Ohio Democratic Senate nominee Tim Ryan during a Monday debate told Republican challenger JD Vance to "move back to San Francisco" if he wanted to run against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a reference to the GOP politician frequently invoking the California lawmaker's name in his responses.

Ryan and Vance both tore into each other during the contentious debate, but it was the GOP nominee's usage of Pelosi in his remarks that made the ten-term Democratic congressman tell his opponent to return to the Bay Area, where the "Hillbilly Elegy" author spent time as a venture capitalist after graduating from Yale Law School.

Both candidates were born and raised in Ohio, but Ryan has sought to use Vance's stint in California to question his commitment to the state.

When answering a question about inflation, Vance sought to link Ryan to Pelosi — who has been the Democratic House leader for nearly 20 years and whom the congressman once challenged to lead the party's caucus in the lower chamber.

"That rising energy price that people see at the pump, that they see in their utility bills, that our farmers see when they're paying more for diesel — that was the direct result of policies enacted by Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi and supported 100% by Tim Ryan," Vance said at the beginning of the debate.

Ryan proceeded to blast Vance for bringing up Pelosi, who has represented San Francisco in the House since 1987.

"JD, you keep talking about Nancy Pelosi. If you want to run against Nancy Pelosi, move back to San Francisco and run against Nancy Pelosi," the Democratic lawmaker said.

Vance brought up Pelosi again during the debate, poking at an ad released by Ryan that also featured the congressman's wife as the couple spoke of not always agreeing on everything.

"It's actually a pretty funny TV commercial … where he says he only agrees with his own wife 70% of the time," the GOP candidate said. "Yet he votes and agrees with Nancy Pelosi 100% of the time. It must make things a little awkward in the Ryan household."

Ryan in the past two years has backed Democratic legislative priorities like the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act, but he has also been diverged from the party on various trade policies and said earlier this month that he didn't think President Joe Biden should run for reelection in 2024.

Despite the GOP lean of Ohio in recent statewide races, the Senate contest between Ryan and Vance remains competitive; the current FiveThirtyEight polling average has Vance at 45.3% and Ryan at 45.1%.
