A new Morning Consult/Politico poll released Wednesday shows that funding the border wall is the lowest priority for American voters in the upcoming government shutdown fight.

President Donald Trump has said that his proposed wall along the border of Mexico and the US is very important to his base, but the poll found most Americans don't think the wall is important enough to risk shutting down the government.

On a list of budget priorities including increasing defense spending, funding a deportation task force, and funding Planned Parenthood, voters Morning Consult/Politico polled in their survey ranked the border wall last.

Trump has in recent days shifted on provoking a government-shutdown fight over the border wall.

Trump and top White House officials were gearing up for a battle for border-wall funding in the new continuing resolution to keep the federal government funded and avoid a shutdown by the end of the week. But Trump said Monday that he was willing to budge on his demands to fund the wall in the spending bill, saying he would be open to shifting the timeline for funding of the border wall back to September.

Trump is right, however, that the wall is important to his base - 40% of Republicans included in the poll said the wall was important enough to shut down the government, while only 19% of Democrats said the same.
