Ever since 2014, <a href="http://www.globalncap.org/global-ncaps-first-five-star-car-india-tata-nexon/">Global New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)</a>—a network of Global crash test programmes—has been conducting crash tests on Indian cars. Earlier, Global NCAP announced four-star crash test ratings for Nexon. With the upgradations in the safety measures introduced by the company—including making a Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) for driver and passenger a standard for all variants of the model — the homegrown car has now been updated with a five-star. According to the update, Nexon scored five stars for Adult Occupant Protection, while, for Child Occupant Protection, the car was rated at three stars. The ratings have been marked on the basis of safety equipments and protection offered by the company. Following Tata’s Nexon is Mahindra Marazzo achieving a four-star rating on the list. Mahindra Marrazzo offering features such as double airbags, ABS, SBR for driver and ISOFIX anchorages achieved two-stars for Child Occupant Protection. The latest results mark the safety of cars in India. The domestically manufactured cars showcase the capacity of Indian <keyword id="44718" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Car-market">car market</keyword> to achieve remarkable results in terms of safety, design and performance, said David Ward, secretary general, Global NCAP. “The model offers good protection for both adult head and neck, marginal protection for the driver chest and adequate protection for passenger chest,” stated Global NCAP. “The pedals showed some risk for the lower legs due to their displacement. The 18 month old child dummy received good protection while the 3 year old child passenger showed high readings in chest and head exposure,” it added. The government has ordered a probe into <keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword>' Nexon EV fire incident in Mumbai, as the company was investigating the "isolated thermal incident". The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which was earlier tasked with investigating electric two-wheeler fire incidents by the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry, would lead the probe into Nexon EV fire too. The DRDO probe had found serious defects in the batteries. These defects occurred because the electric two-wheeler manufacturers like Okinawa Autotech, Pure EV, Jitendra Electric Vehicles, Ola Electric and Boom Motors may have used "lower-grade materials to cut costs". A <keyword id="7931165" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Nexon-EV" source="Orion">Tata Nexon EV</keyword> caught fire in Mumbai and the company said on Thursday a detailed investigation is currently being conducted to ascertain the facts of the recent isolated thermal incident that is doing the rounds on social media. The EV car fire incident was reported from Vasai West (near Panchvati hotel) in Mumbai late on Wednesday. "We will share a detailed response after our complete investigation. As fires and explosions in electric two-wheelers continue unabated, the government is all set to introduce EV battery standards (BIS standards) for EV two-wheelers that will be expanded to four-wheelers at a later stage. The BIS standards for EV batteries will look into "size, connectors, specification and minimum quality of cells, the battery's capacity". Earlier, NITI Aayog in a discussion paper also stressed upon the need for BIS standards as the first step towards a national battery swapping policy.
