Teenagers in the UAE can now get more excited about the delivery of their driving licenses in the future than the licenses themselves. The United Arab Emirates is planning to use drones to deliver government documents to residents and monitor road traffic.

According to Gulf News, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai is joining the drone delivery trend.

A couple of months ago, the directorate employed the use of a drone to deliver urgent in-house documents between its Bur Dubai and Deira branches within two minutes. These drones will use Google Maps for directions, and fingerprint scanners to confirm identities of recipients.

The initiative is considered the first of its kind and officials say it will help the government respond faster to residents' needs. UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said in a statement, "We want to reach people before they reach us."

Tests have been conducted over the past three months with regards to feasibility and cost effectiveness. The final phase of testing will begin soon in Dubai, where the initiative is planned to be rolled out first.
