The private sector lender saw a 127% growth in its credit card spends in August, compared to last year. On the other hand, SBI had to make peace with a much slower growth of 40%, as per the latest <a href="https://rbi.org.in/Scripts/ATMView.aspx">data</a> from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). <div type="image" title="icici bank stock." msid="86808665" hostid="261"></div> There are at least two reasons why ICICI Bank’s credit cards are getting swiped so often now. RBI had <a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachHis/893abfb4-95cb-4942-a555-312aef465ef4.pdf">banned</a> HDFC Bank from issuing credit cards in December last year due to multiple glitches in its digital banking system over the past two years. Even as the curb was lifted in August, it gave an opportunity to other lenders, including ICICI Bank, to grab credit card market share from HDFC Bank. <div type="image" title="hdfc bANK STOCK." msid="86808651" hostid="261"></div> “The growth in ICICI Bank credit card spends having surpassed SBI can also be attributed to higher spends per credit card due to quality of customers,” said Parijat Garg, an independent digital lending consultant. "Even as the number of cards issued by SBI and ICICI Bank have been largely similar, clearly ICICI Bank has seen higher credit card spends ahead of the festive season due to a better quality of customers that made higher-value transactions per card, compared to SBI customers,” he said. Among other lenders, IndusInd Bank Ltd. also saw its credit card spends more than double in August compared to last year, while market leader HDFC Bank Ltd. saw a 28% year-on-year increase. Compared to July, the preceding month, however, the growth seemed tepid as overall credit card spends grew just 4%. ICICI Bank leaves SBI behind in credit card spends as it chases HDFC Bank in pole position

<ul><li>IL&amp;FS auditor SRBC &amp; Co has resigned with effect from September 28.</li><li>The group’s board has appointed CNK Associates as the new auditor to the firm for fiscal 2022.</li><li>The development comes amid recent allegations of ‘professional misconduct’ against SRBC.</li></ul>Bankrupt infrastructure financier, Infrastructure Leasing &amp; Financial Services (IL&amp;FS), on Friday, said its statutory auditor SRBC &amp; Co has resigned with effect from September 28, 2021. “M/s SRBC and Co. LLP will be ineligible to continue as auditors of the Company for the financial year 2021-22 beyond September 30, 2021 having completed audits for three years,” it said in a stock exchange filing. The IL&amp;FS board has appointed CNK Associates as the new auditor to the firm for fiscal 2022. The development comes amid allegations of ‘professional misconduct’ against SRBC, as per an assessment by the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), part of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The NFRA reviewed the fiscal 2018 audit of IL&amp;FS Transportation Networks Ltd. (ITNL). In its September 23 audit quality review <a href="https://nfra.gov.in/sites/default/files/AQRR%20ITNL.pdf">report</a>, the government body alleged that SRBC, which used the EY logo and brand name in a misleading manner, and failed to provide adequate evidence supporting their assessment of the going concern status of ITNL. The 343-page NFRA report, in its assessment, further alleged that SRBC, <ul><li>Failed to disclose material facts known to them which are not disclosed in financial statements.</li><li>Failed to report a material misstatement known to them to appear in a financial statement.</li><li>Not exercised due diligence, or have been grossly negligent in the conduct of their professional duties</li></ul>Among other such allegations, NFRA concluded that SRBC did not perform the audit procedures in a consistent manner. “This renders the audit documentation completely unfit for the intended purpose. In not rectifying these deficiencies, the audit firm is guilty of serious professional misconduct,” it said. In 2018, debt-ridden IL&amp;FS group had gone bust creating a ripple effect in India’s shadow banking sector. Recently the IL&amp;FS board, led by billionaire banker Uday Kotak, said that it would resolve about 62% of the group's debt of nearly ₹99,000 crore, by the end of ongoing fiscal. As of April, the group has addressed debt worth ₹43,100 crore, short of its initial target to resolve about ₹50,000 crore by end of March. IL&FS replaces auditor SRBC & Co amid allegations of professional misconduct by NFRA

They present sustainable long-term growth opportunities for the Indian banking system,” said Rahul Shukla, group head – commercial and rural banking at HDFC Bank in a press <a href="https://www.hdfcbank.com/personal/about-us/news-room/press-release/2021/q3/hdfc-bank-to-double-its-rural-reach-to-2-lakh-villages-in-2-years">statement</a> on Sunday. The statement was issued by the bank on the same day when Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman prodded banks to expand their rural presence at an Indian Banks' Association event. "Even today many panchayats don't have a bank branch. I am not saying that you need to have a physical presence everywhere, digitisation has saved a lot of costs without compromising the service banks provide," she said on Sunday. As part of the plan, the lender also plans to hire 2,500 people over the next six months. The move, it said, will help the lender to expand its reach to one-third of rural India, while extending its leadership in lending to micro, small and medium enterprises. Currently, HDFC Bank offers its products and services to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in over 550 districts. As of June 30, the bank had close to half of its 5,653 branches in semi-urban and rural India, along with 15,912 banking correspondents. Of its total retail advances worth ₹5.23 lakh crore, Kisan Gold card formed close to 9% at ₹46,868 crore. The bank’s commercial and rural banking loan book, as of June 30, rose 25% year-on-year to ₹3.86 lakh crore. The growth in HDFC Bank’s stock price is also partly led by a strong market sentiment that has prevailed as the fear of an impending third COVID wave has weakened,” she said. The bank’s management, in its July earnings call, had also indicated that the lender is looking at “solid growth” in the ongoing financial year. “If I were to take any insights and share with you for the first 15 days trends for the month of July '21, HDFC Bank is echoing the projection of almost 100% of pre-COVID levels on the disbursement. And that gives me the optimism that in quarter two, which is July, August and September, we should be in a position to scale up rapidly on our growth rates,” said Arvind Kapil, the bank's country head for retail assets at HDFC Bank’s earning call in July. “...our assessment and our belief is that we should be back on course to achieve the original financial year plans and should close the year on a solid growth for the financial year,” he said. Last week, the bank said it would launch co-branded credit cards in partnership with Paytm. The launch, planned in October, it said will coincide with the festive season as the lender looks to tap into potentially higher consumer demand for credit card offers, EMIs and Buy Now Pay Later options, with the full suite of products to be on offer by the end of December. HDFC Bank is looking to hire 2,500 people in the next six months across India to double its rural cover

The development, reported by <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-09-26/invesco-renews-demand-for-zee-entertainment-board-reshuffle">Bloomberg</a> on Monday, said that Invesco and Oppenheimer Funds, in a September 23 letter, renewed their demand to convene an EGM to replace the board at Zee. A similar demand was made by Invesco on September 11. “A newly constituted board supported with the strength of independence will be best suited to evaluate and oversee the potential for strategic transactions,” according to the Sept. 23 letter from Aroon Balani, vice president of Invesco, as cited by Bloomberg. Earlier this month, the funds had also asked for the removal of Punit Goenka, the chief executive and managing director of Zee Entertainment, from the company’s board, citing issues with corporate governance at the firm. The letter also demanded removal of independent directors, Ashok Kurien and Manish Chokhani, who later resigned from the board. Despite Invesco’s letter, Zee went ahead and announced the company’s merger with Sony Pictures Networks India on September 22. Based on disclosures filed with exchanges, Sony will hold a majority stake of 52.93% in the merged entity and infuse growth capital of about $1.6 billion once the deal closes. Zee shareholders, post the deal, will hold the balance 47.07% in the merged entity. Zee Entertainment shares fall 3% in today’s trade as Invesco insists the board to hold EGM before Sony deal

Ltd. for indulging in cartelisation in the sale and supply of beer in the country between 2009 and 2018. The total fine is to <a href="https://www.cci.gov.in/press-release">the tune of ₹870 crore</a>, CCI said in a press release dated Sep. 24, that alleged three beer manufacturing firms ⁠— United Breweries, Anheuser Busch InBev India Ltd., and Carlsberg India were involved in cartelisation. While brokerage firm Motilal Oswal maintained a 'Sell' rating on the United Breweries stock, it flagged off the CCI decision as a "key investment risk." "There are no changes to our forecasts as we await clarity on the timeline for penalty payment as well as the management’s eventual decision on whether to appeal against the penalty," it said in a Sep. 24 note. United Breweries, it said, had a cash of <a href="https://www.cci.gov.in/press-release"></a>₹470 crore (net cash of ₹354 crore) at the end of fiscal 2021. "As per our current forecasts, it may have a net cash to pay the penalty of ₹752 crore by the end of fiscal 2022 (assuming that is the timeline) or else it may have to raise debt. United Breweries stock falls over 3% as CCI fines beer ‘cartel’ of Kingfisher and Carlsberg

<ul><li>The RBI and the Monetary Authority of Singapore have partnered to provide instant, low-cost cross-border fund transfers between both countries. </li><li>The project, which links Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and PayNow of Singapore, is expected to go live by July 2022. </li><li>Once operationalised, the linkage will further anchor trade, travel and remittance flows between the two countries.</li></ul>The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore have joined hands to link their immediate payment networks, which would allow individuals and businesses to make instant, low-cost fund transfers between both countries. The project, which links Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and PayNow of Singapore, is expected to go live by July 2022. Once operationalised, the linkage will further anchor trade, travel and remittance flows between the two countries. “The UPI-PayNow linkage is a significant milestone in the development of infrastructure for cross-border payments between India and Singapore, and closely aligns with the G20’s financial inclusion priorities of driving faster, cheaper and more transparent cross-border payments,” the RBI said in a press release on Sep. 14. G20, or the Group of 20, is a multilateral forum that focuses on international cooperation on international economic and financial agenda. India is a partner country to G20, but Singapore is not. The forum’s members account for more than 80% of world GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the world’s population. The linkage, it said, builds on the past efforts of the NPCI International Private Limited (NIPL) and Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS) to facilitate cross-border interoperability of payments using cards and QR codes, between India and Singapore. The initiative, it said, was also in-line with the RBI’s vision of reviewing corridors and charges for inbound cross-border remittances, as outlined in the <a href="https://rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=47045">Payment Systems Vision Document 2019-21</a>. UPI is India’s mobile based, 'fast payment' system that allows customers to make round the clock payments using a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) created by the customer, while PayNow is the fast payment system of Singapore which enables peer-to-peer funds transfer service.
