Amazon tests Prime Lite membership in India, a cheaper alternative to Prime — here’s how it's different

After Netflix, Amazon Prime is all set to introduce a cheaper and ad-supported plan.
Prime Lite membership will be available for ₹999 per year.
Prime Lite will not offer access to Amazon Prime Music.

E-commerce giant Amazon is testing a new Prime subscription model for users in India. Dubbed as Prime Lite, the new subscription is available to selected Prime members in the country as a Beta version, with an introductory price of ₹999 per year.

Amazon’s Prime membership has been available in India since 2016. It was priced at ₹999 a year for some time, though the company has increased the pricing to ₹1,499 for a year. Meanwhile, the monthly pricing was increased by nearly 39 percent from ₹129 to ₹179. Now, the new Lite Prime subscription model will come at ₹999 and will be slightly different from Amazon Prime in terms of the benefits and services offered.

Prime vs Prime Lite membership

Unlike Amazon Prime's same-day or one-day delivery service, Prime Lite offers two-day product delivery. For Prime Video, Prime Lite users can access unlimited content, similar to Amazon Prime. However, the content will not be available in HD format and will come with ads.

While Prime Lite offers similar services and benefits to Amazon Prime, there is one major difference. Users will not have access to Amazon Prime Music on the Prime Lite membership. Also, they will not have access to no-cost EMI, Prime Gaming, or free ebooks.
