Nearly 120 passengers and crew members on a Chennai-bound IndiGo Airlines flight (6E512 ) from Bhubaneswar had a narrow escape on Wednesday (June 25) after the windscreen of its cockpit suffered severe damage mid-air . Ice crystals in the atmosphere and mid-air turbulence reportedly caused the damage.
The flight made a safe landing at the airport in Visakhapatnam and all the passengers and crew members on board are safe. About 70 Chennai-bound passengers were stranded there for over three hours.
Passengers on board theIndiGo flight said that it took off from Bhubaneswar at 1.50 pm, but experienced turbulence mid-air. The crew informed the passengers that two layers of the windshield developed cracks and the pilots had no option but to land, said SDJM Prasad, who was travelling from Bhubaneswar to Chennai. The stranded passengers also complained that no arrangements had been made for more than three hours, he added.
A ground staff member of the airliner admitted that the flight’s windscreen suffered severe damage, but maintained that the landing was not an emergency landing as stated by the passengers. “All passengers were safely transported to Chennai,” the staff member added.
