George Conway says Ron DeSantis may be the only person positioned to prevent Trump from snagging the 2024 GOP nomination
  • George Conway said Ron DeSantis might be the only GOP figure with a chance of beating Donald Trump.
  • Conway said Trump might announce a run soon to try to keep donors from backing other GOP candidates.

One of Donald Trump's most outspoken conservative critics says he thinks Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida is the only GOP candidate who stands a chance of defeating Trump should the former president run again in 2024.

The lawyer George Conway made the remarks Saturday during $4 Conway gained a high profile $4 while $4, a longtime member of Trump's administration.

During the segment, the host Anderson Cooper asked Conway whether he thought Trump would announce a presidential run before the 2022 midterms, to which Conway said it was "absolutely" possible.

"I think he understands that he can deter people from running, and he's going to end up freezing donors from giving money to other people," Conway said.

He added that donors were likely to think twice about spending money on other candidates if Trump were "probably going to win."

"The only way he gets beaten for the nomination is if maybe somebody is able to run a one-on-one campaign against him, probably DeSantis," Conway said, adding that it's "quite possible" that DeSantis make a presidential bid, which he has yet to do.

Conway also highlighted how a crowded primary field might benefit Trump, as it did in 2016. He also told Cooper he thought Trump was "definitely going to announce" a run soon.

"I think he can't help himself," Conway said. "I think that he thinks that this is his way of undermining the investigation against him and immunizing himself against the investigation by saying: 'Oh, this is all political. Look at this. They want to stop me from winning and becoming president again, and I'm going to save the country and so on and so forth.'"

The idea of a Trump 2024 run has long been a popular point of speculation. A former House GOP staffer, $4, recently said he thought Trump was likely to announce a campaign soon because the former president had "the impulse control of a freaking toddler." And as early as October, $4 said he was willing to bet all the money he had that Trump would run again in 2024.

$4 reported this month that Trump had been $4, discussing the midterms and the likelihood he might run in the next election. In the meantime, Trump is $4.

$4 that Trump considered announcing his 2024 bid on July 4 but nixed the plan.

Both DeSantis and Trump are $4 for the 2024 presidential ticket, though neither has formally declared an intention to run. A DeSantis representative $4 that DeSantis remained "focused on Florida and running for reelection as governor this year."

Trump has $4. In January, a video emerged that showed Trump calling himself the "$4."
