As per his LinkedIn profile, Ajay Shekhar Sharma has been the chief business officer of marketing cloud business at Paytm since August this year. Paytm’s cloud business offers cloud services to telecom companies and enterprises. He has been associated with Paytm for over a decade. He started off his journey as a manager of sales and served as senior vice president before being promoted last month. In the preliminary paperwork for Paytm’s $2.2 billion IPO, Ajay Shekhar Sharma was mentioned as a relative of Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who owned interest in the voting power of the company. This gave him “control” and “significant influence” in the company. Paytm’s parent company One 97 Communications ⁠— which started 21 years ago as a payments company and then went to add a payments bank, trading platform, online retail and games to its business ⁠— is looking to raise $2.2 billion through its IPO, reportedly at a valuation of $25-30 billion. About half of this money will be raised through fresh issue while the rest will be a secondary issue that will offer partial exits to some of Paytm’s investors. The Noida-based company reported a consolidated revenue of ₹3,186.8 crore in the fiscal year that ended in March 2021. This was nearly a ₹353 crore reduction from the revenue reported in FY2020. Paytm also cut its losses to ₹1,701 crore in FY2021, compared to ₹2942 crore reported in FY2020. The round also saw participation from Artha Venture Fund, Ajay Kaul – former CEO of Domino’s India, and VSS Investco – the investment vertical of Paytm CEO <keyword id="914589" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vijay-shekhar" source="Orion">Vijay Shekhar</keyword> Sharma. Founded by former Paytm employees Prerna Kalra and Vidya Bhushan in 2017, Daalchini is an IoT-enabled ‘phygital’ (physical+digital) vending machine provider that serves more than 100 start-ups, co-working spaces, large MNCs, hospitals, educational institutes, and residential complexes. It is present in over 20 cities in India and has more than 200 franchise partners and over 160 brands selling on its platform. Now, after its recent funding round, Daalchini will focus on expanding its industry footprint and furthering its tech capabilities. It is targeting to be present across 10 million retail points in India and 450+ F&amp;B D2C brands. Daalchini has grown 300% in the last 12 months with ₹12 crores revenue in FY2022. More than 90% of its vending machines are EBITA positive within 45 days, it said. Daalchini aims to clock ₹50 crores in revenues with a Gross Merchandise Value of ₹130 crores in 12 months. It is planning to grow from 850+ to over 5,000 smart and autonomous retail points in the next 12-18 months. “The retail-tech segment in India is going through a massive transition from its traditional physical store form to a digital one, the speed of which has been intensified by the pandemic. In this phase, Daalchini represents the best of both worlds with a ubiquitous physical presence backed by a strong technological framework that prioritises its customers’ needs and convenience,” said Ruchi Pincha, Investment Associate, Unicorn India Ventures. Daalchini has tied up with leading companies like Reliance, Aditya Birla Group’s Hindalco, Vodafone, GE, Genpact, NITI Aayog, Housr, MX Player, Samsung, Paytm, Snapdeal, Byjus, EY, OLX, OYO, Loreal and VIVO, among others. “Daalchini aims to establish its footprints at every 200 metres of habitable area with its autonomous smart stores and vending machines. Today, our country has just a few thousand vending machines, while the US or Japan has more than one autonomous store for every 200 people. We are far from the true potential of this kind of retail,” said Kalra, who is also the CEO of Daalchini Technologies. According to the <a href="https://www.kearney.com/consumer-retail/article/-/insights/value-ecommerce-the-next-big-leap-in-india-retail-market">Kearney India Retail Index</a>, the retail industry, dominated by the food and groceries sector, will grow at a 9% rate from $779 billion in 2019 to $1.4 trillion in 2026 and reach $1.9 trillion by 2030. Despite the pandemic, research finds that the industry has and will continue to grow on the back of value e-commerce and an unprecedented reach across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

Retail-tech startup Daalchini raises $4 million in a round led by Unicorn India Ventures

Chennai-headquartered <keyword id="6361043" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="software" source="Orion">software</keyword> company Zoho intends to take Gen AI in-house and is currently developing Learning Language Models (LLMs) which can converse, summarise, paraphrase and adapt to new tasks with zero-shot learning techniques for AI-driven communication and discovery, Ramprakash Ramamoorthy, Director of AI Research at the company told PTI. He feels that AI itself cannot displace someone from a job but an individual with access to AI can. "While laws of the land are still catching up, today most AI development is self-regulated. Given that this involves sensitive, private information, companies deploying AI must have a strong moral stand when building this technology," he said. Vijay Shekhar Sharma, the Founder and CEO of Paytm expressed concern over the power amassed by some people and countries. "Here is OpenAI blog post done this week: In less than 7 years we have a system that may lead to disempowerment of humanity and even human extinction," he tweeted. "Organisations will need to balance business advantages with societal impact," he added. Ajay Kumar, the CEO of Bangalore-based technology services provider SLK shares that there is a dot com and mobility boom-like excitement among entrepreneurs, making it difficult to keep pace with advancements. "Amidst all this excitement of creating new business models and securing financial valuations, we have to ensure data privacy and proper ethical standards so that technology works for all of us," he pointed. Sonya Ahuja, Founder and COO of edtech Imarticus Learning said, "Recognising the recent volatility in edtech platforms and layoff concerns, disruption in the industry, technological advancement should go hand in hand with upskilling and reskilling initiatives." E-learning startup Physics Wallah has an AI-powered "Ask Doubt" tool that suggests related doubts and provides guidance to students using its database. Chief Technology Officer Devesh Mishra encourages human-controlled, transparent AI to "maintain the human touch". "Technology should complement and enhance human capabilities rather than replace or undermine them," he added. San Francisco-based transcription tool Fireflies.ai is working on personalised note taking. Their ChatGPT-like assistant AskFred pulls up answers using the notes repository. Krish Ramineni, CEO of Fireflies.ai feels organisations which fail to adopt transformative technologies will struggle to keep pace with early adopters. He sees AI like a calculator or Excel-like tool which makes work faster. "AI can crunch numbers, provide projections, and suggest areas for improvement. However, when it comes to building trust and closing deals, nothing beats the human touch," he added. San Mateo-based Yellow.ai aims to democratise technology on its platform by supporting local and regional languages. CEO and co-founder of Yellow.ai Raghu Ravinutala notes that entrepreneurs should proactively address the impact of automation on jobs. "While technological advancements may lead to job displacement in certain sectors, entrepreneurs should invest in retraining to ensure smooth workforce transition," he notes. Sam Altman, founder and CEO of ChatGPT developer OpenAI was among 350 signatories of the Center for AI Safety statement for reducing the risk of human extinction from AI. Amit Das, Founder and CEO of Mumbai-based IT services provider Think360.ai observes, one is scared of what they do not fully understand, in the short-term. "While mass-market AI like ChatGPT is exciting and scary at the same time, task automation will make way for innovations," he added. Soham Chokshi, CEO and co-founder of AI-powered logistics company Shipsy feels technology should empower the workforce.
