Motor vehicle amendment Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha and here's how it will affect you

The Motor Vehicle Amendment Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha today.


The bill was tabled by Nitin Gadkari, the Minister for Road Transport & Highways in the Lok Sabha. The Bill intends to change the way Indians drive on the roads.


Firstly, the bill will make way for much higher penalties for offenders. Those caught driving while drunk will now have to cough up a lot more as fines.

The bill also reduces the validity of the driver license from 20 years to 10 years.


Meanwhile, the Bill recognised cab aggregators like Uber and Ola; and they will have to get state licenses as well to operate.


The Bill will also constitute a Motor Vehicle Accident Fund, which would provide compulsory insurance cover to all vehicle users in India. The fine for not carrying a valid insurance is raised to ₹2,000.
