  • Chhattisgarh is selected for the ‘Cleanest State’ and Varanasi wins the ‘Cleanest Ganga Town’ honor at the said awards.
Indore’s position as the ‘Cleanest City” in India remains unchallenged for the fifth consecutive year as the city bags this most coveted title at the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2021. Chairing the ‘Swachh Amrit Mahotsav’ at New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhavan, President Ramnath Kovind presented a portfolio of awards to the cities and states recommended by the central government’s annual cleanliness survey under different categories.

Swachh Survekshan annual survey debuted in 2016 covering only 73 cities to start with. Growing over the years, the survey’s sixth edition in 2021 covered 4,320 cities in the country, making it the globe’s largest urban cleanliness survey.

The President said in his address, “On October 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Swachh Bharat Mission - Urban 2.0 with the goal of making all cities waste-free by 2026. It is obvious that a garbage-free city requires houses, streets and localities to remain garbage-free. The responsibility of the success of this campaign lies with the government as well as all the citizens. We have to ensure that everyone segregates wet and dry waste at home.”

Indore rules the scene as the cleanest city for the fifth consecutive year while the second and third places are awarded to Surat and Vijayawada respectively in the category of cities with a population more than a million. Navi Mumbai claims the fourth place and Pune occupies the fifth place as cleanest cities. The other cities that have managed to find a place among the top ten cleanest cities in the country are Raipur, Bhopal, Vadodara, Visakhapatnam, and Ahmedabad from sixth to tenth places in the order.

In the category of cities with population below 1 million, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been declared the cleanest city, placing Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur and Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati in the second and third places. Among the cities with a population between 1 lakh and 3 lakh, the NDMC region also ranks first by winning the title, “India’s cleanest small city”.

Chhattisgarh is given the ‘Cleanest State’ title in India among the states that have more than 100 urban local bodies. The next few places in this list are scored by Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat in the descending order.

In the category of states with less than 100 ULBs, Jharkhand is chosen as the cleanest state, the honor which it claims for the second time. The second and third places in this category are won by Haryana and Goa. In this list, Meghalaya is seen at the bottom.

Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri congratulated the various stakeholders responsible for Indore’s success in winning the cleanest city title. He tweeted, “Indore is India’s cleanest city for the 5th year in a row. Heartiest congratulations to the people, political leadership, Municipal Corporation, Swachhagrahis & Safaimitras for their exemplary commitment towards keeping the city on top.”
