President Donald Trump fired off a pair of tweets Saturday pointing to the US economy's strength amid the ongoing Russia firestorm.
"Stock Market at new all-time high!" said the first tweet. "Working on new trade deals that will be great for U.S. and its workers!"
In a second tweet posted shortly after, Trump said, "Stock Market hit another all-time high yesterday - despite the Russian hoax story! Also, jobs numbers are starting to look very good!"
The Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all closed higher on Friday.
Trump's mention of "the Russian hoax story" comes as revelations about Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, during the 2016 campaign raise new questions about whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to tilt the election in Trump's favor.
In addition to Trump Jr. and Veselnitskaya, the meeting was also attended by Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, former campaign manager Paul Manafort, British music publicist Rob Goldstone, former Soviet military intelligence officer and current lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin, Russian translator Anatoli Samachornov, and an unnamed representative of the Agalarov family, who first asked for the meeting.
Trump Jr. initially said it had been a "short introductory" meeting, during which he and Veselnitskaya had primarily discussed a Russian adoption program that had been cut off in retaliation for the 2012 Magnitsky Act, which Veselnitskaya has strongly lobbied against.
The next day, however, it emerged that Trump Jr. had accepted the meeting to obtain damaging information about then-candidate Hillary Clinton, and that he had been told in advance it was "part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump."
Trump Jr. did not divulge those details until the New York Times reported on them, and he also did not disclose the names of the other people who attended the meeting until it was covered by the media.
Trump Jr.'s attorney, Alan Futerfas, said Friday that Trump Jr. had not disclosed all the facts of the meeting because it "concerns events that occurred 13 months ago that were considered insignificant at the time and essentially forgotten."
