A Louisiana teenager who graduated high school last week is now missing after going overboard a sunset cruise in the Bahamas while on a post-grad trip, according to school officials and local authorities.
Cameron Robbins, an 18-year-old recent graduate of University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, was traveling with several fellow seniors to the Bahamas this week when an ocean excursion went awry, Abbi Rocha Laymoun, a spokesperson with Louisiana State University, which oversees the University Laboratory School, confirmed to Insider.
"The group was full of graduating seniors from the Baton Rouge area visiting Atlantis, on Paradise Island," Laymoun said.
The trip was not an official school-sanctioned vacation.
Robbins went overboard a small sunset cruise around 9:40 p.m. local time near Athol Island, according to a statement from the Royal Bahamas Defense Force obtained by $4 The Bahamanian police force did not respond to Insider's request for comment.
The US Coast Guard $4 that its crews were assisting local officials in the search for Robbins.
The Royal Bahamas Defense Force told $4 that it was looking into claims that the teenager went into the water on a dare. The boat reportedly stayed in the area for hours as officials searched for Robbins.
WBRZ said it obtained video that appeared to show Robbins swimming in the dark waters alongside the cruise boat next to a life preserver, but the outlet did not publish the footage.
Kevin George, director of the University Laboratory School, told WBRZ that Robbins is a "special kid."
"He's an athlete, great kid, great smile, great head of hair. Just one of the kids you're so proud of when they cross the stage," George said.
In a statement to Insider, George said the school is praying for the best possible outcome.
"I have been in touch with Cameron's family and at this time, authorities are still searching for him in the Bahamas," George said. "Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well."
