The hacker was forced to lower his price to $150.</p><p>After a team of undercover analysts from Recorded Future's Insikt Group embedded themselves with users from the dark-web forum, they came across the hacker who exploited a simple vulnerability on Netgear-brand routers.</p><p>Through this exploit, the hacker gained access to documents belonging to a US Air Force service member stationed at the Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, and documents belonging to another service member believed to be in the US Army.</p><p>The sensitive files included a maintenance manual for the MQ-9A Reaper drone, a list of airmen assigned to a Reaper drone unit, manuals on how to suppress improvised explosive devices, and an M1 Abrams tank manual.</p><p>Although the materials do not appear to be classified, the information was still prohibited from being "released to another nation without specific authority" and was intended for "military purposes only."</p><p>The hacker also tapped into live footage of surveillance cameras at the US-Mexico border and NASA bases, and an MQ-1 Predator flying over the Gulf of Mexico.</p><p>The hacker claimed to have stolen "classified" information from the Pentagon, but Insikt Group's analysts say their interactions with the hacker painted a less sophisticated picture. After building a rapport with other users on the dark-web forum, analysts chatted with the hacker and discovered he possessed "above amateur" abilities and may have been part of a group within a larger group.</p><p>"I wouldn't say that they possess skills of highly advanced threat-actors," Andrei Barysevich, a researcher at Recorded Future, told Business Insider. "They have enough knowledge to realize the potential of a very simple vulnerability and use it consistently."</p><p>Analysts say they have a "good level of confidence" of the hacker's identity, and are coordinating with Homeland Security officials in their investigation. A DHS representative declined to comment on the matter and the affected Air Force drone unit did not respond to requests for comment.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>USAF</span></p><p class="caption">The MQ-9A Reaper.</p></div><p></p></div></div><p></p><h2>He didn't fear the Reaper</h2><p>The hacker may not have been fully aware of the nature of the information he possessed. At one point, he complained that he was unable to find interested buyers for the files - which he believed were highly valuable. He ulimately lowered his price.</p><p>"I expect about $150 or $200 for being classified information" he said, according to a transcript.</p><p>In an attempt to make a quick sale, he was also "proactive in giving" samples to analysts, which in turn allowed them to determine whom the documents were stolen from.</p><p>"[It] clearly shows he had no knowledge of how much this data may cost and where and whom to sell it to," analyst Barysevich said. "He was attempting to get rid of it as soon as possible."</p><p>After Barysevich's team alerted US officials, the vulnerable computers were taken offline. That move ultimately cut off the hacker's access to the files.</p><p>The hacker, who is believed to live in a poverty-stricken country in South America, said his internet connection was slow and that, because his bandwidth was limited, he did not download as much information as he had hoped to, prior to finding a willing buyer.</p><p>Instead, he relied on screenshots and shared them with the analysts, who say they believe he was still unable to find a buyer.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Amazon</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><p></p><h2>A password impasse</h2><p>The <a href="https://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Netgear-Add-a-password-or-risk-losing-your-data-6811071.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netgear router vulnerability</a>, which dates back to 2016, allowed hackers to access private files remotely if a user's password is outdated. Despite several firmware updates and countless <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/router-firmware-update-reboot-password-fbi-warning-2018-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news articles</a> on the subject, thousands of routers remain vulnerable.</p><p>A simple search on Shodan, a search engine for devices connected to the internet, reveals more than 4,000 routers that are susceptible to the attack.</p><p>"We're literally talking about thousands of systems," Barysevich said. "And many of them appear to be operated by government employees."</p><p>Hackers, like the one Barysevich's team encountered, would scan large segments of the internet by country, identify which routers would have a standard port used by private servers, and then use the default password to discover private files.</p><p>It's difficult to match the contents of the files with their owners, but that's not exactly the point. It's a brute-force method with only one goal in mind: to find valuable data and exploit it.</p><p>"Sadly, very few understand the importance of properly securing wireless access points [WAP], and even fewer use strong passwords and understand how to spot phishing emails," Recorded Future said in a report.</p><p>"The fact that a single hacker with moderate technical skills was able to identify several vulnerable military targets and exfiltrate highly sensitive information in a week's time is a disturbing preview of what a more determined and organized group with superior technical and financial resources could achieve."</p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/border-patrol-agents-us-mexico-border-video-2018-7">I spent a day with Border Patrol agents at the US-Mexico border</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div>

The company addressed multiple security issues this week.</strong></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Dark-web researchers discovered a database of what appeared to be 2,300 Zoom usernames and passwords in a forum where criminals were writing automated programs to try to hack into the video service.</p><p>The researchers believe the credentials in the database were real Zoom log-ins, though they do not appear to have come from a Zoom data breach, researcher Etay Maor of cybersecurity firm IntSights says. He speculates that bad actors may have found them by taking advantage of users' bad data-hygiene habits. For example, people may have stored their passwords in insecure ways.</p><p>Maor said the database also included meeting IDs, meeting names, and meeting host key codes for some of the accounts. Based on the email addresses, the accounts belong to people who work at banks, consulting companies, education organizations, healthcare providers, and software vendors. He did not personally test whether the credentials worked, he said, to avoid breaking the law.</p><p>IntSights scans the dark web - the hard-to-access counterpart to the public internet that isn't indexed by search engines and is often used as a black market - for mentions of its customers. While doing unrelated research, Maor says he discovered the database in a forum where criminals were discussing how to write computer programs to automatically log into the Zoom accounts, with the goal of harvesting additional user information. Maor suggested that the bad actors would try to use the Zoom account information to create meetings where they pose as the owner of the account to gather other valuable information.</p><p>A spokesperson for Zoom said the company takes user security seriously and is investigating the matter.</p><p>The bad actors were also discussing "credential-stuffing," where the Zoom passwords could be automatically tested on other sites.</p><p>"The criminals are not only targeting Zoom - they're automating attacks on Zoom," Maor said.</p><p>Zoom has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-facing-multiple-reported-security-issues-amid-coronavirus-crisis-2020-4">besieged by security issues</a> following a spike in use of its videoconferencing platform because of the shift toward remote work amid the coronavirus pandemic. This week Zoom CEO Eric Yuan <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-security-features-easier-access-stop-zoombombing-eric-yuan-2020-4">announced a bevy of security upgrades</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/zoom-ceo-sorry-privacy-security-2020-4">personally apologized</a> for the holes in the platform that didn't block malware or "Zoombombing" disruptive intruders.</p><p>Maor's blog post about the discovery was to be published <a href="https://intsights.com/blog/zooming-in-on-the-target-cybercriminals-automate-attacks-against-remote-workers">on the IntSights blog</a> on Friday morning. "Realizing most of the workforce is now required to do their jobs from home, threat actors are actively looking for ways to gain access to collaboration and communication tools, like Zoom," the post says.</p><p>Maor added that the criminals were not selling access to the database but collaborating on its use and coworking like the Zoom users whose credentials they stole. "You can't survive in that atmosphere unless you share tools," he said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The "crypto couple" Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan are due for a plea hearing on Thursday.</li><li>The couple are expected to plead guilty to orchestrating a $4.5 billion bitcoin-laundering scheme.</li></ul><p>The husband and wife ensnared in charges related to a $4.5 billion bitcoin-laundering scheme are due in federal court on Thursday for a hearing and expected to plead guilty to orchestrating an elaborate plot to sell bitcoin that was stolen during the 2016 hack of Bitfinex.</p><p>Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, an eccentric couple known for walking a leashed Bengal cat in Manhattan and for Morgan's rap performances under the name "Razzlekhan," were arrested in February 2022 following what the Department of Justice said was its "<a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/two-arrested-alleged-conspiracy-launder-45-billion-stolen-cryptocurrency" target="_blank" rel="noopener">largest financial seizure ever</a>." The second largest occurred later that same year, when the feds seized <a href="https://www.occrp.org/en/daily/17004-us-doj-announces-historic-3-36b-crypto-seizure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$3.36 billion worth of bitcoin</a> that had been stolen from a dark-web site years earlier.</p><p>Lichtenstein and Morgan, Federal prosecutors have alleged, "employed numerous sophisticated laundering techniques," creating fake identities to set up online accounts, depositing the funds into virtual currency exchanges and dark-web markets, and converting them into other virtual currencies — all to cover their tracks.</p><p>Lichtenstein and Morgan are charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the United States. Together, the charges carry a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.</p><p>An attorney for both Lichtenstein and Morgan did not respond to a request for comment ahead of Thursday's plea hearing.</p><div type="image" title="heather morgan razzlekhan crypto bitcoin" height="661" width="1024" msid="102280992" hostid="261"></div><p>The saga began in August 2016 when the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex was hacked. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bitfinex-indictment-heather-morgan-ilya-lichtenstein-friends-react-2022-2?IR=C">As Insider previously reported</a>, Lichtenstein and Morgan were not accused of carrying out the hack itself, but as a result of the hack, 119,754 bitcoins were moved into an outside wallet Lichtenstein controlled.</p><p>That bitcoin amounted to $71 million by January 2017, at which point the IRS began tracing thousands of transactions moving through dozens of accounts — eventually landing in Lichtenstein's and Morgan's personal accounts.</p><p>At the time, the couple said the bitcoin came from investments that predated 2015, but Lichtenstein kept highly detailed notes about the scheme in cloud storage, which authorities eventually gained access to. Among the documents authorities found was a list of 2,000 virtual currency addresses and their private keys, all of which could be traced back to the hack. Authorities also found a spreadsheet with login information for cryptocurrency-exchange accounts, with notes about which accounts were frozen.</p><p>Prosecutors also alleged that Lichtenstein and Morgan had been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bitfinex-bitcoin-couple-prosecutors-allege-russia-ukraine-contingency-plan-2022-2">planning to flee to Russia</a> under new identities. </p><p>Authorities found a folder in Lichtenstein's cloud storage labeled "personas" with information on how to use the dark web to obtain fake identities. While executing a search warrant on the couple's home, authorities found hollowed-out books, dozens of electronic devices, a bag labeled "burner phones," $40,000 in cash, and foreign currency. </p><p>Since their 2022 arrests, Morgan has been on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heather-morgan-lichtenstein-bail-ruling-stolen-bitfinex-bitcoin-laundering-case-2022-2">house arrest</a> on a $3 million bond, and court records said she had a new job as a "growth marketing and business development specialist" at an undisclosed tech company. Lichtenstein, whom prosecutors have described as a flight risk over his Russian citizenship, has remained incarcerated.</p>

Sites hosted on it do not appear in regular search engines and require specific tools to be accessed.</p><p><a href="http://www.interpol.int/News-and-media/News/2015/N2015-108" title="INTERPOL Darknet training shines light on underground criminal activities">Interpol announced its plans</a> to create its own dark web network in a press release. The testing ground will be run by Interpol's Cyber Research Lab. It will simulate real dark web practices, such as private cryptocurrency transactions on underground cyber marketplaces.</p><p>The simulated dark web will be used in a five-day Interpol training course. The course will help train law enforcement officers in how criminals on the darkweb operate. The course will also include simulated dark web takedown operations.</p><p>Interpol director of cyber innovation Madan Oberoi said the training is essential, as many law enforcement departments do not have the skills needed to combat cyber criminals operating on the dark web.</p><p>"Darknets are fast emerging as the preferred trading venue for organized crime networks and individuals to carry out illicit activities, with cryptocurrencies the preferred medium for paying for these criminal services," he said.</p><p>"The specialised training provided by Interpol equips law enforcement with the understanding and tools they need to take very real action targeting criminals in the virtual world."</p><p>The technical details of the training scheme remain unknown, as does which law enforcement agencies have signed up to take it. Business Insider has reached out to Interpol.</p><h2>The cyber black market problem</h2><p>Interpol's training scheme is part of a wider effort by law enforcement to combat digital black markets.</p><p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/darkode-fbi-shuts-down-the-worlds-most-dangerous-hacking-forum-arrest-70-2015-7" title="All the details about the FBI's Darkode takedown in 6 easy facts">The FBI led an international sting operation against the "Darkode" black market in July.</a> Darkode is a members-only hacking forum that grants members access to an underground network where they can buy, sell, or trade attack tools and stolen goods.</p><p>It was shut down on July 15 as a part of an 18-month operation, codenamed Shrouded Horizon, that involved law enforcement from 20 countries. One of the world's biggest law enforcement agencies is creating its own dark web

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Customers use computers at an internet cafe in Taiyuan, Shanxi province on June 29, 2009.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Cyberattacks on American targets are an emerging national-security threat and an issue for US foreign policy.</span></p><p><span>But for all the dangers of state-backed, politically motivated hacking, profit-motivated cybercriminals are a more frequent and perhaps much greater hazard for the majority of people.<br /></span></p><p><span>North Korea may <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sony-hack-should-be-considered-an-act-of-war-2014-12">be able to hobble a major movie studio</a>, and the Chinese government has <a href="http://breakingdefense.com/2013/06/top-official-admits-f-35-stealth-fighter-secrets-stolen/">frequently stolen information on US defense hardware</a>. </span></p><p><span>But individuals are much softer targets than governments or major corporations. And every individual has access to information - ranging from medical data to bank-account numbers to online passwords to basic biographical information - off which enterprising hackers can profit.</span></p><p><span>Flashpoint, a private intelligence firm that researches online criminal networks, released Thursday its annual report on "highlights and trends in the deep and dark web." </span><span>The report, which was provided to Business Insider, gives a sense of how online criminality evolved in 2015. </span></p><p><span>The firm, which provides proprietary intelligence on dark-web activity, gathered some jarring data about the ease and apparent banality of contemporary online criminal enterprises. For example, Flashpoint found one online marketplace on which cybercriminals were selling hacking victims' birth dates for as little as $3, for use in verifying fraudulent Google Wallet accounts.</span></p><p><span>The Flashpoint report portrays an online criminal community that's becoming increasingly transnational. And with the help of growing foreign connections, dark web users in a country that's been at the forefront of politically motivated hacking are starting to make a splash on the criminal scene as well.</span></p><p>Flashpoint's experts have "observed increasing signs indicating the maturing and internationalization of the Chinese cybercrime underground," the report said.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bank of America</span></p><p class="caption">Graphic from a Bank of America report depicting cyber attacks during a single 11-hour period in August of 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div>As the report explained, Chinese cyber criminals have typically transacted through on "one-on-one engagements negotiated via private messages or instant messenger applications." </p><p>But over the past year, they've shown signs of moving on to web forums and established networks that don't depend on this degree of personal contact. And, according to Flashpoint, these forums are usually "within the Russian underground."</p><p>Russia is considered to be the global leader in for-profit hacking, with Russian cyber crime <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/skilled-cheap-russian-hackers-power-american-cybercrime-n22371">representing an estimated $2 billion industry in 2014</a>, according to </p><p><span>"Flashpoint has noted an uptick in Chinese-speaking actors operating on international, yet Russian-run, cybercrime forums such as </span><span>Lampeduza, Crdclub, and Infraud," the report said. </span></p><p>Chinese cybercriminals also appear to be learning from the example of Russian-based networks and establishing web forums within China, for specific use by Chinese cybercriminals.</p><p>"<span>Taking a page from the Russian model, some Chinese cybercriminals have estab</span><span>lished native Chinese communities or shops of their own," the report noted. </span></p><p><span>Though these networks' users are typically limited to China, they include two sizable online shops dedicated to trading in stolen personal information and facilitating illicit purchases.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Photo by Greg Bowker - Pool/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Chinese President Xi Jinping raises his glass for a toast during his talk before lunch at SkyCity Grand Hotel on November 21, 2014 in Auckland, New Zealand.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span><span>The fact that Chinese for-profit hackers are becoming more like Russia's in their behavior and practices has some alarming implications. China has a population of over 1.3 billion, <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/03/world/china-internet-growth-2014/">some 649 million of whom are web users</a> - making for a sizable pool of current and future cybercriminals. As it is, China is already <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/report-warns-of-chinese-hacking-1445227440">one of the world's most prolific and dangerous hacking nations</a>. </span></p><p><span>At the same time, Russian dark web networks are a partial reflection of the country's existing criminal culture, which exists in a context of widespread official corruption and <a href="http://www.rferl.org/content/putins-mafia-statecraft/27329898.html">close ties between organized crime and the state</a>. The environment for enterprising cyber criminals isn't quite as friendly in China, a more thoroughly oppressive state with <a href="http://www.wsj.com/articles/china-touts-its-great-firewall-in-push-for-internet-control-1450251090">strict web controls</a> and a leader in President Xi Jinping, who's made a <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/04/xi-jinping-china-corruption-political-culture/389787/">far-reaching anti-corruption push</a> one of his top priorities. </span></p><p><span>Xi also made a point of <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2015/09/23/news/companies/xi-jinping-tech-leaders/">meeting with Silicon Valley tech-industry leaders</a> during a September 2015 trip to the US, a sign of how highly Beijing values some of its business relationships in the US.
