Clubhouse for Android has been launched finally in a limited beta – it is currently limited to those in the US, but the company says the rollout will happen gradually to other English-speaking countries first, and then the rest of the world.

Clubhouse is a social audio platform that was launched as an iPhone-only app in 2020. It went viral after several celebrities across politics, technology, and others took to the platform.

The primary attraction of the platform is its audio-only streams, allowing you to participate without pausing everything else that you’re doing.

Clubhouse attracted people like American talk show host Oprah Winfery, Tesla’s Elon Musk, Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary, actor Aston Kutcher, entertainer Kevin Hart, rapper Drake among others.

“With Android, we believe that Clubhouse will feel more complete. We are so grateful to all of the Android users out there for their patience,” the company said in its blog post.

Android users can pre-register and be notified when the app becomes available in their country.

Even if you manage to login, you will still need an invitation to be able to use the app. Apart from that, since the Android version is still in beta, several features like the ability to link your Twitter and Instagram profiles, creating or managing a club, following topics and more are not available yet.

Clubhouse downloads have plunged by over 90%



Clubhouse downloads peaked in February this year, registering over 9.6 million installs in the month. However, since then, the downloads have fallen off a cliff. After falling to 2.7 million downloads in March, the app witnessed another major fall in April, registering only 9,22,000 installs.

Launching the Android version could bring back some momentum to the app’s download numbers.

However, Clubhouse will have to fend off a growing tide of competition from established players like Twitter, LinkedIn, Spotify, and soon, Facebook.

Twitter’s take on social audio – the new Spaces feature – is already live and rolling out to everyone with over 1,000 followers.

Facebook recently announced Live Audio Rooms feature that is expected to roll out “later this summer”.

Earlier this month, Clubhouse announced a partnership with US-based payments processor Stripe to let users send money to creators on the platform.
