  • As states enter phased reopenings amid the COVID-19 pandemic, popular vacation home rental site Vrbo reports an uptick in interest in private rentals for July 4.
  • Vrbo released a list of the top 10 destinations that are receiving the most searches from users for the holiday weekend this year, which has surged compared to this time last year.
  • Vrbo users are mostly searching homes on the East Coast located near the beach or close to state parks in areas like the Florida Panhandle, Cape Cod, the Outer Banks, the Hamptons, and others.

As states actively transition into phased reopenings following COVID-19 lockdowns, many US travelers are likely considering domestic travel options.

This cautious recalibration coincides with summer, which is a peak time for Americans to travel. The July 4 holiday, in particular, is traditionally a popular time to do so as many enjoy time off from work and school.

Although staying at home and isolating is still by far the most prudent approach when it comes to safety, many are considering options to head out into the world, and experts we spoke to say that private home rentals are safer compared to hotel stays.

Hotels can involve high-volume situations and high-touch surfaces, whereas a private rental allows for families to more closely control their hygiene and personal space. Of course, any travel does incur some risk, and without a vaccine, there is no guarantee for safety. We recommend following WHO and CDC guidelines before making plans and wearing masks, using hand sanitizer, and maintaining social distancing.

With interest in private rentals seemingly on the rise, popular home rental site Vrbo is reporting that demand from users is significantly up in comparison to this same time period last year.

Many Americans are seeking a safe summer vacation rental during the upcoming July 4 weekend in 10 popular locations, based on Vrbo users' site searches and saved properties. While they haven't released specific numbers, the site says searches for July 4 accommodations are much higher this year, especially in places like the Hamptons in New York, which is seeing nearly two times more interest than this time last year.

The trend follows another recent surge by Vrbo users that expressed a keen interest in woodsy cabins, which served as nearly a third of the vacation homes being saved to users' trip boards.

According to Vrbo, the most in-demand destinations for July 4 are:
  1. Florida Panhandle, FL
  2. Gulf Shores, AL
  3. The Hamptons, NY
  4. Hilton Head, SC
  5. San Diego, CA
  6. Myrtle Beach, SC
  7. Outer Banks, NC
  8. Gatlinburg, TN
  9. Cape Cod, MA
  10. Charleston, SC

If you're equally intrigued by the possibility of a July 4 getaway to the places in this list, we combed Vrbo to select attractive homes with excellent amenities that are still available to book for the holiday weekend, as of publishing. But act quickly; previous homes we considered booked up in front of our eyes.

Most are top-rated, though some newer properties are yet to be reviewed, but seem quite promising for such a high-demand weekend.

We also identified COVID-19 cleaning policies for each property, if noted in the property's description. According to Vrbo's Trust & Safety guidelines, they have partnered with medical experts — as well as travel industry experts — to create specific cleanliness protocols for all hosts. Guests are also encouraged to reach out to individual hosts to inquire about each property's cleaning procedures.

While the prices below represent a good value, bear in mind that this is an exceptionally in-demand holiday weekend, and prices are much higher than they would otherwise be, and inventory is low and subject to change quickly. If your travel dates are flexible, you might secure a better deal by selecting an alternate weekend.

Here are Vrbo private home rentals available to book for July 4 weekend in the most popular holiday destinations.
