, the brand is also expanding in offline channels. It registered 269 per cent (YoY) growth in the offline channel shipments, said the report. "Online channels remained strong during Q1 2020 due to multiple sales promotions on both Flipkart and Amazon. In terms of the price band, more than 60 per cent of the smartphone shipments on Flipkart were below Rs 10,000 while 80 per cent of the smartphones sold on Amazon were above Rs 10,000," informed Shilpi Jain, Research Analyst. Smartphone brands are hurriedly evolving their business models and updating channel strategies to cope with the new reality. "We have already seen multiple brands adopting an online to offline (O2O) model and hyperlocal delivery to help their offline channel partners," said Singh. It took <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> two years to end <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword>'s winning streak in the India smartphone market, as the South Korean major recaptured the top slot in the third quarter (July-September period) with 24 per cent share, as the Chinese major logged 23 per cent market share, a Counterpoint Research report said on Wednesday. Riding on multiple strategies -- including effective supply chain and touching various price points through new launches -- Samsung became the leading brand in the India smartphone market with 32 per cent (year-on-year) growth. Samsung was also the fastest to recover, surpassing the pre-COVID levels in Q3 2020, according to the latest research from Counterpoint's Market Monitor service. Samsung's aggressive push in online channels, with highest-ever online contribution within its portfolio, also helped it regain its number one spot, the report noted. Xiaomi slipped to number two position for the first time since Q3 2018 with 4 per cent YoY decline. "Manufacturing constraints due to the Covid-19 situation affected its supply chain, leading to a supply-demand gap," the report noted. Vivo with 16 per cent market share and Realme with 14 per cent share were third and fourth, respectively. Overall, India's smartphone shipments grew 9 per cent (YoY) to reach over 53 million units in Q3 2020 e the highest-ever shipment in a quarter. "In terms of price bands, the mid-tier (Rs 10,000-Rs 20,000) segment registered the highest growth and reached its highest ever share in a quarter," said senior research analyst Prachir Singh. In the overall handset market, Samsung was once again the leader with 22 per cent market share, followed by Xiaomi at 14 per cent share. The report said that with ramped-up manufacturing, strong demand for the Redmi 9 and Note 9 series, aggressive product strategy and growing offline presence, "we believe Xiaomi will come back strongly in the coming quarter". Vivo grew 4 per cent (YoY) and retained its third position in Q3, driven by strong demand for its Y-series models in offline channels. In Q3 2020, it entered the premium market with the X50 series and was the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to launch a gimbal camera that got positive feedback from consumers. "Though online channels remain in focus, OEMs are also trying to leverage new opportunities in offline channels in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities," said Research Analyst Shilpi Jain. New Delhi, July 4 (IANS) To compete with the growing share of Chinese players like Xiaomi and Vivo in the mid-budget segment, Samsung came up with a brand new, online-exclusive Galaxy M series for millennials as an online exclusive in January last year. In almost a year-and-a-half time span, the series has generated mass appeal in the affordable segment; writing a success story for the South Korean giant and helping it gain a substantial share in the online segment. What clicked for 'Galaxy M' series in India is simple: The company closely picked up insights from the young Indian millennials who shop online, and translated those inputs into 'Make in India' handsets that brought super sales, and are still doing the same with newer models. "We are entirely grateful to our consumers for the success of Galaxy M series in India. This success is an ode to the fact that M series was designed ground-up in India for the young Indian consumers and manufactured at our factory in Noida," Asim Warsi, Senior Vice President, Samsung India, told IANS. The whole Galaxy M series, in particular the Galaxy M30s device, performed well in the online segment last year, helping revive Samsung's online share. The company last month added two new products M11 and M01 to its M-series portfolio and M21 in the last quarter to taste the same success again which it got in 2019 due to M30s. According to Counterpoint Research, online channels are likely to account for a highest-ever 45 per cent share of smartphone sales in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 situation as people would prefer to buy devices online to maintain social distancing. "The 'M' series is doing quite well and helped Samsung in gaining share in online channels. Largest battery (6000mAh), powerful specs with strong value proposition are some of the factors which contributed to its success," said Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst, Counterpoint. Though the 'M' series was made available in the offline channel in small quantities, "it has remained online-heavy", Singh told IANS According to Warsi, the Galaxy 'M' series brand is a perfect reflection of its young owners, standing out as the most youthful, energetic and aspirational handset in the market. The USP of Galaxy 'M' brand is its powerful performance, coming through its industry-leading 6000mAh battery technology, the Super AMOLED Infinity-O display and the powerful Quad camera experience. "These next-generation features are available in the affordable segment below Rs 20,000. The combination of this monstrous feature stack at these affordable prices, truly make for a winning brand choice for our consumers," said Warsi. Going forward, Samsung is set to launch exciting new models under Galaxy 'M' series during the second half this year. "We will make sure that these new models are founded on forward-looking consumer insights that will pack-in the sort of powerful features that only the 'M' series have come to stand for in the industry," the Samsung executive told IANS. The exciting news to add here is that the new models in 'M' series would address a wider spectrum of young aspiring consumers, "whereby we would offer models below Rs 10,000 as well as in the above Rs 20,000 segment," announced Warsi. According to Singh, maintaining price parity across channels and aggressive marketing of its revamped portfolio can help Samsung in leveraging 'M' series in the upcoming festive season. Revamping the M-series and launching it in offline channels together with new schemes like Samsung Care+ helped the brand to further restore its position in the <keyword id="47445" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-market">Indian market</keyword>, according to Counterpoint Research's 'Market Monitor Service'. Samsung also has a diversified supply chain compared to its competitors, which helped it to maintain a steady flow of components. It was the first brand to reach almost full manufacturing capacity by the end of June, the report mentioned. "The contribution of Chinese brands fell to 72 per cent from 81 per cent in Q2 2020. This was mainly due to the mixture of stuttering supply for some major Chinese brands such as OPPO, Vivo and realme, and growing anti-China sentiment," said Shilpi Jain, Research Analyst at Counterpoint. It was compounded by stringent actions taken by the government to ban 59 apps of Chinese origin and delay the import of goods from China amid extra scrutiny. Overall, the smartphone market declined a massive 51 per cent (year-on-year) to just over 18 million in Q2 as April was a washout. The nationwide lockdown resulted in zero shipments during April. "The pandemic wiped out almost 40 days of production as well as the sales of smartphones due to the nation-wide lockdown. The quarter was marred by both demand and supply constraints which led OEMs to rethink their go-to-market strategies," said Prachir Singh, <keyword id="191938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="senior-research-analyst">Senior Research Analyst</keyword> at Counterpoint. In June, the smartphone shipments registered a mild decline of 0.3 per cent (YoY) thanks to the pent-up demand as well as a push from brands. Vivo with 17 per cent share at third spot was able to manage post lockdown demand well as it exited the quarter with 60 per cent pre-Covid levels. The launch of flagship V19 and adding more smartphones like Y50, Y30 to its Y-series portfolio helped the brand to recover fast in June. "Local manufacturing, R&amp;D operations, attractive value-for-money offerings and strong channel entrenchment by Chinese brands leaves very few options for consumers to choose from. Additionally, in the era of globalization, it is difficult to label a product based on country of origin as components are being sourced from many different countries," said Jain. Realme maintained the fourth spot though its share declined to 11 per cent as it faced manufacturing constraints due to the shutdown of the factory for almost all of May.
