The government, as per the media reports, wants to clear two major military purchases from Russia. The procurement includes a comprehensive upgrade of India's Ilyushin transport aircraft fleet and the acquisition of 150 new armoured fighting vehicles as well.

Along with the above mentioned deals, Parrikar might also discuss the possible acquisition of two new Kilo class submarines for the Indian Navy that is battling with a depleted underwater fleet, reported The Economic Times.

India, as of now, has been operating nine Kilo submarines under the Sindhughosh class. We had also lost one Kilo submarine in 2013 during a major explosion at the Mumbai harbour.

A high-powered committee has been formed for acquisitions and it is all set to clear a Rs 4,250-crore project with Russia. The project basically is about the upgradation and enhancement of Indian Air Force's transport fleet of IL 78 and 76 aircraft, sources informed the business daily.

As per the experts, the deal will not only just enhance the service life of the aircraft by up to 20 years, but it will also give them upgraded avionics.

The upgrade involves setting-up of new engines to six of the IL 78 midair refuelers that will give the aircraft a longer range as well as the capability to carry extra fuel. The Indian fleet is likely to be fitted with new PS 90 engines that can increase the load carrying capability by almost two tonne.

During his Russia trip, Parrikar will visit Moscow and St Petersburg. Moreover, he is likely to set an agenda for PM Modi’s visit to Russia in December.
