The primary goal of the army is to work for national security and protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country. It guards the country from threats and external aggressions. Its secondary responsibilities are to support the civil authority during calamities and natural disasters. Here is an overview of the structure of Indian army, its responsibilities, ranks and reporting portfolio. The Indian Army is divided into three segments namely Army, Navy and Air Force. The President of Indian is the Supreme Commander of these three services. The army headquarters is located in Delhi and under the command of the Chief of the Army Staff. He holds the rank of a four star General and is assisted by 8 Lieutenant Generals. The description of these eight lieutenant generals include a vice-chief, two deputy chiefs, a military secretary, the quartermaster general, an adjutant General, the master general of ordnance and the engineer in Chief. Indian Army Commands The Indian Army is divided into six commands for operations and one command for training. The General-Officer-Commander-in-Chief (GOC-i-C) also called as the Army Commander heads each of these commands. Usually the senior-most Lieutenant Generals in the army is conferred with this rank. Corps Every command generally consists of two or more corps. In total there are thirteen corps in the Indian army each of them commanded by a General Officer Commander (GOC), who is also called the Corps Commander. He holds a Lieutenant General rank. Division Every corps is made of three to four divisions. Each of these divisions is headed by GOC (Division Commander) who holds the rank of Major General. Indian army has totally 37 divisions. Brigade Every corps is made of three to four Brigades. In a Brigade, there will be usually 3,000 troops. Every Brigade is commanded by a Brigadier. Battalion Four to five rifle companies constitute a battalion. Ever battalion is commanded by a battalion commander in the rank of a Colonel. A battalion is the main fighting unit of an infantry. Rifle Company A rifle company is made of three platoons. A company is commanded by a Company Commander who is in the rank of a Major or Lieutenant Colonel. Platoon A platoon is made of three sections. The Platoon Commander who is also a JCO commands a platoon. Section This is the smallest military outfit comprising 10 candidates. A section commander in the rank of a Havaldhar commands a section. Indian army Organization Indian Army functions under two parts namely Arms and Services. The troops that will actually carry out the different operations make up the arms segment. The rest of the army is said to belong to the services segment. The responsibility of the services segment is to provide the logistics and administration support for the army. Fighting arms consist of armor, infantry, and mechanized infantry. "The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers". Indian Army said. The force further stated that senior military officials of both the countries are currently meeting at the face-off site to defuse the situation. On Monday, Brigade Commander and company level talks happened in Eastern Ladakh between India and China. The talks are happening near patrolling point 14, near the mouth of Galwan Valley and patrolling point 17 at Hot Spring Area.

Indian Army confirms officer, two soldiers killed in clashes with Chinese soldiers in Ladakh

<ul><li>The Indian army has started an online registration for recruiting <keyword id="7127917" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-in-military-police">women in military police</keyword> as soldiers. </li><li>The recruitment drive will fill nearly 100 vacancies. </li><li>The women candidates need to qualify a Common Entrance Exam (CEE) post which they will have to appear for the Physical Endurance Test(PET).</li></ul>While Indian women are already making strides in the Air Force, flying fighter jets and as officers in the Navy, the Indian army has started an online registration for recruiting women in military police as soldiers, aiming to fill nearly100 vacancies. The application process starts today, and will end on 8 June, 2019. In a first, Indian Army launches a recruitment drive for women soldiers

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> has issued new directives to its officers to limit the usage of WhatsApp and social media platforms.</li><li>The Army claims that WhatsApp is being used a method for foreign intelligence agencies to profile officers and their families.</li><li>Family members of Indian Army officers have also been asked to remove references to serving members and photos of officers in uniform from social media.</li></ul>The Indian Army has issued <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/shun-big-social-media-groups-army-to-staff/articleshow/70135817.cms">new guidelines</a> for its officers and their social media usage. The news comes after reports of Pakistani intelligence using these platforms to profile Army officers and their families. They've asked officers to be en guard for unknown phone numbers on WhatsApp groups and third party contacts in Facebook communities who might try and gain sensitive information about movements of official forces. The two page directive issued to the 1.3 million officers of the Army advises them against joining large WhatsApp groups and communities on other social media platforms, where the identity of many of the participants in unknown. Even families of the Army officers have been advised to remove all references to serving members and remove photos of officers in uniform from their profiles. In order to make sure that these guidelines are met, the Army has said that they can spot check mobile phones and other personal devices at any time. Violation of regulations that leads to the leakage of sensitive information could result in the court martial of the officers responsible. Foreign threat In the past, foreign intelligence operatives have reportedly used ‘<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/indian-army-takes-steps-to-prevent-honey-trapping-of-soldiers-by-isi-operatives-1434829-2019-01-20">honey traps</a>’ to lure in officers with fake social media profiles guised as women to extract sensitive information. More recently, a senior officer within the Army was <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/indian-army-takes-steps-to-prevent-honey-trapping-of-soldiers-by-isi-operatives-1434829-2019-01-20">blackmailed</a> to click on a malware link. The email threatened the officer with leaking a video of his daughter should he fail to follow instructions. "Enemy intelligence operatives are keeping a close watch on the Whatsapp groups and trying to profile our officers and their families. They have even managed to enter some Whatsapp groups and quietly monitor conversations between officers," Army sources told <a href="https://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-amid-threat-from-pakistani-spy-agencies-army-imposes-whatsapp-restrictions-2769871">ANI</a>. Just last month, detectives with the Uttar Pradesh Police and Military Intelligence (MI) found Pakistani spy bots <a href="https://www.gadgetsnow.com/slideshows/pakistan-spy-hack-revisiting-whatsapp-security-tips-issued-by-indian-army/-Pakistan-spy-hack-Revisiting-WhatsApp-security-tips-issued-by-Indian-Army/photolist/69870956.cms">trying to hack</a> into over 98 official computer system from defence forces and organisations in India — including the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, paramilitary forces and state police. They were able to determine that the perpetrator went by ‘Sejal Kapoor’ on Facebook and used spy apps called ‘Whisper’ and ‘Gravity Rat’ to try and access official accounts. While Army asserts that this is a move to keep information safe, some feel that its a measure designed to curb criticism of the Army and limit the free exchange of views between active Army officers and veterans — like conversations around tax disability pensions. Indian Army fears that foreign intelligence may be using WhatsApp to profile its officers

If an officer is found guilty of sharing confidential information, even by accident, it could lead to a court martial. Some officers feel that the guidelines as much too severe since they are required to verify the identity of everyone in a WhatsApp group — even those like a group with school friends or college alumni. Others feel that its a political move by the Indian Army to keep qualms about disability pensions and other veteran complaints, at bay. Xiaomi phones and the company’s associated apps were also <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/technology/news/story/we-take-security-and-privacy-very-seriously-xiaomi-on-ib-advisory-that-put-popular-mi-apps-under-scanner-for-spying-1098000-2017-12-01">banned</a> by the Indian Army in 2017 citing an increased threat from spyware and malware. The overall list of banned apps included 42 separate entities including popular apps like Truecaller, WeChat and UC Browser. Indian Army officers in a flurry to leave WhatsApp groups after announcement of spot-checks

In 2019, 13 recruitment camps have been set up as of date and 80 are in the pipeline.</li></ul>Looks like, the Indian Army is facing resource crunch even in a country where unemployment is high. Over 45,000 posts are lying vacant in the Army, the Defence Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> informed the Parliament on June 24. Of this, as many as 7,399 posts are for the commissioned ranks, as per data from January 2019, <a href="http://pib.nic.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1575742">according to PIB press release</a>. “Various reasons including accretions of posts from time to time, tough selection procedures, difficult service conditions coupled with perceived high risk involved in the services career and limitation in number that can be trained are responsible for the situation,” the minister said responding to a question by Shri Rakesh Sinhain of the Upper House, Rajya Sabha. The Army has conducted over 200 recruitment camps across the country, in the last three years. In 2019, 13 recruitment camps have been set up as of date and 80 are in the pipeline. “Recruitment in the army is a continuous process and vacancies are filled without compromising the quality of training,” <a href="http://pib.nic.in/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1575742">Rajnath Singh said</a>. To fill these posts and attract the right kind of candidates, the Defence ministry has also been spending on publicity to inspire youth to join the forces. In 2016-17, the ministry spent ₹37.887 million for publicity, whereas in 2017-18 is dipped down to ₹19.947 million. The publicity expenditure for 2018-19 was ₹21.619 million.

The Indian Army faces resource crunch  with over 49,000 vacant posts

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Army">Indian Army</a> today successfully test fired the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Brahmos">Brahmos</a> supersonic land attack cruise missile. 
 
"At 1000 hrs today, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Army">Indian Army</a> fired <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Brahmos">Brahmos</a> land- attack cruise missile successfully against a designated target at Pokhran test range in Rajasthan, demonstrating the weapon's supreme operational capability," <keyword id="32723" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Defence">defence</keyword> officials said. 
 
The nearly 300 kms range missile was test launched by a Mobile Autonomous Launcher (MAL) deployed in full configuration. 
 "<keyword id="42900" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BrahMos">BRAHMOS</keyword> missile system, the most lethal and potent weapon system for precision strike available with <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword>, has proved again its effectiveness in today's successful launch," said Sudhir Mihra, Chief of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Brahmos">BrahMos</a> <keyword id="84758" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="aerospace">Aerospace</keyword>.

Sources told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/army-on-shopping-spree-commandos-to-get-deadlier/articleshow/57402280.cms">ET</a> that <keyword id="43909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defence-ministry">Defence ministry</keyword> has issued "restricted" tenders to select foreign arms companies so that it can acquire new assault rifles, sniper rifles, general purpose machine guns, light-weight rocket-launchers, tactical shotguns, pistols, night-vision devices and <keyword id="66787" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ammunition">ammunition</keyword>. 
 
"Seven tenders or RFPs (request for proposals) were issued last week to American, Israeli, Swedish and other companies for acquisition of the specialised weaponry on a fast-track basis. Separately in a different capital acquisition project, trials are in progress to acquire over 120 light strike vehicles, which can be carried by helicopters, for the Special Forces," claimed a source.

It was only recently that India had inked a few rushed deals for ammunition and spares, costing around <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/indian-government-seals-rs-20000-crore-urgent-arms-deal-to-make-forces-battle-ready/articleshow/56997094.cms">Rs 20,000 crore</a>, for all three branches viz. the Army, Navy and Air Force. This was done to make sure that the forces were ready to go to battle at short notice, and sustain the high-tempo operations for at least 10 days. 
 
Talking of the elite Special Forces, out of the 1.3-million strong Indian Army, there are only nine Para-Special Forces and five Para (Airborne) battalions. Each of these has 620 soldiers, selected after rigorous training. 
 
The small count of these forces mean that the costs involved in these new acquisitions is lesser as compared to the ones meant for army on the whole. Moreover, the Special Forces already have specialised weaponry, ranging from Israeli 5.56mm TAR-21 Tavor assault rifles and 7.62mm Galil sniper rifles to American M4A1 carbines and Swedish Carl Gustav rocket launchers. 
 
However, it was during the cross-border raids in Myanmar that the need for lighter, new-generation weapons was felt. Even though the Indian commandos carried huge weapon loads and quietly crossed over six km of the thickly-forested terrain, the Army conveyed the need of lighter equipment to top political authorities.

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> has banned 89 apps that it believes could be used to leak information to foreign intelligence agencies. </li><li>The <keyword id="9542035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="list-of-banned-apps">list of banned apps</keyword> includes 15 dating apps like Tinder, OkCupid, Bumble and TrulyMadly. </li><li>The Indian Army has also banned “all Tencent gaming apps”. </li></ul>The Indian Army has 89 apps including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and a slew of dating apps that could be used to target Indian army personnel. The Ministry of Defence has issued the formal government sanction letter for grant of permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army, paving the way for empowering women officers to shoulder larger roles in the organisation. The order specifies grant of Permanent Commission to Short Service Commissioned (SSC) Women Officers in all 10 streams of the Indian Army - Army Air Defence (AAD), Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), Army Service Corps (ASC), Army Ordnance Corps (AOC), and Intelligence Corps in addition to the existing streams of Judge and Advocate General (JAG) and Army Educational Corps (AEC). In anticipation, the Army Headquarters had set in motion a series of preparatory actions for conduct of the Permanent Commission Selection Board for affected women officers. The Selection Board will be scheduled as soon as all affected short service commission women officers exercise their option and complete requisite documentation. "The Indian Army is committed to provide equal opportunities to all personnel including Women Officers to serve the nation," the force said in a statement. It was after the Supreme Court ordered the Indian Army in February this year to grant permanent commission to women officers within three months, that the Army started the process to give serving women officers a bigger role. A bench comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Ajay Rastogi, said, "Short Service Commission (SSC) women officers, both within the period of fourteen years' service and beyond, should equally be entitled to consideration for the grant of PCs." The court insisted on shaking off typical arguments founded on the physical strengths and weaknesses of men and women and on assumptions about women in the social context of marriage and family that do not constitute a constitutionally valid basis for denying equal opportunity to women officers. "To cast aspersion on their abilities on the ground of gender is an affront not only to their dignity as women but to the dignity of the members of the Indian Army - men and women who serve as equal citizens in a common mission," noted the top court. The Indian Army then had stated that all women officers serving in the force from now on would be considered for permanent commission. Indian Army starts permanent commission for women officers

It was in 1984 that Indian soldiers beat Pakistani troops during Operation Meghdoot to capture most of the dominating heights on Saltoro Ridge to the west of <keyword id="153008" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Siachen-glacier">Siachen Glacier</keyword>. Since then, this stand-off at the world's highest, coldest and costliest battlefield has been in headlines for one reason or the other. 
 
Even though the post has not seen any action after the ceasefire agreement signed in November 2003, the glacier continues to take valued lives of brave soldiers from both countries. 
 
The country was once again reminded of this deadly glacier after ten soldiers of 19 Madras Regiment were buried in snow after an avalanche hit their 19600 feet high post. Lance-Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad, who was miraculously taken out alive from under the snow after being buried for six days, breathed his last yesterday in Delhi’s Army Hospital, taking the total casualty count to ten. 
 
Ever since the news of avalanche circulated in the country, there have been some voices that say that this fight is futile, over an icy, barren land, having no real strategic significance. 
 However, the Indian defence establishment is as convinced as it was earlier about the "strategic and tactical value" that Siachen holds for India. Officials say that the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> will not vacate the Saltoro Ridge until and unless Pakistan first agrees to the sequential pre-requisites of "authentication, delineation and demarcation" of the 110-km Actual Ground Position Line (AGPL), marking the respective troop positions on the glacial heights. 
 
 
"It has to be done both on the ground and maps. Only then can the subsequent disengagement and demilitarisation of Siachen be undertaken in a phased manner," a senior official told TOI. 
 
Pakistan, however, has strongly refused to do this, leading to the talks of making Siachen "a mountain of peace'' remain talks. 
 
Talking of the importance that Siachen holds, officials say that because Indian troops are present on the craggy Saltoro Ridge, that too at heights varying from 16,000 to 22,000-feet, a wedge is formed between China and Pakistan so that they don’t link up their military. 
 
Not only does Indian Army dominate the entire area, they also have a strong presence on Saltoro Ridge, which provides "some military depth" to Leh and Kargil, which in case the army is removed from there, could be threatened by the enemies. 
 
"If we withdraw from the heights, and Pakistani troops occupy them, it would be next-to-impossible to dislodge them. Pakistani soldiers, deployed lower on the western slopes of Saltoro Ridge, have learnt this at great cost when they repeatedly tried to dislodge us in the earlier years," said a senior officer.

#Hanumanthappa: Indian army won’t leave Siachen unless Pak leaves

Finally, after a 10-year long wait, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+army&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Army</a> would be getting 50,000 new <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bullet+proof+jackets&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">bullet-proof jackets</a>, however, the requirement is for 3,53,765. 
 
An emergency procurement deal was signed for 50,000 vests worth Rs 140 crore, which will be delivered by January 2017. 
 
The army requires modern light-weight jackets that adequately protect the head, neck, chest, groin and sides of foot-soldiers. 
However, the procurement is paltry against the 1.18-million strong Army. 
 
As per a TOI report, a "capital procurement" of 1.86 lakh modular jackets was scrapped in October 2015 because the samples offered by six vendors "failed" to clear field trials. 
 
However, when the samples failed to meet requirements, the Army vice-chief's existing financial powers were relaxed to ensure the urgent purchase of 50,000 jackets based on older technical specifications. 
 
Now, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=drdo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Defence Research and Development Organization</a> (<keyword id="6355142" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>) has introduced a prototype bullet-proof jacket, which also aims to protect against AK-47s and self-loading rifle bullets. 
 
The critical shortage of bullet-proof jackets have attracted criticism from all quarters as people say government is playing with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indian+soldiers&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">lives of the soldiers</a>.

Even after 10 yrs, 1.18-million strong Indian Army will get 50,000 modern bullet-proof jackets

To celebrate the National Defence Day, <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword>’s National Service Scheme students have uploaded about 10 posters and dedicated to the <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> on their Facebook page. Acknowledging the contribution of the armed forces and thanking them for their service, they have also dedicated a poem called 'A Little More' to the army. 
 
The posters were also shared by the Indian Army’s Facebook page, saying, "We appreciate the gesture by the students of National Service Scheme, IIT Bombay for the series of posters made for the #ArmedForces." 
 
"The post on the Indian Army page received 32,000+ likes and over 3,000 shares," a student associated with the group told ET.

Not only this, IIT Bombay students have also set up a YouTube channel, called ‘Open Learning Initiative’ so that language does not become a barrier in education. 
 
The channel would feature educational videos that would be recorded by volunteers, mostly undergraduate students, in multiple regional languages. As of now, the channel has over 100 such videos on science and maths in seven Indian languages including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Odia, Malayalam and Telugu.

Meanwhile, the 18th edition of the Indo-US joint training exercise "Yudh Abhyas 22" commenced in Uttarakhand's Auli on Saturday. Exercise Yudh Abhyas is conducted annually between India and US with the aim of exchanging best practices, Tactics, Techniques and Procedures between the Armies of the two nations. The previous edition of the exercise was conducted at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska (US) in October 2021. <keyword id="57857" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-army" source="Orion">US Army</keyword> soldiers of the 2nd Brigade of the 11th Airborne Division and Indian Army soldiers from the ASSAM Regiment are participating in the exercise. The training schedule focuses on the employment of an integrated battle group under Chapter VII of the UN Mandate. The scope of the Field Training Exercise includes the validation of integrated battle groups, force multipliers, establishment and functioning of surveillance grids, validation of operational logistics, mountain warfare skills, casualty evacuation and combat medical aid in adverse terrain and climatic conditions. According to the Army, the joint exercise focuses on deploying an infantry battalion group in peacekeeping and disaster relief operations under the mandate of the US. The Yudh Abhyas is a 15-day-long exercise that will focus on high altitude and extremely cold climate warfare.
