The number of merchant loans disbursed by Paytm grew 253% YoY in Q3 FY 2023, while the value of merchant loans grew 285% YoY to ₹1,825 crore. More than 85% of the value disbursed during the quarter was to merchants with a deployed Paytm payment device. Mobile payments pioneer Paytm ‘deeply rooted in India’ — social media users hail Paytm’s QR strength that powers India’s small merchants

Delhi-NCR has emerged as India's digital payments capital whereas Tamil Nadu's Katpadi is the fastest growing city for digital payments with 7X growth in 2022, One97 Communications Limited (OCL), that owns leading payments and financial services company <keyword id="6357120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="Orion">Paytm</keyword>, said in a report on Wednesday. The company helped its users avoid 1,618,796,629 trips to ATMs. Paytm is taking digital payments far and wide, driving financial inclusion with two out of three of its new users coming from smaller cities and towns. According to the aPaytm 2022 Recap' report, which highlighted interesting trends of transactions made through Paytm in 2022, <keyword id="6076084" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm-UPI" source="Orion">Paytm UPI</keyword> is one of the most preferred payment methods for Indians, with its superfast and secure payments. An intriguing observation is that the maximum number of payments have been done at 7.23 p.m. with Wednesday emerging as the busiest day in the week for digital transactions. Two of the most common names among Paytm's users are Rahul and Pooja, according to the report. Chennai and Trichy in Tamil Nadu have the highest percentage of offline payments on food and beverages while Amritsar saw the highest spend on health and grooming through Paytm. Noida and Nagpur saw the highest percentage of spending via Paytm on micro sellers or street side vendors. Paytm's market in the North East also saw huge growth. Also, no one chats when it comes to money. It’s always ‘paise de, katt le’ (pay and leave). So to put it in layman terms, the service maybe geared towards a newspaper-wallah, a kirana store, or towards paying a friend after a night out. Fair enough.

· No joining fees for Café. 
· They can choose if money goes into their Wallet or Bank account.

I live alone, i.e. I’m the man of the house. I hate bill payments. Imagine if I could automate my monthly broadband (local connection), newspaper and bread-milk bills. Great idea?

· I get notifications before and on due date. 
· Payment at the touch of a button. 
· I can use the money I might have saved in a wallet. 
 
What’s Not: 
· Language Support. My newspaper vendor might not understand English. 
· Which Kirana’s cool enough to accept wallet payments? They want ‘cash in hand’, and not their money ‘tied in some wallet’. 
· Does it make sense to transfer Rs. 39(Milk+Bread per day) via digital wallets? Not all Kiranas operate via monthly credit. Also, consider that there will be a 1-2% service charge in the near future. You can always fund this model via VC money though.

The point of the Hot or Not exercise is to point that while the service may be free for a while, a paltry 3% of India’s payments are digital. That means not many people might already be onboard to drive the ecosystem at a micro transaction level. This ain’t no WhatsApp, son. 
 Till that happens, try convincing the hairy Kirana uncle, or the grumpy auto driver to accept you ‘<keyword id="418872" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="digital-wallet">digital wallet</keyword>’ payment. In Govind’s words, “get the habit going”. However, if you live in a locality where the uber vegetable vendor sends a list of vegetable prices on WhatsApp every morning, the laundry boy accepts wallet payments, and the local kirana lets you buy that chocolate bar with the cashback you earned, I envy you.
