Following reports of Sunday's shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando - the deadliest mass shooting in American history - members of the LGBT community gathered at the historic Stonewall Inn in New York City to share their grief.

Hundreds were present at a 6 p.m. vigil on Sunday, carrying rainbow flags and signs protesting against hate.

The Stonewall Inn became a symbol of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender resistance when it was raided by police in 1969, leading to riots in the streets. Sunday's tragedy came as many cities were gearing up for LGBT pride celebrations, commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling on same-sex marriage.
