Based in Mumbai, this edutech startup helps children between the ages of 6 and 14 build market-ready apps, games and animations online, using the fundamentals of coding. Within a year of its launch, Bajaj shares that WhiteHat Jr received a phenomenal reception from parents in India and is therefore hopeful that the global market will accept the product too. Since an edutech platform like this doesn’t really exist anywhere else currently, it is expected to do well even outside India. He adds that starting December, they will start pushing the startup internationally. The idea for starting WhiteHat Jr came to Bajaj when he was reading about the Industrial Revolution and how Mathematics hadn’t been a part of school curriculum till then. “After the Industrial Revolution, every school had to create a new curriculum but it took them 10 years to implement that. I realized something similar is happening now. Today, consumer tech is at the center of every household but the school curriculums are extremely basic. Nobody is teaching children coding from an early age,” explains Bajaj. Why parents are invested in the idea As a part of WhiteHat Jr’s curriculum, a six and a half year old Venkat Raman Patnaik developed a reward management system app that keeps a record of a ‘to-do’ list for school children, along with reward points that they earn for it. Similarly, 7-year-old Hirranyaa Rajani created a sign language app for the hearing impaired that benefits those with hearing impairment and those who want to learn sign language. Bajaj says that parents are welcoming WhiteHat Jr wholeheartedly because they are seeing the world changing in front of their eyes. With more and more automation disrupting the industry, a lot of jobs are getting redundant. “With automation, conventional occupations are getting disrupted. And more and more parents are aware of that,” says Bajaj. The startup has been witnessing 100% month-on-month growth since its launch in November 2018. “Between November and March, we were forming the product in beta and launched in April. After that, we doubled every month. We also raised our Series A funding very quickly in June, so the response we’ve been getting indicates that parents are quite aware of everything,” he adds. While their current curriculum caters to children between the ages of 6-14, Bajaj says they will soon launch a curriculum for 9-12 grades too. How WhiteHat Jr works The model of WhiteHat Jr is simple. It is a web-based system, much like a virtual classroom, and the teacher to student ratio is 1:1. The kids have to book a session online which then connects them to the teachers. There is also a coding platform where the participants can practice coding. Each session is around 45 minutes to an hour long. The sessions encourage children to develop apps, games and animation. “We are sending the top 1% of these kids to the US for a week-long mentorship with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. We also have an in-house team that helps them think on how to take a product and make it more market-ready,” says Bajaj. Currently, around 3,000 students and 350 teachers are on-board. It is also heartening to see children from non-metro cities are coming on board too. The metro to non-metro ratio is about 55:45. The future of WhiteHat Jr In November, when Bajaj started the company, he raised a seed funding of $1.3 million. He has just raised a Series A of $10 million. “Right now we are running a positive cash flow business, so there’s no immediate need for more funding right now,” explains Bajaj. The entity’s marketing and growth strategy would be linked to acquiring more users. “Right now we’ve only been doing B2C digital marketing but next we want to enter school channels and build more alliances. Till now, we’ve only done performance marketing but the outpouring of demand has been significant,” he adds. Bajaj further adds that they might consider an ad campaign after their next round of funding and has a plan to go global. “Taking the organization global is an important part of the plan because nobody has ever heard of a six-year-old creating apps and products that are disruptive and market-ready. So I think it has a great potential globally too where parents have already seen consumer tech to be the centre of their households. The idea that their kids can be a part of a technologically-driven future or create that future is a resonant idea globally. Starting December, we're going to push for international markets, but those plans are still being defined,” Bajaj says.

Interestingly, Byju’s had acquired Indian <keyword id="8345659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coding-for-kids" source="Orion">coding for kids</keyword> platform WhiteHat Jr for $350 million. The company had folded the three-year-old company into its Byju’s Future School offering to offer its services in the North American market. WhiteHat Jr had also expanded its services from coding-for-kids to maths, English and vocational classes. The company’s founder Karan Bajaj was leading the Byju’s Future School until last month, before he quit and Trupti Mukker took over. Mukker was Byju’s head of customer experience and delivery prior to this. Another interesting fact about the acquisition of Tynker is that it is the third startup in Byju’s portfolio that offers coding classes for kids. The company had earlier acquired rival Toppr, which offers coding classes in the form of Toppr Codr. Byju’s, in its press note, emphasised that the acquisition of Tynker would help the company accelerate its market presence in the US as the platform is used by over 60 million users and 100,000 schools in 150 countries. Founded in 2012 by Krishna Vedati, Srinivas Mandyam and Kelvin Chong, Tynker has raised over $10 million to date from Reach Capital, 500 Startups, New Ground Ventures, Relay Ventures and Cervin Ventures. “Joining forces with Tynker will unlock the ability for us to bring imagination to life for hundreds of millions of students through coding… Our goal is to ignite a love for programming in children globally and we feel strongly that Tynker's creative coding platform and approach to making programming fun and intuitive for kids will get us there even faster,” Byju Raveendran, founder and chief executive of Byju’s, said. Byju’s acquires yet another coding-for-kids startup, this time an American one

<ul><li><keyword id="1884281" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AbhiBus">Abhibus</keyword> is a bus ticketing and aggregation platform founded in 2008.</li><li><keyword id="6433699" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ixigo">Ixigo</keyword> would get access to Abhibus’ intellectual property and operations with this acquisition.</li><li>Ixigo is planning to file preliminary papers for its IPO by mid August, to raise ₹1,500 crore. </li></ul>Online ticketing startup Le Travenues — which operates ixigo — has acquired bus ticketing and aggregation platform AbhiBus on Thursday, August 5. The development comes only a week after ixigo raised $53 million in a round led by Singapore’s sovereign fund GIC. The acquisition will help ixigo expand its footprint in the online ticketing segment, as it gets ready to go public. According to sources within the company, ixigo is planning to file its preliminary paperwork draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) by mid August, to raise ₹1,200 crore to ₹1,5000 crore from the public market. Earlier this week, the Gurugram-based startup also converted itself into a<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/travel-portal-ixigo-moves-a-step-closer-to-ipo/articleshow/85006033.cms"> public limited company</a> to start off the initial public offering (IPO) process. The latest acquisition was done for a mix of cash and ixigo stock. Post this acquisition, AbhiBus team led by founder Sudhakar Reddy Chirra will join the ixigo team. Ixigo would also get access to AbhiBus’ intellectual property, brands, technology and operations with this acquisition. The duo claims to have a combined user base of 255 million, as of May 31, 2021. “By leveraging our combined user base, multi-modal transportation capabilities, tech resources and travel domain expertise we will be able to enhance the experience of millions of travellers in India every day,” Aloke Bajpai and Rajnish Kumar, cofounders of ixigo, said in a statement. Earlier this year, ixigo had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/ixigo-acquires-train-discovery-and-booking-platform-confirmtxt-in-a-cash-and-stock-deal/articleshow/80685580.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink">acquired</a> train booking app Confirmtkt. The company provides its tech solutions to both private and state transportation corporations in India. It has also partnered with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to offer bus ticketing services. AbhiBus claims that they used to sell around 26,000 bus tickets per day in the financial year 2020, before pandemic hit India. IPO-bound ixigo acquires bus ticketing platform AbhiBus to strengthen its footprint

<ul><li>India’s financial investigation agency has been investigating Amazon and <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> over the years. </li><li>The Enforcement Directorate issued a show-cause notice to both the companies and its founders last month. </li><li>Flipkart raised a $3.6 billion round at a valuation of $37.6 billion, a two-fold increase from 2018.</li></ul>India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reportedly warned Walmart-owned Flipkart and its founders — <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> and <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="binny-bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> — with a $1.35 billion penalty for alleged violation of the country’s foreign investment laws. According to a Reuters report citing sources it did not name, the financial investigation agency has alleged that after Flipkart got foreign investment, a related party, <keyword id="1556044" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="WS-retail">WS Retail</keyword>, started selling goods to consumers via the e-commerce platform. This is prohibited under Indian law. ED has issued show-cause notice to both the companies and its founders last month to explain why they shouldn’t face a penalty of $1.35 billion for allegedly violating India’s foreign direct investment (FDI) policy. Tiger Global, which has been an investor in Flipkart for a decade has also been issued such a notice. Tiger Global declined to comment on the issue. A Flipkart spokesperson told Reuters, the company is "in compliance with Indian laws and regulations…We will cooperate with the authorities as they look at this issue pertaining to the period 2009-2015 as per their notice." One of the sources at Flipkart told Reuters that they have around 90 days to respond to the notice and WS Retail had ceased its operations at the end of 2015. Flipkart was acquired by <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> in 2018, after which Sachin Bansal sold off all his shareholdings but Binny Bansal continues to hold some. The company’s valuation has doubled since then, from $16 billion in 2018 to $37.6 billion now. Last month, the company raised a $3.6 billion round led by Singapore-based GIC, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP investments), Softbank Vision Fund 2 and Walmart. DisruptAD, Qatar Investment Authority, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Tencent, Willoughby Capital, Antara Capital, Franklin Templeton and Tiger Global also participated in the round. Putin made the claim during a government meeting where he described it as "a very important step for the world". Putin thanked everyone who worked on the first-ever vaccine against the coronavirus and hoped that Russia will be able to start mass production of this medication in the near future. "I hope that our colleagues abroad will also move forward, and there will be quite a lot of products that can be used on the market, on the world market for medicines and vaccines," Putin was quoted as saying by the agency. Clinical trials of the vaccine kicked off on June 18 and included 38 volunteers. All of the participants developed an immunity. The first group was discharged on July 15, the second group on July 20. founded by Krishna Depura, Mohit Garg, Deepak Diwakar and Nishant Mungali in 2011. It helps companies build sales capabilities. It also offers solutions for onboarding, micro-learning and skills development. MindTickle plans to use this funding to expand its presence in multiple verticals as well as markets like Europe and Asia. A part of the funding would also be used to acquire more companies and expand their technology stack, MindTickle’s chief executive officer (CEO) and cofounder Depura told Business Insider. “So a reasonable chunk of [the] money will go into global expansions, getting into more territories and geographies. The second amount [sic] will go into R&amp;D [research and development], which we’ll use to develop our stack. I think $100 million is a lot of money and it’s not like we’ll deploy the money in the next six months or one year. But it’ll give us sufficient power to plan for the next three-four years to set up our base and continue to think over the horizon,” Depura added. He also highlighted that the company has a good presence in India at the moment, especially in the automotive and pharmaceutical sectors. MindTickle will also use a part of the funding to go aggressive on hiring across geographies and functions. It has already hired over 100 employees in 2021 and has openings for 115 positions. MindTickle is the third SaaS firm from India to enter the unicorn club in 2021

It has already set up local offices in the UK, Germany and Vietnam over the last one year, and cities like New York and Boston are next in line. The company aims to touch annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $100 million in the next three years, by 2024. Though MoEngage did not share their current ARR, the company claimed that it is higher than $20 million. This would mean that the company is looking to expand five fold in the next three years. The students then mailed to the varsity website their answer sheets and got an auto-generated response. </li><li>Pankaj Garg, a professor of Rajdhani College, said that the <keyword id="9732288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="main-problem">main problem</keyword> that students faced was in uploading the answer sheets. </li></ul> <keyword id="6360099" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university">Delhi University</keyword>'s online open book examinations for final-year undergraduate courses began on Monday with many students complaining about receiving two <keyword id="76676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Question-papers">question papers</keyword> and difficulty in uploading answer sheets. The exams began at 7.30 am and are being held in three shifts. Zubair Khan, a student of School of Open Learning (SOL), said, "I had my Hindi exam today according to the date-sheet. When I opened the portal for downloading my question paper, I found that two question papers were uploaded -- one of Hindi and another of the paper scheduled for August 13. I sent mails to the SOL but there was no response. I consulted a professor who advised me to attempt the paper scheduled for today." Another student, Deepak Gupta, said he was not sure if he could successfully upload his answer sheets before the scheduled time of 11.30 am. "It was 11.28 am by the time I finished creating PDF files (of my answer sheets). I tried to upload them but they didn't get uploaded. I have mailed them to the designated ID but do not know whether they will be accepted," he added. A student of B.Sc Physical Science, who did not wish to be identified, said that the paper was quite tough and in a situation, when classes could not happen properly, it was unjust for students. Pankaj Garg, a professor of Rajdhani College, said that the main problem that students faced was in uploading the answer sheets. "They faced problems in uploading PDF files and some of the students said that if they could upload answers to two questions, they could not upload the answers to the third. They were not sure whether their answer sheets were uploaded. The college received answer sheets on email post 11.30 am, which was the scheduled time," he said. Garg also said that teachers will face issues while evaluating answer sheets. "There is a fair possibility that there would be swapping of the pages while scanning and uploading, this would disturb the sequence.... Teachers have to be very very careful in connecting all those pages which belongs to the same question," he added. While scanning some pages may be blurred and it would be difficult to read them carefully and it would be more difficult to connect to the next page and hence the continuity of the answer would be lost, he added. For teachers, the most challenging point would be marking of pages, it seems that evaluation would take much longer, he stressed. The exams have been postponed several times.
