  • Lenovo is reportedly planning to release a new Motorola Razr phone with a foldable display in February 2019.
  • The new Motorola Razr will cost around $1,500.

Motorola's fabled Razr flip-phone that was first released in 2004 is getting a 2019 makeover with a foldable display, according to the The Wall Street Journal.

The 2019 model is the result of an exclusive partnership between Lenovo - Motorola's parent company - and Verizon. Only 200,000 units of the new Razr will be made, and the Journal reports it'll cost around $1,500 when it arrives in February - more than double the $600 price tag of the original, which was already considered pricey at the time.

The interior of the new Razr phone is likely to be a display that bends at the middle, with a hinge to allow it to fully close. The Journal said it won't crease.

Details are scant as the phone has yet to be officially announced, but it's likely that the display technology used in the 2019 Razr will be some kind of OLED display, as OLEDs are the only displays that can bend and flex without breaking.

Foldable displays in smartphones are a new category that'll be making their way to the market in 2019. Samsung is said to be unveiling its foldable smartphone during its February 20 event, where it'll also be unveiling its new Galaxy S10 flagship smartphone.

Royole's FlexPai foldable smartphoneRoyole

Chinese phone maker Royole announced its FlexPai foldable smartphone toward the end of 2018, but it's still in the pre-order phase today.

Popular phones of yore, especially flip phones, have tried making comebacks during the age of the smartphone in the past by running the Android operating system, but it can't be said they've enjoyed much success. They're mostly novelty items or designed for a niche group of users. We'll have to wait and see what Lenovo and Motorola reveal later this year about the foldable Razr phone before passing any judgement.
