Jio is reportedly gearing up to launch a4G laptop in India. - The 4G-enabled laptop will reportedly be priced at $184 (approx. ₹15,000).
- Jio has reportedly partnered with Qualcomm and Microsoft for the device.
According to a report by Reuters, Reliance Jio is working on an affordable 4G-enabled laptop priced at $184 (approx. ₹15,000). The device will reportedly come with an embedded Jio 4G SIM card. Jio has been working on the JioBook for quite some time now, and a report in 2021 revealed a few specifications of the device.
Reliance Jio has partnered with Qualcomm and Microsoft for the JioBook. While Qualcomm will provide the Indian telco with chipsets for the device, Microsoft is expected to offer support for some of the applications.
The report adds that the JioBook may be made available to enterprise customers such as schools and government institutions from as early as this month.
A larger commercial launch is expected to occur in the next three months. As per the source, while the company will initially launch a 4G enabled laptop, a 5G version will be unveiled later.
Interestingly, this news comes just days after Jio and Airtel announced the launch of 5G services in the country. While Airtel’s 5G services have already been launched, Jio is expected to begin its rollout around Diwali.
"This will be as big as JioPhone," a source familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The JioPhone was the company’s affordable 4G phone that became a huge success soon after its launch as it was the most affordable 4G phone.
In addition to a 4G laptop, the Mukesh Ambani-led company is currently also working on launching an affordable 5G smartphone.
The JioBook will reportedly be produced in India by contract manufacturer Flex. Jio reportedly aims to sell "hundreds of thousands" of units of the JioBook by March 2023.
“There are cheaper chrome books as well. Challenges for the adoption will be user awareness and learning curve especially for the first time laptop users. Also non-windows is a let down too but one thing Jio can overcome here is the connectivity and software ecosystem, that wasn't working in favor of chromebooks,” said Tarun Pathak, research director of Counterpoint Research.
The JioBook will reportedly run on the company’s operating system, JioOS.
An earlier report had suggested that the JioBook will be equipped with the Snapdragon 665 chipset and offer up to 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
We should know more about the JioBook in the coming days.
