The school was placed on lockdown and a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team was currently looking for the suspect, a Lubbock police officer told Reuters.

University spokesman Chris Cook said that police were making a student welfare check when they found evidence of drugs inside the suspect's room.

Officers brought the suspect to the police station when he took out a gun and shot the officer in the head. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

The university twitter account advised people at the campus to "take shelter in a safe location."
