But cyberattacks can be much more costly to an organization's bottom line and its reputation, Boyer said.<h2 id="c6454cb6-2ed4-4a3e-8923-2f759517c2ba">What cyber insurance does and doesn't cover</h2>Many policies offer first- and third-party coverage, and most companies need both, Engstrom said.While all policies are different, first-party insurance typically covers losses incurred because of a cyberattack. According to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/small-businesses/cybersecurity/cyber-insurance">Federal Trade Commission</a>, it can also cover costs such as legal counsel, forensic-investigation services, recovery of stolen data, communication with customers, fees and penalties to regulatory bodies, crisis management, public relations, and lost income.Some policies also cover ransomware negotiation and payments to hackers. However, Wolff said this is a controversial aspect of cyber insurance, as many believe it incentivizes criminals to continue launching attacks.Engstrom said third-party insurance covers legal fees and settlement costs when a customer, a vendor, or another third party seeks legal damages as a result of a cybersecurity incident."Companies that are at risk of a cybersecurity incident are almost always at risk of a related third-party conflict," she added.Boyer told BI that cyber insurance usually doesn't cover losses related to intellectual property or preexisting cybersecurity incidents. Acts of war or attacks related to terrorism, which typically affect high-level companies and organizations, are also not covered, Wolff said.Additionally, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ibm.com/topics/cyber-insurance">IBM</a>, attacks caused by network failures, negligent or malicious employees, or social engineering, such as phishing scams, might not be covered.Engstrom said the policies also typically don't cover the cost of hiring more security or IT staff or upgrading cybersecurity systems to prevent attacks."Many don't realize that these long-term structural and preventative improvements are not covered under most cybersecurity-insurance policies," she added.<h2 id="3ec2bff8-ffa8-4c28-9e6a-8cdb3b73a14a">What to look for in a cyber-insurance policy</h2>Policies differ depending on the insurer, Wolff said, and companies can sometimes negotiate their coverage. So it's crucial to ask a lot of questions before signing on."One really important thing to go through with your carrier is the specific exclusions in your policy," she added. "The more you can get into the specifics of that, the less likely you are to be taken by surprise when you're trying to file a claim."Basically, make sure the policy adequately covers your level of risk, Engstrom said.Wolff suggested discussing how pricing is determined and which cybersecurity measures insurers require companies to have — some might offer lower pricing for companies with upgraded cybersecurity infrastructure.Some insurance companies also offer training or support to educate an organization's staff on cybersecurity best practices, Engstrom added.She said to also find out about the claims process: "If a company experiences a cybersecurity incident, they must understand how their insurer steps in and what kind of support is provided. Leaders need to know that their insurance company is there for them every step of the way."Ultimately, companies should understand their cyber risks and know what protection they need when purchasing insurance, Boyer said."What are you trying to protect, and what's the risk transfer?" he said. "It obviously depends on your business — some businesses are just more exposed to this sort of risk and could really have some sort of payout."

Companies without cyber insurance could be making a costly mistake

This ruling significantly expands the scope of the law to address the evolving challenges posed by digital platforms. <h2>A wider net</h2>In its ruling, a bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice J.B. Pardiwala stated, "Any act of viewing, distributing, or displaying child pornographic material by a person over the internet without any actual or physical possession or storage of such material in any device or in any form or manner would also amount to 'possession' in terms of Section 15 of POCSO Act." This interpretation effectively settled conflicting verdicts from various high courts, notably overturning a Madras High Court decision that had quashed a POCSO case against an individual who had viewed child pornography but had not circulated it. The Supreme Court, in agreeing with senior advocate H.S. Phoolka's arguments, deemed the earlier judgement "egregiously erroneous." <h2>Crimes categorised</h2>In a further clarification, the Supreme Court divided crimes related to child pornography under Section 15 of the POCSO Act into three distinct categories. The decision emphasised that law enforcement and courts must carefully assess each case to determine the specific category under which an offence falls. One critical insight from the judgement is that an offender cannot escape prosecution by simply deleting illegal content before an FIR is registered. To address this, the court created a safeguard for those unaware of the offensive material stored on their devices. If a person discovers such material on their device through automatic downloads, they will not be prosecuted if they take immediate steps to delete it and report it to the authorities. However, the onus is on the device owner to act swiftly. Failure to delete or report the offensive material after becoming aware of it would constitute an offence under the law. To avoid the automatic downloading of problematic material, there are several proactive measures you can take. First, adjust your browser settings to disable automatic downloads and pop-ups, ensuring you have to approve any file before it is downloaded to your device. Alltech says on its website that "more than 1,000 companies" rely on its services to connect them with tech professionals. Business Insider hasn't been able to verify this independently. BI also contacted the company by calling its main phone number, sending direct LinkedIn messages to its executives, and emailing its main email address. When contacted through its public email and phone number, Alltech didn't respond to requests for comment from BI. Two Alltech executives, listed as the company's owner and vice president on LinkedIn, told Business Insider in direct messages they weren't aware of anyunsecured data or a breach. Fowler said the data exposed included email addresses, passport numbers, the last four digits of SSNs, and information on work visas. "The records also contained internal notes about their experience, qualifications, and type of job they are looking for," Fowler said. Business Insider has reviewed the message Fowler sent to three Alltech email addresses on September 10 disclosing the unprotected data. Miller and Fowler said that the type of information left exposed by the database, including the last four digits of a Social Security number, could allow a cybercriminal to impersonate a person. "You're looking toward identify theft," Miller said. "Details like names, work history, your visa status, passport numbers, even parts of your Social Security number, allow for bad actors to piece together enough information to steal identities and create fraudulent profiles." Fowler added that incidents like Alltech's — and others he investigates — highlight how important it is for companies to protect their data. "It also serves as a wake-up call to the industry to review their data security practices and identify vulnerabilities to protect their internal systems and the personal information of the individuals they serve," Fowler said. Alltech's website says it was founded in 1998. It's unclear why Alltech collected job seekers' Social Security or passport information. Or, according to one cyber-security expert, helping potential hackers access their information.It's all down to a popular template of 11 questions that people are answering on Instagram, freely giving away personal information like their height and date of birth, and various details about things they feel strongly about, including favorite food and phobias.The trend appears to have gained traction in late December, although similar templates have circulated on different platforms pretty much since the advent of social media itself.It's unclear how widespread the latest iteration is, as most users appear to be posting their answers on Instagram stories, which disappear after 24 hours. But in recent weeks, many have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/search?q=get%20to%20know%20me%20instagram&amp;t=1704282192840">re-uploaded</a> their answers to TikTok, too, with the title, "Get to know me." But one creator is warning people to avoid it, suggesting there could be unforeseen consequences to participating in the trend.Eliana Shiloh, whose <a target="_blank" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/eliana-shiloh-584835181/">LinkedIn profile</a> says she's a cyber and strategic risk analyst at Deloitte based in Chicago, posted a TikTok <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@elshiloh/video/7315649106582752558?lang=en">video</a> about the trend on December 23."I won't lie, I almost fell victim to this. I literally started filling it out, and then I was like, 'Wait a damn minute,'" she said.She went on to explain she thought the prompts matched some security questions she had attached to her personal accounts, and suggested hackers could "have a field day" with the trend."If you did that trend, delete that shit right now. Get rid of it. Remove all proof of it from the internet," she said, adding that she felt "we're inching" closer to sharing social security numbers online. Her video received 1.6 million views, but many of the responses seemed to dismiss her concerns. Comments accused her of "reaching" and wrote that it was a big step from sharing a favorite color to a social security number. A huge number of viewers also disputed her premise, saying the questions in the template did not coincide with typical security questions.In fact, it's unlikely most people have security questions at all. Lisa Plaggemier, the executive director at the National Cybersecurity Alliance, told Business Insider that the personal questions system as a way to regain access to an account when a user has forgotten a password has become all but obsolete. Most companies have moved to more secure forms of multi-factor authentication, like push notifications or codes that get texted or emailed to users, she said.But that doesn't mean the trend is harmless."You're really giving a bad guy everything they need to social engineer you," Plaggemier said of the posts. The job analytics database of GlobalData, a data and analytics company, showed a notable shift in the pharmaceutical industry as companies are increasingly prioritising the adoption of emerging technologies and stringent compliance measures to safeguard against cyber threats and data breaches. An analysis of Company Filing Analytics Database revealed that cybersecurity dominated pharma industry discussions during Q2 2023 as well amid the push for digital transformation. "The growing digital engagement, coupled with the rising occurrence of data breaches, has prompted pharma companies to place a heightened emphasis on roles geared towards minimising enterprise risks. These roles aim to advocate privacy measures and develop cybersecurity strategies that enhance the comprehension of privacy-related risks linked to emerging technologies," said Misa Singh, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData, in a statement. In August, the global pharmaceutical industry experienced a 19 per cent rise in new job postings related to cybersecurity in Q2 2023 compared with the previous quarter, the report said. "In an era where data is the lifeblood of the pharmaceutical industry, the shift towards embracing technology and fortifying cybersecurity measures is not just a strategic move but a critical imperative. The central bank imposed the monetary penalty of Rs 65 lakh on AP Mahesh Co-operative Bank after the RBI's thorough cyber audit and the Hyderabad police investigation revealed the bank's significant "lapses" which led to the breach pertaining to the case wherein hackers breached the bank's systems through phishing mails and siphoned off Rs 12.48 crore in January 2022. "The RBI's thorough cyber audit and the police investigation revealed the bank's significant lapses which led to the breach. This is the first time ever that such an action has been taken against any Bank. All banks should adhere to cyber security practices to avoid such loss of public money and crucial data," a release from Hyderabad Police said. After AP Mahesh Co-operative Urban Bank reported the cyber-fraud incident, a case was registered and police said the criminal act was carried out through a series of phishing emails that were cleverly disguised and sent to bank employees. Upon opening these malicious emails, the employees' systems were compromised, providing the fraudsters full access to the bank's network. During the course of the investigation of the case several perpetrators, including Nigerian nationals, were arrested, police said. "This investigation also revealed bank's negligence which is evident from its failure to implement Cyber security measures, such as an Anti-phishing application, Intrusion prevention and detection systems, and Real-time threat defense and management systems, as mandated by the RBI," Hyderabad Police said. These Cyber Security components are indispensable for safeguarding cyber landscape, and were found to be conspicuously absent within the bank's cyber security infrastructure, the release said adding Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand, corresponded with the RBI Governor, highlighting the critical lapses and requested for the suspension of the bank's license to operate. The current legal framework did not allow for the criminal negligence charges against the bank management, it said. "Nevertheless, the Hyderabad City Police pursued the matter which resulted in the RBI imposing a monetary penalty of Rs 65 lakh on AP Mahesh Co-operative Bank," the release added.
