In order to curb soaring potato prices, the government has decided to import potatoes.

"We are taking all possible measures to control price rise in potato," Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said. He added that the ministry will soon release tenders so that shipments can arrive by next month.

In recent months, potato prices have been soaring throughout north India. Retail prices in Delhi currently range from Rs 35 to 40 per kg.
In June, the government had imposed a minimum export price of $450 per tonne to boost availability in the country.

This move aims at overcoming shortages till fresh harvest arrives in January next year.
