Eight Salesforce employees were reportedly the last group to be returning from an offsite at the Hetch Hetchy campground in Del Valle Regional Park at 6:30 p.m. when the boat started taking on water. The employees jumped off the 14-foot aluminum boat and swam the 50 to 60 yards to shore.
Indugula did not make it, and crews have been searching Lake Del Valle in the East Bay since 7 p.m. Friday. The 31-year-old IT specialist had recently moved from India to San Francisco to work for the enterprise software company, according to the Bay Area News Service.
The Salesforce employees were not wearing life jackets on the boat when it started taking on water, according to Jones. Their offsite at Hetch Hetchy was also not reserved through the parks service, which had closed reservations to the campground after a water main broke, Jones said.
Several outlets reported that the employees were on the lake as part of a "team building" exercise, but Salesforce refused to confirm or deny whether it was an official company event.
Rescue crews are continuing to search the lake, but it is now classified as a recovery mission.
"Salesforce is aware that there is an investigation into a boating accident involving Raghavendra Indugula, who is a contractor in Salesforce's IT organization. Our thoughts are with Raghu's family and friends during this time. We are receiving updates from local authorities, but have no further information to share at this time," a company spokesperson said.
