Bollywood is no longer the only source of entertainment content. The rising popularity of web series and subtitles has normalised binge-watching and made the audience comfortable with non-Hindi language cinema. As a result, people are more hungry than ever for good content. And when people are already hooked on a show or movie, the excitement to see how the story unfolds is even higher. This is why good sequels are always in demand!

From upcoming seasons of shows that ended on a cliffhanger to movies that were always planned as multi-part releases, sequels are going to be the flavour of 2023. Here’s a look at the most anticipated sequels of movies and web series releasing next year:

Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2

Ever since director Mani Ratnam announced that he will be adapting the 1955 Tamil-language fictional novel Ponniyin Selvan, people have been excited about the film. The roaring success of PS-1 at the Box Office is further proof that PS-2 is a sequel everyone is eagerly waiting for - especially to understand Queen Nandini’s (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) true intentions and the fate of Ponniyin Selvan (Jayam Ravi).

27 years after Indian released to widespread acclaim, director S. Shankar is returning with Indian 2 in 2023. Like the original, the sequel also stars Kamal Haasan as the vigilante protagonist. The star cast also includes Sudeep, Gulshan Grover, Kajal Aggarwal, and Rakul Preet Singh, among others.

The first season of this reality show amassed a massive fan following, with people actively discussing both the pitches and the judges. Releasing in January 2023, the second season of Shark Tank India will feature a new judge–CarDekho CEO Amit Jain–who has replaced Ashneer Grover.

Easily one of the finest Hindi original web series, Prime Video’s Made in Heaven won over critics and the audience with its first season in 2019. After a long wait, the show on wedding planners and relationships is all set to return in 2023. Apart from the regulars i.e. Arjun Mathur, Sobhita Dhulipala, Shashank Arora, Jim Sarbh, and Shivani Raghuvanshi, two new additions to the star cast have been announced for S2- Dr. Trinetra and Mona Singh.

Prime Video’s Mirzapur battled against Netflix’s Sacred Games when the two first released - but it’s long won the game of crime dramas, surpassing most other Hindi web series in this genre, at least in terms of popularity. The third season, which got the greenlight back in 2020 itself, will take off from where S2 ended - Gudda Bhaiya’s (Ali Fazal) emergence as the ‘king of Mirzapur. While an official release date has not yet been announced, S3 will most likely release in 2023.

Director Hansal Mehta’s Scam 1992 was a sleeper hit, with fans obsessing over the brilliant storytelling, and of course, the theme song (by composer Achint Thakkar). Mehta is now returning with the second installment of his ‘Scam’ franchise - Scam 2003: The Telgi Story. Adapted from journalist Sanjay Singh’s book Reporter Ki Diary, Scam 2003 is based on convicted Indian counterfeiter, Abdul Karim Telgi.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos

The collaboration between Marvel and Disney+ gifted Marvel fans several brilliant web series in the last two years. And WandaVision is easily one of the most loved of the lot. Now its sequel and spin-off, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, is all set to release in 2023 and will decode the origins of one of Marvel’s more colourful supervillains, Agatha Harkness.

YOU Season 4

The psychological thriller has vexed and excited fans in equal measures ever since its first season - thanks to the crush that most audience members developed on the protagonist Joe, played by Penn Badgley. Now the final season is releasing on Netflix, split in two parts - with part 1 releasing in February 2023 and part 2 in March 2023.

The first major Marvel release in 2023 is Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, among others. It’s the third film based on the superhero Ant-Man, and also marks the start of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Director duo Raj and DK have several exciting projects lined up for 2023, but their spy thriller The Family Man continues to evoke the most excitement. Starring Manoj Bajpayee in the lead role, the show is most likely to return for its third season next year. Though an exact release date hasn’t been announced, the S2 ending made it clear that S3 is loosely based on the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Jaideep Ahlawat - Abhishek Banerjee starrer Paatal Lok breached the exhausted genre of Hindi crime dramas to emerge as a crowd favourite - thanks to its impressive storytelling and stellar performances by the entire star cast. The shoot for the second season was scheduled to start in November 2022, and it’s anticipated that it will release in 2023 - though no official confirmation has been provided.

Considering that season 1 ended on a cliffhanger, the show was bound to return for season 2. The makers confirmed that season 2 was in the works earlier this year, and the main star cast will return. However, a release date has not yet been provided.

A comfort watch if there ever was one, Netflix’s Emily in Paris hooked the audience right from the start. And now this romantic comedy is returning for a fourth season in 2023. Following the adventures, or rather, misadventures of its protagonist Emily (played to perfection by Lily Collins), S4 was announced in January 2022, but a release date has not yet been disclosed by Netflix. S3 is currently streaming on Netflix.

John Wick: Chapter 4

The fourth installment in the John Wick series, John Wick: Chapter 4 brings back Keanu Reeves as the titular protagonist. Though the film’s shoot started in 2021, its release was delayed due to the pandemic. The professional hitman’s latest adventures will now hit the silver screen in March 2023.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

If Marvel has a slate of releases lined up for 2023, can DC be far behind? Of course not! Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to the 2018 Aquaman, is slated for a December 2023 release. The sequel will see Jason Momoa and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles from the original. However, there are conflicting reports on whether Amber Heard, who played Mera in the original, will be a part of the sequel or not - despite having shot for it.

The Mandalorian Season 3

The first live-action series in the Star Wars franchise, The Mandalorian premiered in 2019, opening to positive reviews and winning seven Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Starring Pedro Pascal (of Game of Thrones fame) in the lead role, the show will return with S3 in March 2023.

Everyone’s favourite ‘anti-hero’, Marvel’s Loki will return for a second season on Disney+ in 2023. In fact, Disney recently released a brief clipping from Loki S2, as part of its 2023 announcement video. Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson, naturally, will be returning in S2.
