It will ensure ‘guaranteed seats’ to general passengers travelling in unreserved train coaches. The initiative <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/infrastructure/railways/get-seats-easily-in-unreserved-coaches-indian-railways-introduces-new-biometric-system-for-general-passengers/1656964/">launched</a> by Western Railway division’s Mumbai Central railway station and Bandra Terminus aims to create a hassle-free experience for passengers and avoid mayhem at platforms at the time of boarding. <keyword id="102890" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="biometrics">Biometrics</keyword> have been tested first, on Pushpak Express between Mumbai and Lucknow. The Railways has been practicing biometrics for Amravati Express, Jaipur Superfast Express, Karnavati Express , Gujarat Mail, Golden Temple Mail, Paschim Express, <keyword id="1340079" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amaravati-Express">Amaravati Express</keyword>, Avadh Express, <keyword id="1301826" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-Sampark-Kranti-Express">Maharashtra Sampark Kranti Express</keyword>. It plans on using the machines for long-distance trains as well. From now on, the passengers travelling in unreserved coaches will scan their fingerprints at the biometric system to get the token. The token-system will ensure that the number of passengers does not surpass the number of available seats. These tokens will be verified by the official staff (<keyword id="54832" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Railway-Protection-Force">Railway Protection Force</keyword>) on the platforms. Indian Railways is using biometrics to reduce and track unreserved passengers

Ahead of the festive season, the airfare from <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword>, <keyword id="6358070" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mumbai" source="Orion">Mumbai</keyword> and Kolkata to <keyword id="6358805" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="patna" source="Orion">Patna</keyword> has registered a more than three-fold rise over the off-peak season rates. The price of the Delhi to Patna flight on October 22 was Rs 14,000 while the airfare from Mumbai to Patna reached Rs 20,000. The current fare from these two places to Patna is more than the rate from Delhi to Sharjah, which is Rs 11,000. Delhi to Bangkok's current ticket costs Rs 10,500, and Delhi to Singapore is priced at Rs 13,000. The air ticket from Kolkata to Patna was hiked to Rs 10,500. The airline companies during the peak season were taking advantage of the flexible fare. The experts believe that the spike may continue. The air tickets from other cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat and others have also increased. One of the biggest reasons for the spikes in airfare is the unavailability of train tickets. The waiting lists for trains are very high and even <keyword id="56937" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tatkal" source="Orion">Tatkal</keyword> tickets are not available. Meanwhile, Northern Railway has decided to run 32 additional mail and express trains bound for Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, <keyword id="2634001" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jay-nagar" source="Orion">Jay Nagar</keyword>, Kishanganj, Katihar, and Barauni (Begusarai) to provide some relief to the passengers. Train Rides Into The Heartland Of India

Everything comes at a price. So does Modi’s dream of high speed trains. The proposed Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor is expected to have a train fare of Rs2,800, which is almost one and a half times more than the fare of Rajdhani Express first class, the premium class in an Indian premium train. 
 
However to justify this fare, the travel time on this route will be cut down by 5 hours making it a journey of just 2 hours to cover a distance of almost 600km. 
 
According to the final feasibility report submitted to railways by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), bullet trains on the 505-km route will achieve a maximum speed of 350kmph, cutting travel time to 2 hours from more than seven hours it takes now, as per a news report by The Economic Times. The proposed Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed corridor is estimated to cost Rs98,805 crore. 
 
If all goes well, the work will begin the venture in 2017 and complete it by 2023. The railways is now analysing Jica's report. A cabinet note seeking approval for the project is likely to be prepared next month, a railway official said. 
The Japan government has offered low-interest funds for the project, an official said. But the offer comes with the rider that 30% of the rolling stock be sourced from Japanese firms. SNCF of France has already carried out a separate feasibility study of the route and submitted the business model to the ministry, according to the ET report.

Soon-Mumbai to Ahmedabad in 2hrs!

Passengers will get the thrill of riding under the sea while travelling between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the first <keyword id="490067" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bullet-train">bullet train</keyword> of the country. 
 The 508 km long <keyword id="3126397" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Ahmedabad-high-speed-rail-corridor">Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed rail corridor</keyword> will have a 21 km long tunnel under the sea, said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the public transporter's ambitious bullet train project. 
 
While most part of the corridor is proposed to be on the elevated track, there will be a stretch after Thane creek towards Virar which will go under the sea as per the detailed project report by JICA. 
 
Estimated to cost about Rs 97,636 crore, 81 per cent of the funding for the project will come by way of a loan from Japan. The project cost includes possible cost escalation, interest during construction and import duties. 
 
It is a soft loan for 50 years at 0.1 per cent annual interest with 15 years' moratorium, said the official. 
 Rolling stock and other equipment like signalling and power system will be imported from Japan as per the <keyword id="1169184" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan-agreement">loan agreement</keyword>. 
 
The official said the loan agreement with Japan is slated to be signed by the end of the year and construction work is likely to begin by the end of 2018. 
 According top priority to the first of its kind project, railways has formed <keyword id="3274960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-High-Speed-Rail-Corporation-Limited">National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited</keyword> (NHSRCL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV), with a paid-up capital of Rs 500 crore. 
 
A search committee comprising senior government officials including Cabinet Secretary, Chairman Railway Board and Secretary DOPT among others is on the job currently to select the Managing Director and five directors for the NHSRCL. 
 
Railways has already allotted Rs 200 crore for the SPV. Maharashtra and Gujarat will have equity of 25 per cent each, while the Railways will have 50 per cent in the SPV. 
 
The bullet train is expected to cover 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in about two hours, running at a maximum speed of 350 kmph and operating speed of 320 kmph. 
 
At present, Duronto Express takes about seven hours to cover the distance between the two financial centres. 
 For timely completion of the project, a joint committee has been formed under the vice-chairman of NITI Aayog with the secretaries of the <keyword id="6423836" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Industrial-Policy-and-Promotion">Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion</keyword> (DIPP), Departments of Economic Affairs and Foreign Ministry as its members along with the Railway Board Chairman.

These women have been successful in facilitating a dialogue between the heads of the villages and NHSRCL engineers for the joint measurement survey. In fact, they have managed to get the survey team into villages where earlier the team was threatened with violence and couldn’t even enter. Apart from this, a team of 15 women from various blocks have been roped in to explain the compensation packages being offered and the exact land requirements to the villagers. But, all things considered, this is a minute step forward for this mammoth project. It is still unclear whether the deadline to start civil work by December 2018-January 2019 will be met. The NHSRCL spokesperson Dhananjay Kumar, however, is quite confident and told the <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/first-bullet-train-tender-goes-out-for-a-bridge-5247758/">Indian Express</a> that they are “on schedule as per the timeline of the project”. The 245 km long Delhi-Chandigarh corridor, one of the busiest routes in northern India, is slated to be first semi- high speed project being taken up by railways to run train at maximum speed of 200 kmph. Railways has identified nine high priority passenger corridors of total 6,400 km including Delhi-Agra, Delhi- Chandigarh to be upgraded to run semi-high speed train service. Delhi-Kanpur, Nagpur-Bilaspur, Mysore-Bengaluru-Chennai, Mumbai-Goa, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai-Hyderabad and Nagpur- Secunderabad routes have also been identified for raising the speeds of passenger trains to 160/200 kmph. SNCF, the French railways, will submit the execution strategy and implementation model with detailed cost of the semi-high speed project involving upgradation of the 245 km Chandigarh route. The French team is expected to submit the final report with details of cost analysis by October, said a senior <keyword id="54441" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Railway-ministry">Railway Ministry</keyword> official associated with the project. The aim is to reduce the travelling time considerably so it has been decided to upgrade the existing track for running trains at 200 kmph speed and French railways has been asked to prepare the draft document for it, he said. According to a rough estimate, it is likely to cost over Rs 10,000 crore with about Rs 46 cr per kilometre for running trains at 200 kmph, which includes rolling stock, and signal and track upgradation on the Chandigarh corridor. Currently, Shatabdi <keyword id="6413405" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="express">Express</keyword> covers the 245 km distance in about three hours 30 minutes travelling at a maximum speed of 110 kmph. The 200 kmph speed will reduce the journey time to one hour 50 minutes with one stop at Ambala. A high-level French delegation has recently mIndian Railways officials and discussed the possibility of running the semi-high speed trains on the Delhi-Chandigarh sector. It was agreed to explore the upgradation of the existing track to enable 200 kmph speed run, said the official.

When <keyword id="920574" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Robert-Knight">Robert Knight</keyword> launched two newspapers, The Englishman and The Friend of India, between 1810 and 1890 in India, did he ever fathom about growth of those newspapers? And that they would ignite the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Independence+movement">Indian Independence movement</a>? Knight, who was a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=British+East+India+Company">British</a> man himself, fought for free press and also resisted attempts by governments, businessmen and cultural spokespersons of influencing press and journalists. Knight became an inspiration for journalists and publishers who started promoting self-rule and criticized the policies of the British. 
 
By 1925, newspapers mushroomed across the length and breadth of the country. Knight’s The Englishman and The Friend of India merged and became The Statesman in 1875, and other newspapers like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=The+Times+of+India+">The Times of India</a> (1838), The Hindu (1878), Anandabazar Patrika (1922) and many more dotted the streets of India. 
 One more newspaper, which grabbed eyeballs was The Indian Express. Sensing the need to aware people and fuel the freedom struggle further, <keyword id="1943309" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ramnath-Goenka">Ramnath Goenka</keyword> launched The Indian Express in 1932 and subsequently formed the Indian Express Group with various sister publications. 
 Goenka, born in <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword> on April 3, 1904, went to <a href="Chennai">Chennai</a> to learn the business and worked as a despatch vendor with the Free Press Journal. In 2000, he featured in India Today magazine’s ‘100 People Who Shaped India’. 
 The Indian Express, whose tagline is ‘<keyword id="58267" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Journalism">Journalism</keyword> of Courage’ became an inspiration with its stories and grew leaps and bounds.

 2. Loksatta: Established in 1948, Loksatta is one of the most widely read Marathi newspapers in the country. The daily is published from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mumbai">Mumbai</a>, Pune, Nagpur, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, and Delhi. Loksatta Vruttant is a daily supplement with the paper that focuses on city specific issues. Other supplements include Lokrang, Chaturang, Viva, Vasturang and Career Counsellor. 
 
3. Screen: It is a leading weekly film magazine in India. Its content focuses on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bollywood">Bollywood</a>. It also has an e-magazine version. It was founded on September 26, 1951 with Manorama Katju as its editor. Screen, established in 1995, organizes and sponsors the Screen Awards to honour actors, directors and technicians for excellence in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Hindi+cinema">Hindi cinema</a>.  4. The <keyword id="336252" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Financial-Express">Financial Express</keyword>: It is a business daily, published by the group since 1961. It publishes 11 editions in English from cities such as Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, <keyword id="6354925" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Kolkata">Kolkata</keyword>, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune. Headquartered in Delhi, the daily has also pioneered two special annual awards - the FE India's Best Bank Awards and the FE-EVI Green <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Business+Leadership+Awards">Business Leadership Awards</a>, aims to fete the best performers across sectors for their endeavours to tackle the issue of climate-change. 
 
5. Lokprabha: Launched in 1974, it is a weekly Marathi magazine. It gives extensive and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=in-depth+coverage+">in-depth coverage</a> on various topics, ranging from social, political to cultural. Edited by the celebrated journalist, Pravin Tokekar, Lokprabha has over the years received many honors, Dr. <keyword id="3002513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Babasaheb-Ambedkar-Samajik-Patrakarita">Babasaheb Ambedkar Samajik Patrakarita</keyword> award being one of them. 
 
6. Jansatta: It was launched in 1983 with a single- minded purpose to reach out to a large section of the Hindi speaking Indian intelligentsia. In Hindi, 'jan' means people and 'satta' means government. Therefore, one can appropriately recognize the meaning of 'Jansatta' as people's mandate. It is regularly published from Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Chandigarh">Chandigarh</a>. 
 
7. The New Indian Express: In 1999, eight years after the group's founder Ramnath Goenka's death, the Indian Express Group split between the family members. The southern editions are known as The New Indian Express, while the northern editions, based in Mumbai, retained the original name The Indian Express. Both companies – The Indian Express Group and The New Indian Express are now separate entities.
