In 1945, just two years before India got independence, Mohamed Premji founded Western India Vegetable Products Limited in Mumbai, which the world now knows as Wipro Limited, with very little idea of how much change the company was about to bring in the Indian software industry. Initially, the company mainly dealt with vegetable and refined oil

Incidentally, that was also the same year his son and now Chairman Azim Premji was born.

Wipro, which has now been renamed as Western Limited is a company of many firsts and aided by the able guidance of Azim Premji, the Czar of the Indian IT industry.

Infact, it was Azim Premji himself who had diversified the company into dealing with bakery fats, hair care soaps, baby toiletries and lighting products besides manufacturing hydrogenated oil after his father’s death.

Later in 1980, he also recognized the importance of the emerging IT field and took advantage of the vacuum left behind by the expulsion of IBM from India and made the decision of entering the high-technology sector by manufacturing minicomputers.

And, thus the Wipro of today, the third largest IT services company, was born.
