Washington Post/ABC poll: Nearly 60% of registered US voters oppose Trump's decision to leave the Paris agreement
The survey conducted between June 2 and 4 found 57% of registered voters who were surveyed oppose the decision to leave, while 33% support it.
Trump announced on June 1 that he would withdraw the US from the deal.
The results differ greatly when political affiliations are factored in. According to the poll, 82% of participants who identified as Democrats were united in opposition, with only 8% supporting the exit. The poll found 67% of participants who said they were Republican supported Trump's decision, while 25% opposed it. Independents swung left, with 63% opposing Trump's exit and 22% supporting it.
Voters were also asked whether leaving the Paris accord would "help" or "hurt" US of leadership in the world. The poll found 56% of registered voters who participated thought it would hurt US leadership, while 22% thought it would help, according to the survey.
When asked whether it would help or hurt the US economy, 37% of registered voters said it would help the economy, and 42% said it would hurt. Republicans were more optimistic than Democrats on that question, with 77% of participants saying it would help the US economy and 12% saying it would hurt. Nearly 70% of surveyed Democrats thought it would hurt the US economy, while 10% thought it would help.
Trump announced last Thursday he would withdraw the US from the landmark Paris agreement, and would try to renegotiate the deal and reenter the agreement - something that European leaders have said was not a possibility.
US business, government, and academic leaders plan to continue to follow goals outlined in the Paris agreement in defiance of Trump's decision. Leaving the deal would make the US one of only three countries in the world not signed on to the Paris agreement - the two others being Syria and Nicaragua.
