The first trailer for director Terrence Malick's new film, "Voyage of Time," was released on Thursday - giving a cryptic and stunning look into a film that has been 40 years in the making for the reclusive Malick.

According to a press release, "Voyage of Time" will be a sprawling documentary that takes audiences "into the heart of monumental events never witnessed - from the birth of the stars and galaxies to the explosion of diverse life-forms on planet earth, including humankind - in immersive new ways that only IMAX can deliver."

In the brief trailer, Malick captures the birth of the world and universe in a series of striking visuals - as scenes of cosmic explosions transition into scenes of developing aquatic life into a shot of a brilliant cityscape.

The film reportedly has its origins in an aborted project called "Q" that Malick attempted to develop in the 1970s.

Entertainment Weekly reports that two versions of the film will be released. Brad Pitt will narrate the 40-minute IMAX feature, and Cate Blanchett will reportedly narrate an extended 90-minute version of the film.

Blanchett appeared in Malick's critically panned film "Knight of Cups" earlier this year.

"Voyage of Time" is set to premiere on IMAX screens on October 7.
