When we purchase a smartphone, we often worry about the display and how we can protect it, as a damaged display is not cheap to repair. Corning Incorporated has launched its new protective glass that will make your smartphones more durable, enabling you to use them without worrying.

Corning has launched the Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the successor of the Gorilla Glass Victus that was introduced in 2020.

“Smartphones are the center of our digital lives, and the requirement for exceptional scratch and drop resistance has only increased with our growing reliance on clear, damage-free displays,” said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager of Gorilla Glass.

The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 offers the same scratch resistance as its predecessor. However, the company has improved drop protection. It is built using a new glass composition, which is claimed to improve drop performance on rough surfaces like concrete.

The new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 can survive multiple drops of up to 1 meter height on concrete and up to 2 meters on asphalt.

A height of 1 meter means it will survive even if you drop your phone while removing it from your pocket. The glass will survive even a drop from near your head if you are on asphalt. If your toddler drops your phone while playing with it, you won’t have to worry about the glass shattering.

“We challenged our scientists not only to create a glass composition that was durable enough to better survive drops from waist height onto rougher surfaces than asphalt but to improve cover-glass performance for larger and heavier devices,” Velasquez added.

Over 80% of customers consider durability as the most important factor

According to internal research conducted by Corning, 84% of customers in top smartphone markets – China, India, and the United States ranked durability as the top consideration while purchasing a smartphone.

Gorilla Glass Victus 2 to be used in upcoming flagships

The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is a premium offering and will only be used for flagship devices. We should see devices using glass from companies like Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and more in the coming months.
