RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk has been placed on lockdown, with one person placed under custody, Sky News reported.

Sources told the news channel that "a car tried to force its way into" the grounds of the base, which has a Royal Air Force name but is used by the US military.

Suffolk Police said it was responding to a "significant incident" at the compound, but added no further detail.

An individual tried to force his way through a checkpoint with his car, the BBC quoted the Ministry of Defence as saying.

Alastair Bunkall, Sky's Defence Correspondent, said: "It was described to me as some sort of arguments at the base gates. The situation is ongoing."
