Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky rejected one of President Donald Trump's repeated accusations toward media outlets at the Louisville Chamber of Commerce on Monday.

"What I do every morning is, there a couple of services that I look at before I leave home every morning," McConnell said. "It gives me a synopsis of the articles in virtually everything."

"And so, my view is that most news is not fake."

McConnell's remark follows a series of tweets in which Trump railed against what he called "the very dishonest Fake News Media." Trump typically uses the "fake news" label - with no evidence to back his claims - to describe stories he disapproves of.

Trump is also a frequent critic of McConnell, whom he had blamed, along with several other Republicans, for the party's failed bid to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"Can you believe that Mitch McConnell, who has screamed Repeal & Replace for 7 years, couldn't get it done," Trump tweeted earlier this month. "Must Repeal & Replace ObamaCare!"

The president has said he wouldn't rule out asking McConnell to step down, if necessary.
