<ul><li>Global tech CEOs have been voicing their concerns against India’s proposed <keyword id="2617070" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Personal-Data-Protection-Bill">Personal Data Protection Bill</keyword> to looks to localise the data of Indian users. </li><li><keyword id="300740" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ginni-Rometty">Ginni Rometty</keyword>, the CEO of IBM, and data firms like Cognizant and <keyword id="25698" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Genpact">Genpact</keyword> are only the most recent companies to flag the potential issues with the bill. </li><li>CEOs of other global companies like Google, Mastercard, Twitter and Qualcomm also have concerns with how the bill will be implemented. </li></ul>The Indian government has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/gdr-compliant-firms-should-find-it-easy-to-adhere-to-proposed-data-protection-bill-in-india/articleshow/65198854.cms">pushing for data localisation</a> in India but companies around the world have their doubts about its efficiency and clarity. The Draft Personal Data Protection Bill suggests that the personal data of Indian users should be held by digital and global firms within and processed only in India. But, global CEOs have been<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/groups-of-foreign-companies-are-lobbying-against-indias-personal-data-protection-bill/articleshow/66070718.cms"> making a case</a> for how hindering the free flow of data across borders might have “unintended consequences”. One concern is that the regulations that govern the privacy of data should be able to differentiate between user data and data from businesses. Ginni Rometty, the CEO of IBM, said, “We believe strongly in consumer privacy and you have to be careful to not conflate consumer data issues with business-to-business data issues,” in an <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/differentiate-between-consumer-biz-data-ginni-rometty-ibm-ceo/articleshow/68384341.cms">interview</a> with the Economic Times on Tuesday. Cognizant remarked, “Complying with changing regulatory requirements requires us to incur substantial costs, exposes us to potential regulatory action or litigation, and may require changes to our business practices in certain jurisdictions, any of which could materially adversely affect our business operations and operating results.” Genpact also told the SEC, “Evolving laws and regulations in India protecting the use of personal information could also impact our engagements with clients, vendors and employees in India.” Google’s CEO, Sunder Pichai, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/heres-what-sundar-pichai-had-to-say-to-the-indian-government/articleshow/65756506.cms">addressed</a> the issue more directly warning the government of the effect that it may have on the ‘Digital India’ program in the country.

 But, some companies believe that the conversation shouldn’t be about localisation in the first place, but about ownership. <keyword id="265395" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jack-Dorsey">Jack Dorsey</keyword>, the CEO of Twitter, feels that regardless of whether the data sits in India or outside India, individuals should be the ones with absolute control over their information.

 Facebook’s deputy chief privacy officer, Rob Sherman, did make an <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/info-tech/social-media/centralised-platform-needed-for-data-privacy-laws-facebook/article24884483.ece">suggest</a> an alternative approach to the problem of data localisation in India at the panel discussion on ‘Digital lows in the Digital Age’. Rather than localise data, the Indian could put a certification process in place instead where digital companies should fulfill the required standards to ensure protection and privacy rather than set up local servers in India to store Indian users data. But there’s also an <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/qualcomm-opposes-blanket-rule-on-data-localisation/67414442">argument</a> to be made about how changing technology which, in turn, would make any new regulations obsolete when new technology comes into play. Qualcomm’s president, Christiano Amon, notes, “Certain things can be centralised, certain things can be localised, but you can't really have a rule that mandates this.” Sharing Banga’s concerns about the safety of data Amon said, “A regulation like that instead of helping, prevents a company from becoming competitive and make use of the technology…One possible approach is to make sure that the systems they're using, the data are secure.”

Referral systems are slowly becoming companies’ favourite way of hiring new people, since it involves asking its own employees to recommend candidates, making sure that only worthy candidates appear for the interview. In turn, employees get rewarded. 
 A majority of Indian companies are now using top technology for referral hires, since it involves lesser time and also increases employee’s sense of belongingness with the company. "Nearly 55% of talent leaders see <keyword id="2813966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="employee-referral-programmes">employee referral programmes</keyword> as the top source of quality hire," Irfan Abdulla, director, talent solutions, LinkedIn India, told ET. 
 
Top companies going the referral way for hiring include Coca-Cola, Infosys, Genpact, Capgemini, Deloitte, and Jubilant etc, with the mentioned names reporting hiring over 40% of their workforce through referrals. 
 
When it comes to rewarding employees for successful referrals, companies are paying more to employees who recommend more women for roles, which also helps in bridging the gender gap in company’s workforce. 
 
For example, Capgemini has launched 'recruitHER' for employees to upload profiles of female candidates to be eligible for a lucky draw. Coca-Cola also boasts of 31% women associates since they place a 15-20% premium on female candidates that get hired through referrals. 
 
While some companies pay referrals in terms of cash, there are some companies that like to give out gifts like kindles and external hard disks in case employees refer someone who makes it to the workforce.

A report from the commercial data information and analytics firm Propstack has said that India’s top seven markets absorbed considerable <keyword id="35279" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="commercial-real-estate">commercial real estate</keyword> with both outright purchases and leasing of office space. This has upped the commercial real estate to 5.8 million square feet during the Q1 of 2016, seeing a rise of 8% from a year ago. 
 
Last year, renewed corporate confidence amid steady economic growth brightened the scene of commercial real estate. The trend has continued this year as well, indicating economy's health and scope of job creation. 
 
The quarter saw commercial real estate transactions going up 23%, with demands being led by companies in BFSI (banking, financial service and insurance), e-commerce and IT/ITeS sectors. 
 
It also saw some significant deals, including those of WNS in Mumbai, UBS at Pune, ADP in Hyderabad and Genpact in Gurgaon. 
 
"If the current momentum continues, 2016 could well be a record year for office space absorption in India. Commercial real estate is clearly reflecting the mood on business front and based on the pipeline for office space demand we are heading towards registering a strong year," Seetharaman said. 
 
The top seven markets include Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. 
 
As per the Propstack report, most of these cities showed a steady growth in rents in the quarter that went by, except Kolkata. Talking in exact figures, Pune led the pack with 6.9% rise, followed by Bengaluru’s 5.7% and Delhi-NCR’s 2.8% growth. While Chennai and Mumbai saw marginal rises of 2.6% and 1.2%, Hyderabad saw a rise of 1.4%.

Commercial real estate on a rise in India, upped 8% from last year

As PC sales fall worldwide, Dell is looking to transition into both a services company - offering software support, among other things - and diversify into other hardware areas, such as storage. EMC has revenues of <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/790070/000079007015000062/emc-2014123110xk.htm">$24 billion (£15 billion) per year</a>. Dell is selling a $5 billion part of its business to help fund a $67 billion megadeal

New Delhi, Jan 12 () The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has convened a meeting of industry representatives from IT and e-commerce sectors on January 14 to discuss the merits and de-merits of draft e-commerce policy on data storage, sources said.
Representatives from different companies including Accenture, Adobe, Facebok, Genpact, Google, HCL, Infosys, Intel, Microsoft and TCS are expected to participate in the deliberations, they said.
Besides, officials from Nasscom, E-commerce Council of India, Informational Technology Industry Council, CII and FICCI would also attend the meeting, they added.
The meeting will be chaired by an additional secretary level officer of the DPIIT.
The meeting assumes significance as the department is working to release the national e-commerce policy by the end of the current financial year.
The government in February last year released a draft national e-commerce policy, proposing setting up a legal and technological framework for restrictions on cross-border data flow and also laid out conditions for businesses regarding collection or processing of sensitive data locally and storing it abroad.
Several foreign e-commerce firms have raised concerns over some points in the draft pertaining to data.
The department has received huge response on the draft and it is examining all the views and comments.
As the draft policy includes several provisions related to data, the department is also looking at the Personal Data Protection Bill approved by the Cabinet last month.
Further, sources said that issues which needs to be looked upon include whether India should allow free flow of data across the border or inhibit or regulate it in some manner; and whether data localisation is required or not.
"These are the issues which have lot of pros and cons," they added.
The Personal Data Protection Bill spells out a framework for handling of personal data including its processing by public and private entities.
A company may have to pay a penalty if found violating norms under the Personal Data Protection Bill. RR

"If these issues are not resolved immediately a work stoppage will be enacted," said the message. "Some employees have had to take out payday loans just so they could have enough money to buy food for their children," an unnamed employee was quoted as saying. Facebook did confirm the disruption and said that Accenture has notified its employees of this issue "and is working to resolve it as soon as possible." Accenture said that it has not seen "any indication of coordinated work stoppage at the site". "We recently switched payroll providers and experienced some unanticipated challenges during our first payroll run with the new provider," a company spokesperson told The Verge. "We continue encouraging our people who need assistance to reach out to their supervisor or HR, so we can help them resolve." Facebook hired several firms like Accenture, Cognizant, Genpact and ProUnlimited to help it moderate and remove harmful content in the aftermath of the 2016 US presidential election and Cambridge Analytica data scandal.
