J.D. Power released the latest edition of its Initial Quality Study. The study, which is in its 30th year, examines the number of problems a new car experiences over the first 90 days of ownership.
For the first time in 27 years, a non-premium brand finished atop the ranking with Kia leading the way. Porsche finished second in the study followed by Hyundai, Toyota, and BMW.
Chrysler and Jeep made the biggest improvement over 2015, but both brands still finished below industry average.
According to the study, overall quality across the industry is up 6% with 21 of the 33 brands featured in the study showing improved quality in 2016.
"Manufacturers are currently making some of the highest quality products we've ever seen," J.D. Power vice president of U.S. automotive quality Renee Stephens said in a statement. "Tracking our data over the past several years, it has become clear that automakers are listening to the customer, identifying pain points and are focused on continuous improvement. Even as they add more content, including advanced technologies that have had a reputation for causing problems, overall quality continues to improve."
J.D. Power also broke down the study in terms of each segment of the market. Here are the 25 cars that finished atop their category from the 2016 model year.
